Fenway Health Men’s Event is March 11

Fenway Health Men's EventIn two weeks Fenway Health will host one of the largest LGBT fundraisers in New England.  The Men’s Event, which takes place on Saturday, March 11th will draw more than 1,300 supporters to raise funds for one of the nation’s largest LGBT clinics and to bring our community together to celebrate our accomplishments. Unlike recent years, a chilling shift in political currents has taken place in the United States and after having a friend in the White House for the past eight years, the LGBT community finds itself facing a President who says he’s a friend but who’s actions indicate something very different.

It is important for our community to come together and support each other which is one reason Sergio and I will be attending this year’s program. Tickets remain available for the 2016 Men’s Event on Saturday, March 19. To learn more about the event or to purchase tickets visit, mensevent.org.

To give you a taste, here is a video of Fenway Men’s event from a few years ago.

Gay and bisexual men spend a lot of time on Grindr

gay dating apps, gay hook up apps, gay datingWhile there is no shortage of dating apps on the market, a new study from New York City-based research firm, 7Park Data finds that Grindr tops the list when it comes to user engagement with the average user spending 2.75 hours a week, far surpassing other dating apps like Badoo and Tinder. Read into this what you will, but it won’t come as a surprise to gay men familiar with the app.

Grindr first launched in 2009 and is widely credited (or complained about – it all depends on your perspective) for transforming the way millions of smartphone bisexual and gay men interact with each other. Grindr now has more than 5 million monthly active users.

Have an abstastic Tuesday

abstasticI’m busy juggling two roles as I transition positions at my company so I’ve not been able to spend the amount of time I need to write all the posts I normally do each week. I didn’t think anyone would mind me inserting this photograph as a “filler” post in the interim.

Thank you for visiting my blog. If you like what you see, share on your social networks. I don’t accept any advertising and word of mouth is the only way people find out about BosGuy.com.

What percent of your state identifies as LGBT

Massachusetts courting gay travelersGallup released an interesting poll indicating which states had the highest percentage of adults in 2015 and 2016 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). No surprise here that Vermont had the highest percentage with 5.3% followed by a three way tie with Massachusetts (4.9%), California (4.9%) and Oregon (4.9%). Nevada (4.8%) rounded out the top five.  Gallup research also showed national increases in every region of the US with 4.1% of all adults in 2016 identifying as LGBT (that is up from 3.5% in 2012).

Nationally the number of LGBT increased to 4.1% in 2016

gay, lesbian, bisexual, population by stateThe Pacific Region which includes the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii, has the highest portion of LGBT-identifying adults with 4.9% of the population identifying as LGBT followed by New England (4.5%). A number of factors explain the increase in the LGBT population including but growing public acceptance and more millennials coming of age and coming out were both cited as probable reasons.

You can read more about this on the Gallup website here.

National Pride March is Sunday, June 11 in DC

LGBTQ rights, Washington DCI was inspired by the show of unity and the incredible numbers The Women’s March in D.C. and around the nation commanded earlier this month. I believe very strongly in the right to freedom of speech and assembly so when I heard about the National Pride March in Washington, D.C. in June Sergio and I decided we would skip Boston Pride, which happens the same weekend to travel to D.C. and add our voices to the chorus of protests.

I hope to see you in DC or marching in your home city this June

For those from Boston contemplating a similar trip, we were able to purchase American Airlines nonstop tickets for $153.00. Numerous affordable AirBnB options are also available if hotel room prices are too steep.

I hope this march inspires Pride celebrations across the United States to reach out beyond the LGBTQ community and draw in others to help make our voices heard through out the month of June. For those who in the past have reflected on the relevance of Pride and asked if it is still needed, I hope the disturbing rhetoric coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave makes it perfectly clear that Pride events remain relevant and important for our community.

Advocate list of queerest cities is a waste of time

advocate-queerest-cities-in-america

Despite using San Francisco’s skyline to promote their findings, San Francisco barely cracks the Top 20 based on The Advocate’s pointless metrics to create this joke of a list.

I’ll be the first to admit that I enjoy unscientific “Best of” lists and have been known to include many of them on this blog, but The Advocate’s annual list of “Queerest Cities” in America is a waste of time. Using random metrics like tour dates from a gay duo and number of gay rodeos as criteria to create their list makes me wonder why even bother?

In their latest ranking New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago don’t even make their list of 25 cities. Never mind the fact that arguably the gay capital of the US, San Francisco (which is also the skyline they use to promote the list) ranks 17th yet Irvine, CA is ranked 10th and Miami ranks 16th with St. Petersburg (a.k.a. retirement capital of the east coast) is ranked 3rd.

Perhaps the oddest finding is ranking Jersey City, NJ as America’s Queerest City. What’s the point Advocate? Are you just trying to keep your journalists busy?
