Get up and enjoy the day. Today Boston will actually hit 50 degrees.

No plans on Sunday afternoon? You may want to talk to your buddies this weekend and check out this Sunday’s Back2Basics Tea Dance at Club Cafe which will be spinning 80s classics from 5 pm to 10 pm.
Did you read the Boston Herald this morning? Most likely not, so you likely missed this gem from John “Wacko” Hurley.
Parade organizer John “Wacko” Hurley said…”there’s no way, shape or form that they’re (MassEquality) going to get back in…I went into a bar and got a beer today, and I got more cheers than I ever got in my life…” More here.
I couldn’t help but post this photo after I saw it here.
Last week The Walt Disney Company gave notice to the Boy Scouts of America that it will pull all funding to the group starting in 2015 because of their membership policy that bans gay leaders.
Scouts for Equality, which says it works to end discrimination within the BSA, praised Walt Disney World for ending local support for the BSA’s Central Florida Council. Disney now joins Alcoa, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Major League Soccer, Merck, Intel and UPS as companies who have ended partnerships with the Scouts because of their policy banning gay leaders.

The Trophy Room (a.k.a. The Old Fritz) has a Facebook page that you may want to check out and like if you’re into that sort of thing. The owners of The Chandler Inn will be reopening a newly remodeled space that will operate as a bar and restaurant in the near future. That new space will be called The Trophy Room. Currently their Facebook page alludes to a spring opening and shares artist renderings of the design and decor you can expect to see when they open for business.
Stay tuned…
Boston Spirit magazine will host their 7th annual LGBT Executive Networking Night on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Over the years this event has grown so despite the fact that it is more than a month away, I would highly recommend registering before they fill to capacity and cannot accept anymore RSVPs.
The night of networking will take place at the Marriott Boston Copley Place Ballroom from 6-9:00 pm. This year’s keynote speaker is Sudbury, MA native and well respected, comedian Paula Poundstone.
LGBT Executive Networking Night Marriott Boston Copley Place Thursday, April 17, 2014 $10 Admission Fee Reserve Your Place Today HereToday is the final day of the Sochi Olympic games and I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that hosting the games in homophobic Russia has been a blessing in disguise for the gay community.
Gay rights have been consistently discussed during the Olympic Games. Air time has been provided to discuss Russia’s discriminatory legislation in a way I’ve rarely seen in the US; we tend to only report on what happens here at home, forgetting there is a world beyond our borders.
While these protests may have fallen on deaf ears in Russia, the conversation has taken on new meaning here in the US. I can’t help but wonder was Michael Sam’s historic announcement days after the Opening Ceremony at Sochi intentional? It seems to have added fuel here in the US to fighting homophobia in sport; against the backdrop of the Sochi Olympics the conversation seemed all the more poignant.
Homophobia thrives when it is unchallenged. The 1980s gay activist group ACT UP had it right; Silence = Death. Although they were fighting for more AIDS funding and helping those dying from AIDS to live their final days with dignity, the mantra remains true so I hope the dialog started and scrutiny focused on Russia continues after the Olympic torch goes out in Sochi.
UPDATE Fritz will not reopen in the Red Fez: details here
One of my most read blog posts from 2013 Farewell to Fritz appears to have been incorrect. At the time Fritz had announced they would close in early 2014 to remodel but would reopen better than before. However, persistent rumors led me and others to believe Fritz days were numbered, and I bemoaned the loss of a great gay neighborhood / sports bar.
Now rumors indicate that Fritz will indeed reopen but not in the Chandler Inn space. This blogger has been told that Fritz will get the keys to The Red Fez at 1222 Washington Street in the South End in early March and they plan to reopen there. The new space is double the size of the original bar, has a full kitchen, patio and parking for patrons.
I’ll continue to look into these rumors. It isn’t clear if the owners plan to do any remodeling or when they may open, but if you have any news to share, contact me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
One month from today Boston’s traditional (although no longer truly) Irish neighborhood, Southie, will host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Boston’s former mayor, Tom Menino, made news back in 1994 when he did the unthinkable in Irish-Boston and took the organizers of Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade to court for banning “The Gays”. The parade that year was cancelled by the organizers rather than comply with the State’s highest court which ruled against them. Later they were allowed to maintain their “no gays” ban thanks to the US Supreme Court but Menino never joined the parade in the 20 years he served this city as mayor to show his support for Boston’s LGBT community.
This gay voter has a long memory and I wanted to say thank you to Mr. Menino. I remember 1994. Will & Grace hadn’t even premiered yet (it started in 1998). To put this in perspective, two years later in 1996 Bill Clinton would sell-out the LGBT community by signing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law.
Yesterday, the traditionally conservative but trending progressive state of Virginia got a little more progressive when a Federal judge ruled that Virginia’s marriage ban is unconstitutional.
What a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift for the thousands of LGBT couples who call Virginia home. This was the second favorable ruling on marriage equality from a Southern state in as many days; a judge in Kentucky ruled on Wednesday that the Bluegrass state had to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. The Virginia judge’s ruling follows similar decisions in Utah and Oklahoma federal courts.

I took the free online Gay Cliques Test and came away with the following results: 44% Twink, 52% Bear, 68% Daddy, 39% Cub, 44% Otter, 50% Pup, 72% Muscle_Pup, 71% Wolf and 54% Gym_Bunny. I don’t really understand what any of that means; how can one be 44% Twink and 52% Bear – seems impossible. I broke down the quiz’s description of me according to how Gay Cliques interpreted my responses to the 2-minute quiz.
Oddly I’m labeled “The Muscle Pup” despite not having much muscle mass nor being of a “pup” like age. According to this fun, free and easy online quiz, I “have average height, hairiness, looks, and sex appeal.”
“Your best friends are Gym bunnies, and other Pups“, Um… not really although I do love bunnies and puppies. The quiz goes on to suggest that I am attracted to Twinks, Gym Bunnies, and Otters. All true I suppose as I like all sorts of men.
