Massachusetts is watching $1 billion in tax revenue go up in smoke

smoking weed, pot, 420Earlier this week it was reported that marijuana sales in Colorado topped $1 billion in 2015. That is an increase in revenue of nearly 45% from about $700 million in the previous year.

So my question to residents in Massachusetts is twofold: first do you believe the reputation of Colorado has been somehow tainted and is now a less desirable place to live or visit because of the legalization of marijuana?  Second, do you think our state can afford NOT to sell marijuana?

Q: If MA sold $1b in marijuana, how much tax revenue would it generate?
A: $62,500,000 (based on MA 6.25% sales tax)

Presumably the sale of marijuana in Massachusetts would be subject to more than our 6.25% sales tax much like cigarettes have additional taxes. Think about how much money we’d generate from the sale of marijuana and square that with the fact that we can’t find the money we need to invest in our infrastructure, improve our schools or make our state universities more affordable.

ABOUT NOT DARK YET: “Fascinating, surreal, gorgeously written, and like nothing you’ve ever read before, Not Dark Yet is the book we all need to read right now. It is art about science, climate change, and activism, and it vitally explores how we as people deal with a world that is transforming in terrifying ways.”  BuzzFeed

If you’d like to read the book I’d like to encourage you to consider purchasing it from one of Boston’s independent booksellers.

Restaurant review: O’Hara’s Pub WTC

O'Hara's Pub NYC Guinness

Source: 3.bp.blogspot.com

My trip to New York City last month brought me to the Financial District; an area of the city I’m not familiar with so after doing a quick search online I found a pub called O’Hara’s that had scores of rave reviews and was near by.

Upon entering O’Hara’s you’ll note the hundreds (if not thousands) of patches from police departments. It gives the place a certain charm and paid tribute to those men and women who spend their careers serving and protecting others. I liked O’Hara’s the minute I walked in the door. The bartender, Paul, had an easy going personality and maintained conversations with everyone at the bar without ever seeming to rush anyone or leave any patrons waiting.

O'Hara's Pub NYC iiThe food is mostly of the comfort variety. I was tempted to try the Shepherd’s Pie which Paul said was delicious but huge, so I opted for one of their many burgers on the menu. I ended up ordering the Bronx Burger which comes with mushrooms, sauteed onions and American cheese as well as a generous pile of French fries all for $12.50 (pretty damn cheap by NYC standards).

The food, beer and service all lived up to the hype in those reviews, I’m happy to say. If you are looking for a classic pub and the corresponding grub this is a place to check out. O’Hara’s Pub is located at 120 Cedar Street and serves food much later than most of the surrounding bars and restaurants. If you do stop by tell Paul the guy from Boston says “Hello”.

Rumor has it Abbey Group is the buyer of Boston Flower Market

Boston Flower MarketTheRealReporter.com says the Abbey Group is the money behind the rumored $40 million purchase for the 5.5 acre Boston Flower Exchange. According to the article, tenants have been told they need to vacate 540 Albany St. by year’s end. The lack of transparency and secrecy that has surrounded the Flower Exchange purchase to date is not going to sit well with neighborhood associations, but I remain curious to find out what is planned and hope more details from the developer will be forthcoming.

The Abby Group’s most successful endeavors include the Landmark Center in the Fenway and the Lafayette Corporate Center and 45 Province high-rise residential condominium in Downtown Crossing. Much thanks to Courtney Trautman for bringing the article in TheRealReporter.com to my attention.

While this is not Boston’s first snowfall, it feels like it. Boston looks very pretty at the moment. Looking out my windows, the flurries pop against the red brick, giving the illusion that I’m looking out at a giant snow globe.

For the past few days Boston has been in the 50s.  At lunch time yesterday, Boston was 55 degrees and today it is 30 degrees.  Boston has about 3-4 inches of snow right now, but I suspect most of this will be gone by Monday since weather forecasts indicate Boston’s will be sunny and in the mid 40s on Sunday.

Looking for Love on Tinder

chadwick moore love in the time of tinderChadwick Moore’s article Love in the time of Tinder: What I Learned From a Month of Dates in Out Magazine’s “Love Issue” caught my eye.  With Valentine’s Day two weeks away I thought the article might be a downer for those hopeless romantics looking for love in the age of phone apps, but it made me laugh reading through his 21 Tinder dates in New York City.

Maybe the German word schniedrefreude applies here but for those who may be looking for love Moore’s article is certain to make you feel better, knowing all those awkward / painful dates are more the norm and less to do with you.

Gaily Grind: Rugby players bubble butts

sports, assMost of you read my blog while you’re at work so I make an effort to keep my blog pg rated (well pg-13 rated) so employers won’t block my site; this isn’t an easy task since anything “gay” seems to be equated to sex, which often is categorized as porn and blocked.  While my post is perfectly respectable note that the Gaily Grind article, that I link to is not safe for work unless you happen to work in a proctologist’s office.

Robert Mapplethorpe was a controversial photographer who’s homoerotic work created a national debate over public funding of art in the 1980s. Unfortunately, Mapplethorpe passed away in Boston in 1989 at the age of 42 due to complications from HIV/AIDS, but his work lives on.

In just a few weeks the LACMA and the Getty Museums will present complementary, simultaneous exhibitions of more than 3oo pieces of work entitled, The Perfect Medium.
