Boston’s Hubway contemplates year-round service

Boston HubwayBoston’s bike sharing program, The Hubway, closed for the winter last week. Officials report that The Hubway recorded more than 530,000 rides before closing for the season; roughly 50% better than expected. The program’s popularity with tourists and residents alike means you can expect to see The Hubway continue to expand beyond it’s current 100+ bike stations and 1,000+ bikes in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline.

The program’s success also has officials now contemplating winter service; creating year-round service for members. According to The Boston Globe article this could happen as soon as next December. Current contracts and permits call for a nearly four-month closure, but the two-thirds of Hubway stations located on plazas and sidewalks could remain in place without posing an obstacle for street plowing.

Do you use The Hubway system here in Boston? Would you brave the ice, snow and cold in the winter to use the bike sharing program if stations remained open next winter?

Praia Mole: Where the gays are

Florianopolis is a small city by Brazilian standards, but most who travel here never set foot in the downtown preferring the natural beauty the island has to offer, which includes scores of beaches, plenty of forest, dunes and a couple of gorgeous lakes.  For years many gay Paulistas and Cariocas have been coming to Florianopolis, but recently this has become a destination for many gay travelers from Europe, Australia and North America. Just an hour flight south of Sao Paulo makes it relatively easy to get here.

Mole Beach FlorianopolisPraia Mole is known as the gay beach on the island.  This is a beautiful beach on the east side of the island that extends nearly 1 kilometer.  The far end of the beach, near an outcropping of over-sized boulders is the gay bar, Bar do Deca. Although the nightclubs are all located in the city, if the weather is good – the guys will mostly be at Praia Mole.

Should you want to explore the city, another advantage to this part of the island is that it is fairly convenient to Florianopolis (a taxi is approximately $30 each way).  We used our central location to visit other parts of the island; perhaps the most notable location was Sambaqui, a quaint neighborhood on the west side of the island.  From our restaurant in Sambaqui we had a beautiful view of Florianopolis.

Praia Mole Bar do Deca

Here are more photos of this beautiful Brazilian beach. Praia Mole FlorianopolisFloripa Gay BeachPraia Mole FloripaAfter we left this part of the island we ventured north to Jurere and the slightly newer and wealthier Jurere International.  While Praia Mole rightly deserves the reputation as the “gay beach” there is no doubt that if you go to the beach club / bar Taiko in Jurere International you will be far from alone, but more on that in a future post.

Back at work

buried-under-paperworkWhile I do not expect any sympathy I have to admit that after being away from the office for more than two weeks, I am absolutely buried with work.  Everything has piled up in my absence and deadlines are hitting fast and furious.

I’ll use the memories of Brazil to motivate me and dream about my next trip to distract me from my hum-drum routine.  Watch for posts for the next few days about my time in Florianopolis and Sao Paulo Brazil.

BTW – thank you for visiting my blog both while I was away and now that I’m back home again.

Andy Husbands menu featured in Terminal E

Andy HusbandsCongrats to South End chef and restaurant owner, Andy Husbands, who is the latest local visiting chef to be featured at Dine Boston at Logan Airport’s Terminal E. Located before you need to enter security, Andy’s menu starts tomorrow, December 5th and includes fried Brussels sprouts; hanger steak with Swiss chard, wild mushrooms, and fontina-stuffed tater tots (OMG); and goat cheese cheesecake.

Trojan vibrator give away in Boston

Trojan VibrationsIn late October, Boston’s Mayor Menino made it clear that he was not impressed with Trojan’s decision to give away a few thousand “Trojan Vibrations” sex toys from their “Pleasure Carts” on City Hall Plaza.  Read more here.

Fortunately Trojan was not discouraged by the Mayor’s stonewalling and lack of enthusiasm, and they decided my neighborhood in the South End would be a fantastic alternate location.  Yesterday, Sergio and our friend Maxine joined thousands of others who came out to get their own intimate massager from Trojan.  Earlier this summer Trojan kicked off this tour in NYC.  I believe that Boston is the second city Trojan has visited. Like the Trojan Vibrations Facebook page to find out when / if Trojan will be coming to a city near you.

Visiting Florianopolis

Floripa MapI love to travel to Brazil.  It is a warm tropical country in the Southern hemisphere that makes for a perfect getaway anytime but especially from December through March – when my home, Boston, is usually freezing. This year my partner and I opted to spend a week in Florianopolis (Floripa), which is a one hour flight south of Sao Paulo.  While business brings some to Floripa it is the 200+ square mile island that draws thousands of tourists.

Our trip to Floripa started in the centrally located Barra da Lagoa  neighborhood, which is a hilly stretch of land between the island’s Lagoa da Conceicao and the South Atlantic Ocean; specifically Praia Mole. We also hired a taxi to take us to Santo Antonio de Lisboa and Sambaqui where we had a very relaxing lunch with views of the city of Florianopolis off on the horizon.   These two quaint neighborhoods are picture perfect and provided for a nice option to the beach since I needed a break from the beach (well to be more specific my pale skin needed the break).

Barra da Lagoa FloripaWhere to go in Barra da Lagoa:  For food check out Bistro Isadora Duncan or for a less expensive option Pacai which is located next door.   For fun during the day, pack a bag and walk 20-minutes to Praia Mole and set up next to the gay bar on the beach, Bar do Deca.  I’ll write a bit more about Praia Mole this week.

Florianopolis prominence has made Jurere and Jurere International a hot spot for wealthy tourists from around the world. Located further north, the area is still being developed but has a definite Miami-vibe.  Ocean-facing mansions and affluent neighborhoods with cobbled streets might make you forget you’re in Brazil.   While many of the resorts in this area cater to families, there is still plenty of people watching and fun to be had in both Jurere and neighboring Jurere International which is a newer and even more affluent.

Jurere InternationalWhere to go in Jurere: There are several options for dining but our favorite location was the beachside bar Taiko at Jurere International. While the kitchen won’t win any awards, the views from here are spectacular – regarding both the nature and the visitors.  As with Praia Mole I’ll write a bit more about Jurere and Jurere International later.

Funny street sign

Funny SignTravel + Leisure encourages their readers to submit funny street signs they see when traveling.  I assume that this was taken some place near Boston since you regularly hear people say “Go Thissa Way“.

Rob Wilson from The Price is Right

Earlier this year Rob Wilson from Boston was selected to be the first male model for the Price is Right.  I like to refer to this handsome Bostonian as “the other Rob Wilson from Boston”.  Recently BuzzFeed included several outtakes from an earlier underwear photo shoot for Men’s Underwear Store.

20th anniversary of text messaging

Text messagingToday marks the 20th anniversary of text messaging.  Can you believe it?  Although I predate text messaging (by a lot) it is hard for me to imagine life without the ability to text.

I have come to use text messaging as one of my primary ways to communicate with friends. I’m far more inclined to text a friend to see if they are busy than call.

Without this technology, one of my favorite sites Texts From Last Night would never have been created. Are you a texting-fiend or do you barely ever text?

Holiday light and sound show at Faneuil Hall

While I was away, Blink, a light and sound show started a six week run in Faneuil Hall.

Blink includes music from the Boston Pops, 350,ooo LED lights and an 85′ high Christmas tree.  It looks quite beautiful, and I hope to see it firsthand but until then I have BMadden from YouTube to thank for sharing this taping when they were testing it one evening.

Blink occurs between 4:30 to 10:00pm each half hour through December 31st.

Santa Speedo Run next Saturday

BosGuyOne week from today Boston will host the 13th annual Santa Speedo Run through the Back Bay; spectators, mark your calendars; runners take note of the forecast and pray for warm temperatures.

Earlier this month I post my video from the 2011 run, below is a video from the Santa Speedo Run from 2010.  Can’t make it to Boylston Street next Saturday? No worries, I’ll be there snapping photographs and chatting with runners to tell you all about it.

World AIDS Day

I’m still traveling, but I wanted to remind everyone that today is World AIDS Day.

The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is the largest AIDS Service Organization in New England and they are always looking for volunteers and donations.  Interested? You may learn more about how to get involved or to make a donation by visiting here.

If you live in Boston, look to the Prudential this evening.  The top of the building will be alight in red in honor of World AIDS Day.  If you would like to learn more about World AIDS Day you may visit here.

The Whisky Advent Calendar

This is a bit different from the Advent calendar I recall having as a kid growing up. Perhaps my parents had this discretely tucked away somewhere. Believe it or not, this is a legitimate gift that may be purchased for approximately $240.00. More information here.
