What LGBTQ hate mail feels like

While the tide of public opinion has changed in recent years, there remains a strong and vocal group who see that acceptance as a direct and personal threat to their way of life.  It is easy to disregard these groups but  that would be a mistake. Rachel Lauren Clark, a member of the Pride Toronto board, sums it up best when she says, “the worst part of hearing the hate mail read out loud wasn’t the message’s content, but the fact it is so commonplace.”

Videos like this one from Pride Toronto remind us that the discussion in the LGBT community of do we live in a post-Gay society is a bit premature.

Much thanks to JMG for sharing this.

PrEP studies highlight the importance of adherence

gilead, co-pay cardPrEP is a topic of conversation sexually active gay men should have with their doctor. While it may not make sense for everyone, understanding the impact the drug may have on you and our community is important.  Recently researchers from Gilead Sciences, Truvada’s manufacturer, presented findings from their analysis of several studies at the ASM Microbe 2016 conference in Boston. This was what they learned:

An analysis of 32 studies of Truvada a.k.a. PrEP found that almost all of those who contracted HIV had undetectable or very low levels of the drug in their bodies at the time.

The takeaway message is if you choose to use PrEP and are engaging in sexually risky behavior you MUST make sure you take your medication as prescribed. You can read the full findings online here.

Keeping with the theme of prominent gay men from years past (last week I had a photo of Oscar Wilde and his lover), this week is a photo of Walt Whitman – one of America’s most celebrated poets and his muse and younger lover (he had a penchant for younger men), Peter Doyle.

#MyFirstGayBar: Neighbours in Seattle

#MyFirstGayBarSince the shooting in Orlando many have taken to Twitter with the hashtag #MyFirstGayBar. The tragedy in Orlando underscores a conversation that the gay community has been having with itself for nearly a decade about the relevance or need for “community” and in particular the role of gay bars as one of the foundations of the gay community.

Boston watched their LGBT bookstores close one by one, followed by many popular gay bars in the early 2000s as the traditional enclave – the South End – saw more men leaving and more heterosexual couples moving in. In light of the Orlando shooting, which in my mind was both an act of terrorism and a hate crime, it reminds me how important it is to retain businesses that are here first and foremost to serve the local LGBT community.

#MyFirstGayBar was Neighbours Nightclub in Seattle. What was yours?

Earlier this week HBO released the trailer, and it made the rounds on many gay blogs, but if you’ve yet to see it, check it out here.

Equality For All Americans

Equality for All Americans NowMy good friend wrote a call to action blog post earlier this week in reaction to the violence in Orlando last weekend and I wanted to share it.

Read and share: You Think You Know.

You Think You KnowFACT: One of the survivors of the Orlando shooting could be fired from their job or kicked out of their apartment simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Throughout most of Florida, it is legal to fire someone or deny them access to housing or public accommodations because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).
