Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter.

If so inclined, leave them a nice comment and start following on Twitter.

AnthonyPalazolo – This handsome 20-something is personal trainer and model who splits his time between Los Angeles and Seattle.  This buff Italian-American has appeared in various magazines and underwear / swimwear campaigns.  He’s currently preparing to do his first fitness magazine shoot in February 2012. Heads up to the men in Hillcrest as he’s contemplating a move to San Diego next year, but beware Anthony is already taken (no surprise there).  #BuffItalian

RodBeto – A.K.A. Rodrigo is originally from Mexico City but has spent the last 10 years traveling the world and performing for Disney on Ice.  A three-time National Champion figure skater, he has adopted Boston as his new home and is starting a new chapter in his life as a skating coach.  I wish this friendly guy luck with his career and would like to welcome him to Boston.  Rodrigo’s tweets vacillate between English and Spanish.  #sweetNsexy

Mick_Fanning – For a second week in a row, an Aussie has caught my attention and been posted as a #MenOfTwitter.  This 30-something is a professional surfer who is a two-time world champion in his sport.  He currently resides in Puerto Rico but travels the world.  Like me you can live vicariously through his tweets and some of the amazing photos he regularly includes. #EasyOnTheEyesAussie

My promise to politicians

Most of those who oppose same sex marriage hide behind thinly veiled prejudices shrouded in moral overtones that reek of discrimination.   Am I a one issue-voter; absolutely not, but if you are not in favor of same-sex marriage you probably won’t get my vote.  Moreover, I’ll have a tough time respecting you and will likely work to financially support those who will run against you.

Bigots prefer to remain anonymous

According to the Advocate Magazine, the  Seattle Weekly has posted on the Internet a previously secret list of more than 100,000 people who signed a petition that tried to overturn domestic partnerships in Washington.  After the contentious vote (which failed), the group that organized the petition, Protect Marriage Washington, tried to keep the petitioners’ names private, but a judge ruled earlier this month the names would have to become public.

This story reminds me of the hateful petitions that turned up in Massachusetts back in 2003 after the State Supreme Court ruled banning Same Sex marriage illegal and conservative groups started petitions to have gay marriage brought to the ballot.  A local non-profit called Know Thy Neighbor started publishing the names of people who signed these petitions. Despite the best efforts of conservative groups to try and keep these names secret, every court sided with Know Thy Neighbor.

The morale of the story is, you are entitled to your opinion but your neighbor is also entitled to know because bigotry tends to shrivel and whither by the light of day.  So I say cheers to the Washington State court that ruled these names could be made public.

Personal Note: The image above was taken outside the MA State house.  I was there – not in the picture, but I was there and met that sick, demented man so I always like to post this photo because it reminds me of what hate looks like.

Acceptance trend of gays and lesbians is dramatic

Keen News Service reported last month that Americans are becoming “dramatically” more accepting of gay men and lesbians, according to a new report from a well respected, long-running social survey.  This is hardly surprising and why I get so angry with politicians, religious leaders and others who fan the flame of homophobia despite a growing divide between their twisted morality and what I’d refer to as common sense and common decency. Some of the key findings that should make the GLBT community and their allies feel good include:

In 2010, 46% surveyed supported same-sex couples marriage and 40% opposed; this shows a significant change from just over a decade ago in 1998 when only 11% supported this and 68% opposed it.

In 1973, 70% surveyed said same sex relations were “always wrong.” This rose to a high of 75%  in 1987 and 1988, but fell to 44% in 2010.

Only 32% of those under 30 felt sexual relations between same-sex adults was “always” or “almost always” wrong, versus 69% of those over 70.

David Gandy

I call this picture “Gandy Candy”

I’ve posted this picture of David Gandy before but I think it bears repeating. I know it has certainly brightened my day and hope Gandy Candy has the same effect on you.

Many LGBT patients feel alienated by their health providers

Massachusetts is a more progressive part of the US and a relatively safe haven for the LGBT community so I was surprised to read The Boston Globe article on Monday, LGBT patients search for healing; an excellent article which features the Fenway Health Clinic.

Researchers say that LGBT people are more likely to experience a variety of health problems…The reason is largely that they don’t seek health care for fear of being stigmatized in the doctor’s office.

The article is illuminating because living here it is easy to assume such problems don’t exist.  It also made me wonder if a place like MA which is welcoming to the LGBT community can still be frightening then what are the implications for those living in more isolated and intolerant places?

Despite the seriousness of the subject, I suppose I’m quite proud that The Boston Globe committed resources to report this story and it made me wish more mainstream media would follow suit.

What are your thoughts?

131,729 gay couples report they’re married

According to a new AP article nearly 132,000 gay couples report they are now married.  U.S. Census figures released earlier this week offer a snapshot of married and unmarried same-sex couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and D.C.

The Census Bureau originally reported that there were slightly more than 900,000 gay couples in the US but recently revised that number downward to just under 650,000 due to a coding error that initially exaggerated the count. However, researchers believe the new estimate could be as much as 15 percent lower than the actual number of gay couples in the U.S. because of social stigma, discrimination or other concerns about confidentiality.

Listed below are some photos. Apologies if we took your picture and it wasn’t included, but thank you for being a good sport and posing.  If you click on any of the images they will enlarge.

Americans more accepting of gay marriage and adoption rights than Britons

Many liberal Americans often put Europeans on a pedestal, commenting how socially progressive society is in the nations across the Atlantic. While its true that Europeans have more social programs, that doesn’t necessarily translate into a more tolerant society.

The Advocate reports that residents of the United Kingdom are less supportive of same sex marriage and adoption rights than their counterparts in the US.  The Advocate reports, “45% of Britons said they believe “homosexual marriages should be allowed throughout Europe.” That number is slightly lower than that in recent surveys in the United States that show support for marriage equality is at about 50% or a bit higher. The British government is considering upgrading legal same-sex civil unions to unions referred to as marriages; that could be complicated by the tepid support from the British public.”

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is ovah!

The U.S. military’s shameful and homophobic policy banning homosexuals from serving openly was officially repealed at midnight today. No doubt in the years that follow, history will remember Don’t Ask Don’t Tell as a strange policy. Initially signed into law by President Clinton, it took another Democrat, President Obama, to end this discriminatory policy some 18 years later.

Where does this rank in importance to me? Its hard to say. I never had any desire to serve in the military but the fact that this policy was on the books was shameful.   Even more frustrating is knowing that so many leading Republicans tried to stop DADT from being repealed.  Add it to one more thing that makes me despise the Republican party. Intellectually, I know the Republican party is made up of many moderates who are advocates for greater equality, but my heart has hardened over the years and I no longer consider this party a viable option for me.  Chalk up DADT as just one more nail in the Republican Party coffin, because I’ll be quite pleased to bury this shameful party which has spent the last half a century promoting divisive and prejudice-laden language.

US Open: Fernando Verdasco

The US Open started last week, and I can’t believe the tournament is nearly over. To celebrate the Open I’ve been posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I’m featuring Spanish tennis player, Fernando Verdasco, a former Top 10 player and a force to be reckoned with especially on clay.

Verdasco made it to the third round of the US Open where he lost to Jo Wilfred Tsonga – a tough competitor from France who is still in the tournament. As you can see Fernando has a killer smile to match his abs. He’s yet another tennis player I wish they would let play without a shirt. I’m fairly certain the ratings would go through the roof.

If you’d like to find out more about this handsome Spaniard you can linkhere. If you’d like to find out more about this year’s US Open you can visit the tournament’s official website,www.usopen.org.
