This week on Instagram: sape91

So I have to thank blogger Kenneth in the 212 who first made me aware of this Italian ballet dancer who lives in Brooklyn, when he shared this New York Post story back in late January. Apparently, Saverio Pescucci caught the attention of a Facebook group when he was looking for a roommate earlier this year. In the article he is quoted as saying, “I saw a lot of people … posting pictures of themselves, like selfies and casual photos, to show that they’re not sociopaths or what kind of lifestyle they have,” Pescucci, 29, told The Post. “I did the same [but] I was not imagining that it would turn into an episode of ‘The Bachelor.’ “

The story has a happy ending. Apparently, Pescucci eventually found a place in Williamsburg but not from his viral post which garnered 600 likes and more than 400 comments! If you’d like to follow this handsome dancer, check out his Instagram account. He is fairly active posting selfies and poses of him dancing like the one I shared below.

Caption this photo

I’ve shared this photo previously but it has been quite some time and I do love this. It practically begs for a humorous caption or two. Hopefully the one I’ve shared inspires you to offer up one or two of your own. Leave a funny caption as a comment for this post, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

JetBlue Mint Suites for Boston and NYC flights to London look ahhhmazing

JetBlue is expected to begin nonstop service between Boston and New York City to London in their third quarter between July 1 and September 30, 2021. When those flights begin, JetBlue’s Mint Service (the airline’s business class service) will take to the air featuring one of the largest beds available to customers.

The airline’s A321neos new “Mint Studio” (shown below) will consist of two mini-rooms at the front of its newest planes, each with a comfortable seat that turns into its own fully flat bed behind a privacy door with an adjoining sofa that, with the seat, converts to one of the largest beds in the air. Behind those come 22 “Mint Suites”, minus the adjoining sofa.

Reviews of the new Mint Studio are enough to make anyone who has taken long night flights drool with envy. The company put a lot of thought behind the comfort and design with details like wireless charging, multiple power points, space to work while eating, a tuft & needle mattress, and other thoughtful touches that other U.S. airlines don’t come close to offering.

For those of you patiently (or not so patiently) waiting until it is safe to travel again, this may be a tempting treat for your next flight to London. While the seats will certainly be costly (I couldn’t find any information on pricing), JetBlue traditionally offers more competitive pricing than traditional carriers. Check out the Mint Service and as JetBlue calls it the “Suite Life” video below.

Modus Vivendi GLAM MEANDER Line

I’m mixing things up by including photos of some of my favorite new bathing suits from Modus Vivendi for 2021. The press release points to how fresh and pleasing this year’s color palette is, but I find the models even more so. Bathing suit season is coming up fast so check out their website to see their entire line of 2021 Modus Vivendi swimsuits.

BosGuy cooks: Browning vs. caramelizing onions

I love onions. I use them in nearly everything I cook so I will occassionally brown or caramelize onions. When I’m done I’ll put them in the refrigerator to be used in sandwiches, salads or dinners later that week. The main difference between browning and caramelizing onions is time and temperature. I’ll explain more below.

Browning is a technique that uses a little oil (I use grapeseed / or canola oil) and a sprinkling of salt over thinly sliced onions. The outsides of the onion will brown in 15 – 20 minutes (just be careful not to burn the onions by stirring regularly). This isn’t something you can walk away from once you start.

The image above is what it should look like when you are done browning onions. In this batch, there is a lack of conistency in coloring but for my purposes it was more than fine. Don’t let imperfection prevent you from giving this a try. What matters is you like the taste and they add flavor to whater you add them to.

Caramelizing follows a similar technique (I use olive oil) and a sprinkling of salt over thinly sliced onions. However, I start by heating the pan with oil on medium heat and after a minute or two add the onions. Immediately turn the pan to down to medium low heat and stir until the onions are a dark brown, which takes a good 45 minutes.

In the photos above you can see how the onions start to brown on the left after cooking for a few minutes. The image on the right is what the onions looked like after approximately 20 minutes of browning.

Cooking tip: After I brown or caramelize onions, I usually make a dinner with that pan so the flavor and bits of onion still in the pan can be used to flavor my meal. Add a bit of wine or butter and use a wooden spatula to scrape off the bits to add more flavor to whatever you are about to cook.

Cleaning tip: Add some water and soap detergent then place the pan on your stovetop on low heat. After 2-3 minutes take the pan off the stove and wash in the sink.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

This week’s riddle came from the popular NPR Sunday Puzzle by Will Shortz. I’ve included two hints below the teaser which you can read if you need extra help figuring out the correct response.

This week’s brain teaser:  Name a well-known, U.S. city in two words (5, 3). Change the first letter of the second word and you will come up with the name of a popular rock group. What is the name of the city and the rock group?

Here are two hints: The U.S. city is in the Midwest and the rock group achieved fame in the 1990s

Porsha Olayiwola – “Unnamed”

Porsha Olayiwola is Boston’s poet laureate, but I was unaware of her until I read a recent article in The Boston Globe magazine about her commission to write a poem exploring the history of Black Boston. The article shares how Porsha first came to Boston a decade ago to work at the Pine Street Inn and the cultural shock of moving from her predominantly black neighborhood in Chicago to Boston’s South End. She writes of her move to Boston and her experience over the past decade as she has come to make Boston her home, here.

But the reason I wrote this post is to share a fiery video of Porsha from a few years ago at the Camp Bar in St. Paul, Minnesota where she shared her unapologetic anger and frustration in her poem, Unnamed. It evokes strong emotion through language. Weaving upsetting and unsettling images and reminders of our past, Porsha shares her perspective on the power of a name. The language is strong and the anger palpable. It is a powerful poem.

You can read more of her work, see more of her videos, and learn more about Porsha online at porshaolayiwola.com. She is a force to be reckoned with and I hope to see and hear a lot more of her here in Boston in the years that follow.

Vintage gay

Much thanks to Peter Miller who regularly shares amazing photos from the past for this weekly post. One cannot help but look at the gentleman in the upper right; are the two men joking around or is there something more between the two men? Regardless, the spontaneous pose is unusual for the 1880s or 1890s when Peter surmises this may have been taken.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.
