Survey says Boston has the highest average meal prices in U.S.

Chef CookingIf you think dining in Boston is getting more expensive you would be correct based on the findings of a recent survey published by Alignable Main Street Insights that was based on research done by First Data.

According to the findings, Boston ranks as the most expensive city in the United States with the average meal price of $44.02.  That price point also made Boston the city with the highest weekly revenue transactions for restaurants, despite only ranking only 5th in the number of average weekly transactions. restaurant, diningFor all of you who want to read more about the survey findings, which ranked and compared the 25 biggest cities in America, click here.

Boston Gay Men’s book club meets Monday, July 18th

Boston Gay Men's Book ClubBefore you head out for the long holiday weekend to celebrate July 4th, I wanted to let you know that Boston’s Gay Men’s Book Club will be meeting in a few weeks on Monday, July 18th at the Trident Booksellers and Cafe to discuss The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle.  If you are looking for some funny reading over the holiday, check out this month’s book by Federle.

About the Book: Quinn Roberts is a sixteen-year-old smart aleck and Hollywood hopeful whose only worry used to be writing convincing dialogue for the movies he made with his sister Annabeth. Of course, that was all before—before Quinn stopped going to school, before his mom started sleeping on the sofa…and before the car accident that changed everything.

Enter: Geoff, Quinn’s best friend who drags Quinn to his first college party, where instead of nursing his pain, he meets a guy— a hot guy—and falls, hard. What follows is an upside-down week in which Quinn begins imagining his future as a screenplay that might actually have a happily-ever-after ending—if, that is, he can finally step back into the starring role of his own life story.

You may purchase the book online but go out and support an independent bookseller, read the book and RSVP to join the group next month.

Boston ranked best U.S. city for digital entrepreneurs

boston-skyline.jpgPardon me while I use this post to brag. Last month Forbes Magazine published a report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which shared their analysis of 25 cities’ competitiveness to identify which American cities are most ready for the digital revolution they expect will transform every industry, from robotics to healthcare in the coming years.

According to their findings the odds on favorite, San Francisco, has become “too cutthroat to inspire success.” Boston was identified as the U.S. city best placed to capitalize on the shift to a digital economy.  A worsening quality of life pushed tech-centered San Francisco Bay Area into second place.

The analysis, “Innovation That Matters 2016,” ranked cities in six categories: talent; capital; industry specialization; culture, such as quality of life and regulation; and ties among entrepreneurs, universities, corporations, governments and others.

Curious to see where your city ranked? You can read the full article in Forbes here or you can read The Chambers report here.

The amount of development taking place in Boston is impressive but Curbed Boston helped put the crazy development we see in the Seaport in perspective in their post Five Big Post WWII Changes That Shaped Modern Boston

urban renewal

In the late 1950s Boston’s entire West End neighborhood was razed

The most dramatic and possibly unwelcome change was the city’s wholesale demolition of the West End and the displacement of thousands of residents,  all in the name of urban renewal. This alone offers insight how and why neighborhood groups became so vocal and powerful in Boston. The image on the left shows a crowded neighborhood made up of multifamily brick buildings and the image to the right shows open space which in the years that followed came to be populated by mostly ugly and uninspiring concrete structures.

Boston Back Bay High Spine Architecture

Boston’s “High Spine” in the Back Bay

Other developments of note included the High Spine which started in the 1960s with the building of the Prudential in the Back Bay and continues to be developed today. Also noted was the decline of the Combat Zone (Boston’s Red Light District) sandwiched between Boston’s Theater District, Downtown Crossing and Chinatown, which is now home to some of Boston’s largest high end residences, including the posh Ritz Carlton residences. The article closes referencing both the Big Dig and the flurry of development which continues now as the city’s newest neighborhood, The Seaport, takes shape.

You can read the full article here.

Two large residential projects given green light

New Development: South Bay Town Center, 1,000,000 Sq Ft in Dorchester

New Development: South Bay Town Center, 1,000,000 Sq Ft in Dorchester

Two large real estate developments in neighborhoods near the South End were given the green light last week by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

The first development, South Bay Town Center, aims to give the South Bay Shopping Center a more residential feel. The project reminds me of the Avalon At Assembly Row development in Somerville. South Bay Shopping Center will include five 6-story buildings that will include one million square feet with 475 units of housing (62 reserved for affordable units), a 130-room hotel, 125,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, a cinema and two parking garages for approximately 1,100 vehicles. Work on the large project will take place in three phases and is expected to be completed by mid 2018.

New Seaport Residential Development

New Seaport Residential Development

One of the largest developments to date in the Seaport was also approved last week. The newly approved project in Seaport Square will have 735 condos and apartments over 3.5 acres, plus 125,000 square feet of retail and 300,000 square feet of underground parking. Current plans show one tower with 275 condos, another with 180 condos, and a third with 280 apartments (or condos, depending on the market).

The project proposal also includes a pedestrian mall called Atrium Lane and a central plaza called Harbor Square. I’m curious to see how this project takes shape and if any affordable units will be included in this (my least favorite) downtown neighborhood in Boston.
