Saturday night video: Panti at TEDx Dublin
This talk was given by Panti at TEDx in Dublin, Ireland last September. Panti shares her experience of the little, everyday things that can have a huge impact on the wellbeing of gay people and shares her thoughts on navigating a world in which the simple act of holding hands can be a political statement in itself.
Hotel review: Westin Market Street in San Francisco
Earlier this month work brought me out to California. Rather than flying home right away, I decided to cash in some loyalty points and stay at the Westin Market Street in San Francisco’s SOMA district for a night so I could visit a friend I’ve known since grade school who now lives in North Beach.
When given the choice, I like to stay in SOMA. The neighborhood is convenient to touristy destinations like the waterfront and Union Square as well as the financial district and plenty of gay bars (one needn’t only spend time in The Castro).
The Westin San Francisco is situated between Mission and Market Street. The property was clean and well managed, and I would return to without hesitation. My 24th floor hotel room offered me a lovely view of Union Square which is about four blocks away. The property backs up to the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Four Seasons and a very popular Equinox gym. Additionally, a pedestrian walkway called Yerba Buena Lane has a half dozen upscale bars and restaurants all within a 2-3 minute walk.
If you are contemplating a visit to SF or have a pending trip planned, this may be a great property for you to consider booking. The hotel is large and steps from the Moscone and just a few blocks from the financial district.

Coming out
It is 2015 and for some, coming out and being true to who you are with your closest circle of friends and family can remain daunting. Watching this video of the Rhodes Brothers who are fraternal twins brought me back to when I finally came out at first to friends and later my family. It is hard to articulate how personal and terrifying this process can be for individuals and my heart broke all over again watching this clip. I have no idea what their relationship with their father is like who apparently does not live near his sons, but his response was spot on, which only made me get more choked up. Nearly 20 years later and I still get emotional watching the stress and pain associated with coming out.
Much thanks to NewNowNext for sharing this story since I don’t subscribe to the Rhodes Bros YT channel and missed this post from earlier in the month.

Boston Magazine: A Chef’s Guide to Eating Well in the South End
Read Boston Magazine’s article penned by Christopher Hughes, A Chef’s Guide to Eating Well in the South End. Hughes, the magazine’s online food editor, asked Ken Oringer (Clio, Uni & Toro) and Top Chef season 10 winner Kristen Kish to share their favorite South End spots.
The article really illustrates how lucky South End residents are, showcasing a wide variety of options. If you are curious where Oringer and Kish go for cocktails and / or cuisine check out the article. My only surprise – even though I agreed with many of their choices – was how many other options we have in this tiny neighborhood that went unmentioned.
How can anyone overlook such neighborhood gems like Formaggio with their superior selection of cheeses and meats or Brix with their unique selection of small vintage wineries? Restaurants and bakeries like South End Pita, Orinoco, Elephant Walk and Render Coffee add color and options that most neighborhoods would kill to have but the South End has such a rich collection it is easy to forget all the markets, restaurants, bakeries and cafes crammed into this tiny n’hood.
I am the locker room guy from Jimmy Kimmel Live
Is there any doubt that Late Night TV is in the midst of a Renaissance? I love Kimmel’s fictitious beef with Damon that goes back to when his former girlfriend, Sarah Silverman shared this hilarious video, I’m F*cking Matt Damon.
I’ve not been following the details of ‘DeflateGate’, but this video from Jimmy Kimmel Live last night is hilarious. Love all those local Boston actors.
“Untitled” (Go-Go Dancing Platform), 1991
Are you one of those guys who doesn’t like going to museums? Do you find them stuffy and boring? Maybe this exhibit in Los Angeles is more your speed.
Cuban artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’, takes the male body out of the gay club and into the museum. The installation at UCLA’s Hammer Museum consists of a lit-up platform, that is empty most of the time except for five minutes a day when a go-go dancer randomly appears. Unscheduled and unannounced, the performer dances to the music blaring from his headphones, inaudible to the guests at the museum. Not your typical installation for sure.
Thanks to Oscar Raymundo and his blog Confessions of a Boy Toy for bringing this story to my attention.
Cafe Quattro opening in the South End
Boston Restaurant Talk reports that Cafe Quattro, a popular Italian / Pizzeria with Beacon Hill residents will reopen in the South End.
Apparently the popular restaurant lost its lease in Beacon Hill after the landlord essentially forced them out to make room for a larger upscale restaurant. Beacon Hill’s loss is the South End’s gain. Cafe Quattro will reopen at 817 Harrison Avenue on the corner of East Springfield Street. The owners were scheduled to go before the licensing commission this week (not sure if the weather has delayed that meeting). One hopes they will be opening soon.
About Cafe Quattro: We serve a wide array of sandwiches, panini, wraps, and pizza, as well as cappuccino, espresso, latte, and coffee. Our breads are baked especially for us and delivered daily. Our thin crust pizza is hand tossed and made to order, using fresh dough. Pizza is available by the slice, small personal pies, or 20″ Large pies each made in the old fashioned Italian-American tradition.

Wine review: Seghesio Zinfandel
Seghesio Family Vineyards is located in Healdsburg in Sonoma Valley, CA and it was this fact that tipped the scales when I was contemplating purchasing their 2013 Zinfandel.
Several years back Sergio and I attended a fun wedding in Healdsburg so as illogical as it may be to associate a happy occasion with good wine, I can’t help but try wines from wineries based in Healdsburg. Thus far, I’ve not been disappointed.
As it turns out Seghesio Winery is best known for their Zinfandel, and for those (like me) who enjoy this wine, Seghesio is a solid choice that seems to produce a consistent product. Wine Spectator has given the 2013 vintage 92-points and described it as “a lively, zesty red…” I agree with their sentiments but would encourage you to decant the wine before serving. I shared this wine alongside a traditional Italian American meal that included eggplant parmesan, meatballs, linguine and a rich, meaty red sauce. It seemed to me this wine was ideally suited for the dinner and enhanced the flavors of the meal significantly.
The wine also would make for an excellent host / dinner party gift, retailing outside of California for approximately $20.
