The Republican Party is too media savvy to openly admit that they are using LGBT rights as a wedge issue but just because Republicans aren’t saying “we hate the LGBT community”, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. My parents always told me that actions speak louder than words. And one needn’t have the deductive reasoning skills of Sherlock Holmes to realize that the Republican Party sees targeting the LGBT community as a way to rally their fracturing party.
My parents always told me that actions speak louder than words.
Two weeks ago I wrote, Why the LGBT community still needs pride, after watching several southern states pass discriminatory legislation specifically targeting the LGBT community (many under the guise of “religious freedom”). At the time I wrote, “It seems like the South has declared war on the LGBT community.” Now I realize I was naive to blame this solely on the South. While the exact number of anti-LGBT legislation introduced in states in 2016 is up for debate, the trend cannot be disputed and it is happening all over the country.
This is troubling for me to watch, and I would imagine horrifyingly frightening for a young man or woman struggling to come to terms with their sexuality or gender. The Wisconsin Gazette recently published a state-by-state overview of anti-LGBT bills. You can check out what is happening in your state, here.
Anti-LGBT legislation seems to almost always be initiated by Republican state legislators. The chances of those bills becoming laws are increasingly likely if there are Republican majorities in the state house and a Republican governor. Since Massachusetts started recognizing same sex marriages in 2004 the Republican party has used marriage rights as a wedge issue – initially with a great deal of success but in recent elections to a lesser extent.
The 2015 US Supreme Court ruling recognizing our marriage rights coupled with the death of Justice Scalia has rallied conservatives who are using “Religious Freedom” as an excuse to legalize discrimination and to play on unfounded fears that the transgendered community is a bunch of predatory sickos who want to take over public restrooms – when the reality is more Republican politicians have been arrested for sex acts in public restrooms than trans people.

Sergio and I booked our first trip to Portugal at the end of summer. This visit to Portugal may be bittersweet for Sergio who’s father passed away about 16 months ago and who’s family emigrated from there to Brazil. Ever since I first met Sergio I’ve wanted to visit Portugal and I’m looking forward to spending a few days exploring Lisbon. We have the opportunity to spend 2-3 nights outside of Lisbon, but I’m torn on whether we should head north to Porto or south to some of the fantastic looking beaches.
Have you visited Portugal? Share your thoughts or tips in the comments section of my blog or by emailing me directly at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Today, Boston is home to the largest proportion of Millennials of any major US city. People age 20 to 34 make up more than a third of Boston’s population, with even higher percentages in Cambridge (44.5%) and Somerville (44%).
Juxtapose that fact with news that realtor.com has now named Boston as the city most empty nestors want to flock to in 2016. This older demographic of retirees 65- 74 are attributed with fueling the demand for the many luxury condominiums going up all over downtown Boston.
According to realtor.com, this demographic no longer want the responsibilities associated with home ownership and many are selling the homes they raised their families and moving into urban centers where they can walk to meet friends for a coffee, go shopping or see a show.
In September 2013 seventy-five pianos were installed in public locations across Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville for anyone to play. The “Street Pianos Boston: Play Me I’m Yours” public piano installation was to commemorate the 75th season of the Celebrity Series of Boston.
Earlier this week The Celebrity Series of Boston reported that the popular art installment Play, Me, I’m Yours will return to Boston this fall (September 23-October 10, 2016). This time, sixty pianos will be decorated by local artists and spread across every neighborhood in Boston and select Cambridge locations.
However, before the pianos hit the streets of Boston, each piano will become a piece of visual art, created by a local artist. Celebrity Series is asking visual artists of all backgrounds, artistic abilities and mediums to apply to decorate one of the sixty pianos that will be available to the public this fall. Artist applications will be accepted through May 25 at streetpianosboston.org.
