I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Lyric Stage Co. presents Stephen Sondheim’s, Road Show

boston theater, bosartsLater this week The Lyric Stage Co. returns with their first production of 2018, Road Show. The show is inspired by a New Yorker article Stephen Sondheim read about the Mizner brothers, Addison and Wilson, who were born in California in the late 1800s. The show opens at the deathbed of their father who encourages the brothers to go out and mold the new nation. The musical spans the globe as the brothers seek out the amorphous and elusive American Dream through the booms and busts of the early 20th century.

Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018 I want to feature the many groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you would like to have your club / team featured please reach out to me.

Meet Jess Phoenix from California’s 25th Congressional district

California's 25th Congressional DistrictI don’t know much about Jess Phoenix other than she is a geologist who is running for U.S. House of Representatives 25th District in California and hopes to replace U.S. Representative Steve Knight who has a 0% Lifetime score by The League of Conservation Voters on issues pertaining to the environment.

The 25th Congressional district is located just north of Los Angeles and it hasn’t sent a Democrat to D.C. in 25 years but Jess Phoenix seems undeterred by that fact.  I realize that this post is not what I typically write about but I hope in the months that follow I hear about more candidates (and specifically female candidates) like Jess coming forward to announce their candidacy.

If you live in this district or near it, talk to your friends about Jess. I’m a firm believer in grassroots organizing and if more people were to get involved, we might be more proud and less ashamed of our government.

Menopausal Mermaid opens Thursday at Club Cafe

gay boston, boston drag theaterLooking for something different? Later this week a new show opens at Club Cafe’s Moonshine Room called, The Menopausal Mermaid: A drag parody reimagined! The show is described as a kaleidoscope of fantastic drag, sexy sailors and outrageous costumes.

The show opens with a slightly wiser (and peeved) version of Ariel than the Disney production presents. Feeling betrayed by Eric and cursed by Ursula, Ariel is ready to kick ass in this 90-minute musical parody that picks up where the Disney fairy tale left off.  Tired of playing by the rules, Ariel reinvents herself, and along the way she takes on love, fame and Walt Disney.

BosGuy cooks: Roasted brussels sprout salad

cookingI really like Brussels sprouts when they’ve been roasted to the point of being crispy on the outside, but lately I’ve been shredding the roasted veggie and turning it into a salad. It never fails to please and I like how versatile the salad is.

Lately, I have been adding shredded Parmesan cheese and prosciutto to this salad, but the recipe below includes pomegranate, almond slivers and goat cheese. These items are all optional – you could use cranberries in lieu of pomegranate for example. The entire process takes about 1 hour because you have to let the vegetables cool after roasting them.

cooking

lay the brussels sprouts face down and drizzle a little extra olive oil

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12 medium to large sized brussels sprouts
  • Olive oil & balsamic vinegar
  • Salt & thyme
  • Goat cheese (optional)
  • Pomegranate (optional)
  • Almond slivers (optional)

After roasting, put them in the refrigerator to cool before shredding

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

– Preheat the oven to 400 degrees
– Prep and clean the vegetables by cutting the stem, removing any old or bad outer leaves, cutting the sprout in half and place in bowl with cold water.
– Drain the water and add enough olive oil to coat the sprouts along with 2-3 healthy pinches of salt and thyme; mix with your hands until the sprouts are thoroughly coated.
– Place on a baking sheet faced down and drizzle a little extra oil and leave in the oven for 20 minutes
– Remove the baking sheet out and flip the sprouts over (they should be cooked on both sides) drizzle a little balsamic over each vegetable, turn off the oven and place back in the oven for 5-10 minutes to let the balsamic marinade in the heat.
– Let the vegetables cool. I put them in a bowl and into the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes then once cooled, take them out and shred them with a knife and add to the salad bowl.
– Add your optional items (I like adding something with color to make the plate pop) and then toss together. Taste the salad to see if it needs more salt.

Serving tip: Just prior to serving I drizzle more olive oil and balsamic over the top of the salad.
