Gay Men’s Book Club is reading The Disintegrations

shirtless guy, man with glasses, reading, bookNext month Boston’s Gay Men’s Book Club meets on Monday, October 29th in the Back Bay at Trident Bookseller’s & Cafe on Newbury Street. If you’re looking for something to read and interested in meeting gay men in a more social setting that doesn’t involve a gym, bar or an app this may be worth checking out.

This month the group is reading The Disintegrations by Alistair McCartney. The book was the winner of the Publishing Triangle’s 2018 Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBTQ fiction and named one of the best works of fiction for 2017 by The Seattle Times and Entropy Magazine.  This enigmatic novel confronts both the impossibility of understanding death and the timeless longing for immortality.

Halloween, Boston, Provincetown, Providence, OgunquitTis the season to scare the crap out of oneself. While I’m no expert on this sort of thing, I’ve done some digging to share with you information about haunted houses in the area that you can visit. I’ve not attended any of these locations so share your comments to help others pick and choose the best haunted house.

Below the listing of haunted houses you’ll also find a number of ‘activities’ for visiting Salem, MA this month and below that there is more information about Halloween themed attractions in New England.

scary, salemFew cities or towns in the world embrace the Halloween holiday like Salem, MA. For those who have never visited this town in October, I would highly recommend it. When I was in my 20s a friend of mine had an apartment overlooking the Salem Common and I’d go to his annual Halloween party. They remain some of my favorite memories.Visiting Salem? Check out the following:

Population growth in Boston results in a call for more housing by Mayor Walsh

Earlier this week the Boston Business Journal reported that Mayor Marty Walsh is looking to increase Boston’s housing goal from building 53,000 units to 69,000 new units (a 30% increase) by the year 2030.

Back in 2014 the city of Boston’s population was just under 660,000 and was expected to grow to just over 700,000 by 2030. But with Boston’s population growth has forced the city to revisit their initial forecast and revise their population estimate to approximately 760,000 residents by 2030.

The neighborhoods that the Mayor would like to focus on building new housing includes Sullivan Square, Newmarket and Widett Circle, the Fort Point Channel, Suffolk Downs, Readville and Beacon Yards. The mayor is also boosting the number of affordable-housing units goal to 15,820, which (if met) would mean Boston would have approximately 70,000 new income-restricted units.

South End named one of the 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world

BostonThe British travel group, Time Out, has included Boston’s South End in their annual listing of the 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world.

Clocking in at #48 in the world (according to Time Out), the South End joins Highland Park – Los Angeles, the West Village – NYC, West Loop – Chicago, Hayes Valley – San Francisco and Central District – Seattle as the other American city neighborhoods to receive the distinction.

Described in the write up as a once neglected neighborhood that locals would do their best to avoid now the South End “has become the city’s artistic hub, with dozens of galleries and design shops that wouldn’t be out of place in any of the world’s culture capitals.

You can decide for yourself where you think Boston’s South End should fit into any list of “coolest neighborhoods” but I’m inclined to agree with the distinction that Time Out recognizes and hope the South End (and the city) continue to work to make this a home for more artists in the future. You can read the full article and see what other neighborhoods were included in Time Out’s 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world.
