Boston earns perfect MEI score (again)

Human Rights Campaign MEI, LGBTQ equality rankingsThe Municipal Equality Index (MEI) examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of the LGBTQ people who live and work there in more than 500 cities from every state in the U.S.

Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership’s public position on equality.

This year marks the fifth year of this annual edition, and I’m proud to share that each year, my hometown, Boston has achieved a perfect score.

11th annual Northeastern underwear run is tonight

As tradition has it, Northeastern’s annual underwear run always falls on the Friday night of parent’s weekend so if you are out and about tonight in the Back Bay don’t be shocked if you see a crowd of several hundred (last year it was about a thousand) students running down Huntington Avenue and Boylston Street in their underwear tonight.

Boston pays tribute to John Michael Gray (one half of the Hat Sisters)

gay bostonOn Sunday, October 16th the Arlington Street Church in Back Bay was filled to capacity as family, friends and members of the Boston LGBTQ community came together for a service in celebration of the life of John Michael Gray (one half of the Hat Sisters).

Mayor Marty Walsh addressed those gathered and a surprisingly personal and touching letter from Gov. Charlie Baker that was sent to Tim O’Connor, in the days following Gray’s death was read. Friends and former colleagues shared personal (and funny) stories about Gray. The emotionally charged celebration paid a fitting tribute to this local icon, who gave so much of himself to the LGBTQ communities of Provincetown and Boston. Following the service Club Cafe closed for a special, private reception that had photographs of the couple’s 30+ years together as the Hat Sisters.  I feel lucky to have meet these two men and wanted to write this post to say thank you to everyone who helped organize and spoke at the tribute. It was incredibly touching and well done. My love and thoughts now turn to his wonderful spouse, Tim.

GoFundMe page was set up after Gray’s death to help Tim O’Connor (Gray’s husband) defray the medical expenses incurred during his treatment. It is still up for anyone who would like to contribute.

Boston named one of the most unequal cities in the US

Boston waterfront skylineThe city of Boston earned a dubious distinction recently by Bloomberg, which ranked all American cities with more than 250,000 people to determine which were the most unequal. Using something called the Gini coefficient, an index that measures the distribution of household income based on 2015 U.S. Census Bureau data, they ranked Miami the most unequal city in the United States.

While I don’t always understand ranking systems like this, I do lend more weight to them when they are published by reputable organizations like Bloomberg. So I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see Boston ranked in the top 10. The silver lining that I take from this is that as an expensive city, it will likely always be a place where there is more inequity than we might like.

I do hold out hope that initiatives Mayor Walsh’s “Boston 2030”, which looks to build 50,000+ new middle income priced homes / units by 2030 and efforts to bring good jobs (e.g. GE relocating their global headquaters to Boston) can help to bring both more economic parity and make it more affordable so anyone (no matter what their career) can feel like they can make Boston their home.

Mehdi Ghadyanloo to paint Dewey Square mural

BosArts, boston public art, Mehdi GhadyanlooLast week it was announced that Iranian artist, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, who has made a name for himself by painting large trompe-l’oeils in Tehran, will bring a brand-new, mind-bending mural to Boston’s Dewey Square on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

The 76′ x 70′ surface will be the fifth public art installation in Dewey Square and will be both a new piece and his first in the U.S. Called, Spaces of Hope, it is sure to be inspired by Surrealism which characterizes his work to date. It is expected to take him through the middle of October to complete the large mural which you can see being painted currently. This is a welcome change to the most recent installation in Dewey Square which I found cold and uninspiring.

Below is an example of some of the work he has done in his home, Iran. Mehdi Ghadyanloo

John Michael Gray (one half of the Hat Sisters)

john-michael-gray-hat-sisterBoston and Provincetown’s gay community is a little less fabulous today.

John Michael Gray who is survived by his husband Tim O’Connor have been known far beyond Boston and Provincetown as the iconic “Hat Sisters” for as long as I have lived in Boston.

For those of you from Boston and Provincetown, I’m sure your Facebook feed is already flooded with tributes and photos of these two very special men, and I wanted to join in my own way by sharing how much I love these two. I want to also express my profound respect for how their love for each other and Boston and Provincetown helped many of us become a little more comfortable with ourselves and feel welcomed. My fondest memories of John are of him having drinks at Fritz on Chandler Street, lighting the Pride Lights tree on Tremont Street each year and of course his fabulous entrance to Tea Dances at the Boatslip in Provincetown.

My heart is breaking for Tim O’Connor.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Tim with the medical costs incurred. You can learn more and help Tim by visiting the page here.

What Iconic Boston Street Are You?

boston-streetsPerhaps you’ve seen friends posting different streets in your news feed? It turns out that BuzzFeed has a rather fun survey that takes about 30 seconds to navigate, answering questions like choosing your ideal food, how you like to spend a Sunday afternoon, etc…

Based on your answers BuzzFeed shares what “Iconic Boston Street” your personality most resembles. Although highly unscientific it is still a lot of fun. As it turns out I’m most like Charles Street in Beacon Hill. What are you?
