Are you Peggy or Viola

Valentines DayI post this every year and never tire of it.  I like to inquire – are you Peggy or Viola? I suppose to put this in Golden Girls lingo, “Are you Blanche or are you Rose?”

Cats with Thumbs

Cravendale is a brand of milk sold in the UK and this was a popular video they released a few years ago that I stumbled upon.  It is pretty funny and I thought it might help you start your day with a smile.

Wine review: Marques de Murrieta Reserva 2008

marques de murrieta reserva 2008

Rioja: Marques de Murrieta Reserva 2008

Last month a friend and I tried the Spanish Rioja, Marques de Murrieta 2008.  I had asked our waiter for a red wine that would pair nicely with our steak dinner and this Tempranillo blend was suggested.  I don’t know much about Spanish wines but I do enjoy Tempranillo, which tend to be full-bodied red wines.

At our waiter’s suggestion we had the bottle decanted and it certainly helped the wine open nicely.   Because we were in a dim lit restaurant it is hard to say what the color of the wine is but it appeared to be quite a deep red and while it lived up to the hype with a bold taste it finished a bit quickly to my liking.  Since trying the wine I’ve read a handful of reviews (some of which are not that flattering) and I have to wonder if it is coloring my impressions.  I did enjoy the bottle and thought it priced fairly; retail pricing appears to range between $15 – $25 a bottle.  If you like Spanish Riojas I would certainly suggest trying the wine and think this bottle would make for a great option if you are going to a wine tasting with friends.

Match your music to your exercise

Does music help keep you motivated and focused when working out?  I’m sure it comes as no surprise that good music can help you get a better workout.  Fix.com recently published a rather interesting infographic that explains how music affects our workouts by deconstructing the way music changes the way we exercise.

According to the blog post on Fix.com, focus on beats per minute as a decisive factor when deciding the type of music that works best for your workout. The different heart rates that various types of exercise induce should match with the beats per minute of your music. You can see the full infographic and article here.

Boston’s best sandwiches

BosGuy cooks

BosGuy’s Wicked Awesome Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The current issue of Boston Magazine has a fantastic article about the best sandwiches served in town.  As you can imagine there are a number of delicious options and the South End gets a bunch of shout outs, including Myers + Chang’s Bacon and Egg sandwich – which is only available on weekends,  Flour Bakery + Cafe’s BLT, Mike’s City Diner’s, “Mike’s Famous Pilgrim” sandwich just to name a few.  Also South End cheap eats, Blunch which is only open for breakfast and lunch is spotlighted as a must try place.

Despite all the sandwich joints in this town I still have to say my favorite is probably Downtown Crossing’s Sam LaGrassa’s. Do you have a favorite sandwich that you like to make or a particular place you go to grab a sandwich?  I love making grilled cheese sandwiches in the winter.  I actually wrote about it last January in my post Best Grilled Cheese Evah.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

fitnessNew Year’s Resolution Reset

How far have you come with your New Years resolutions? A majority of people have fizzled out on their fitness goals by now, so I’ve created a list of healthy results from a month of intense exercise for the 2 most popular fitness goals.

Weight loss: 4-8 pounds of weight loss is an amazing pace to lose fat. The 8-10 lb mark is where you will notice your pants are fitting a little better, and people that are close to you are starting to take notice. This pace is ideal in that it is less likely that you’ll lose any muscle with the fat that you are taking off. The quicker you lose it, the quicker it will be put back on. If you aren’t there yet, and you want to be – START NOW!

Muscle gain: Muscle gain norms are dependent on age and exercise history but 1-2 lbs in a month is attainable. Keep in mind, that in order gain muscle you will have to be at a calorie SURPLUS so the buildup of fat is almost inevitable but hopefully limited. If you haven’t gained any muscle this month, and you wanted to – WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Check out some of my previous blog posts for ideas on how to liven up your fitness routine and to stay motivated in 2015.  Kyle’s Health & Fitness posts.
