Later today Sergio and I leave the frozen tundra Boston to visit a friend who lives on Grand Cayman Island. We’ve never been to this tiny Caribbean island and we are excited not only to see Steve but to also visit someplace new.
Blogging may slow down a bit while we are away so apologies in advance for anyone who may be waiting on a comment to be approved or if I don’t follow up as quickly as I normally do through the other channels that I push my content.
I promise to take many pictures and will have plenty to share upon my return.
Stay Warm

Yesterday Boston set a record for the most total snowfall in a 7-day period. While it was mesmerizing to watch, snowfall isn’t really meant for city life. It makes getting around a hassle and it loses its beauty quickly. However, it did make me think about one of my favorite poems by one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost.
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The conservative “Iowa Freedom Summit” was hosted this past January. This group of crazies can be best described as the xenophobic, homophobic, reactionary, creationist wing of the Republican Party. After the summit on Sunday, Feb. 1st, Governor Huckabee’s spoke to the media. Among many of his comments that day homosexuality and marriage equality inevitably arose. Speaking to the media Huckabee inferred he had gay friends and they agreed to disagree on certain issues but remain friends. Following his assertions he then offered this helpful bit to clarify.
“I don’t chuck people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view. I don’t drink alcohol, but, gosh, a lot of my friends, maybe most of them, do. You know, I don’t use profanity, but, believe me, I have got a lot of friends who do.” – Gov. Mike Huckabee, February 1, 2015
This man equates one’s sexual orientation to that of a choice between would I like a glass of wine with my meal. What a dick. No actually, what a dumb ass dick.
I first saw this advertisement during the SuperBowl and couldn’t believe how touched I was. Do you still believe that sexism isn’t an issue and misogynistic attitudes are no longer pervasive in the US? Think again.
How might you have responded to the questions asked in this commercial?
Creating your own exercise programFollowing last week’s post on creating an exercise program, I wanted to breakdown “The rules” for your Basic hypertrophy (building muscle) program, and then tie in how to make sure you can continue to see results which I’ll share in a later post.
Workout Structure: Hypertrophy (gaining muscle mass)
Choose an exercise of your own preference that focuses on the following and repeat each exercise 3-4 times (each set should include 8-12 reps) and focus on the “eccentric” phase of the muscle contraction. Eccentric phase is defined as active contraction of a muscle occurring simultaneously with lengthening of the muscle. For example “lowering” the weight on a bench press or controlling the weight as it goes up on a lat pull down machine.
Upper body push/pull hypertrophy structure for building muscle
Bench press
Bent over barbell row
Core exercise
Lat pull down machine
Barbell overhead press
Core exercise
Dumbell flat bench
Straight arm lat pull down
Core exercise
8-12 reps is just enough time under tension stimulate muscle breakdown with heavy weights. Remember, if you are not “failing” out of every set, than you are missing out on valuable break down! Make sure you can not complete your set, and that the notion of one more rep seems “impossible”.

The performance runs for 90 minutes and is followed by a post-show migration to join up with The Welcoming Committee.
