America’s secular credo and Lady Liberty

We would all do well to remember America’s secular credo that was inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, because a 21st century strain of xenophobia has reared its ugly head in American politics. While it is easy to blame President Trump, remember that his policies are supported by millions of Americans so on the eve of 4th of July celebrations let’s make a commitment to strike up a conversation with someone who either supports the President’s unAmerican ban on refugees and immigrants or to reengage someone who didn’t vote in the last election.

No matter how passionate the case is made, opposing someone doesn’t turn an undecided or disenfranchised voter into a supporter. It is time to stop all the political rants. While they may feel cathartic only people who already agree with you are listening and more than likely you are turning off disenfranchised voters. We need to start engaging in meaningful and respectful dialog with others we may disagree with or who have turned a deaf ear to politics.

Boston neighborhoods: Foreign-born population

Boston foreign born residentsEarlier this week Adam who publishes the excellent blog, UniversalHub, shared this map from the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library.  I found this particularly interesting, because although I was only born a few miles from Boston in the tiny town of Winchester, MA, Sergio was born about 4,500 miles to the south in Brazil. You can get a better look at the map and zoom in to see some of the smaller printed nationalities if you click here.

If you like this sort of thing you should stop by the BPL to check out their exhibit Who We Are: Boston Immigration Now and Then.

On a related note, Pew Research’s map shows how different nationalities came to the United States, starting in 1850 up through 2013.

In the summer

Poem, LoveI’ve posted this poem previously but thought it worth sharing again. In the Summer was written by a Syrian named Nizar Qabbani.  I love this poem. It has a slightly melancholic message that makes it all the more romantic, which is pretty impressive considering the entire poem is less than 40 words.

Julian Edelman and ESPN’s Body Issue

ESPN’s “Body Issue” raises a lot of eyebrows each year, but the photo of New England Patriot, Julian Edelman, (shown below), which has been making the rounds on the Internet has half of Boston drooling.

The likable wide receiver (no double entendre intended) that is actually a legit position in football, quads are so crazy strong I can’t stop looking at them. This is a man who has obviously never owned a pair of skinny jeans.

New study ranks best LGBT cities in the world

San Francisco

San Francisco ranked 10th in Nestpick’s 100 best gay cities in the world

On the 48th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Nestpick, a Berlin-based online housing platform, has issued a list of the 100 best LGBT cities in the world. For a city to rank strongly they focused on the following criteria: LGBT dating scene, nightlife, open minded citizens, and low levels of hate crime.  They also looked at national laws that impact lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, such as the right to get married or adopt children.

Based on Nestpick’s findings the top five cities are: Madrid, Amsterdam, Toronto, Tel Aviv and London. New York City (9th) and San Francisco (10th) are the highest rated US cities. Below is the full list of US cities that made the cut.

US City Rankings
9. New York City
10. San Francisco
24. Austin
27. Miami
36. Portland (OR)
40. Los Angeles
45. Chicago
52. Boston
55. Seattle
58. Las Vegas

poem, poetry, casual encountersAmerican cities that didn’t make this list, that surprised me are:  Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. but that is largely based on nightlife and maybe the other metrics used made them drop off the list.

It’s no coincidence that the world’s most exciting cities have a strong LGBT community, contributing much to the dynamism, openness and prosperity which defines locations such as Madrid, Amsterdam and Berlin”, Ömer Kücükdere, Managing Director of Nestpick.

Gay Men’s Book Club: Gary In Your Pocket

Next month Boston’s Gay Men’s Book Club meets on Monday, July 24th in the Back Bay at Trident Bookseller’s & Cafe on Newbury Street. If you are looking for something to read and interested in meeting gay men in a more social setting that doesn’t involve a gym or a bar, this may be just the group for you.

This month the group is reading Gary In Your Pocket. The book is about Gary Fisher and was edited by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick after Gary passed away from AIDS at the age of 32 in 1994. Gary Fisher was a gay African American man who enjoyed writing and drawing and was a dedicated diarist. He was born on June 19, 1961 in Bristol, PA, and he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1979-1983 where he studied English and creative writing.
