Senator Scott Brown Bay Windows guest opinion

I’ve been openly critical of Senator Scott Brown’s lack of dialog with the LGBT community. No matter how you slice the demographics, MA has one of the largest LGBT populations in the country so to categorically ignore such a vocal and politically active constituency has made no sense.

Compound his total silence to date with the fact that his predecessor (the late Sen. Kennedy) not only maintained open dialog with the LGBT community but was also a huge champion and leader of LGBT rights.  To have such sudden and unwanted silence from our US Senator has been more than disappointing – its been disconcerting.

You may read Senator Brown’s guest opinion in Bay Windows, but if you cannot get access to a hard copy it is also available online here.

In the guest opinion, Senator Brown describes how he approached such important LGBT votes like DADT (by the way his support was crucial). He spends a fair amount of time addressing how much he and President Obama agree and have worked together which is rather refreshing to hear in an age of party bickering, but I’m not won over yet.  I’m still unsettled by a US Senator who has treated me and my community like we are invisible and my vote is still firmly for Elizabeth Warren

Day trip to NYC

I’m back off to Gotham this morning for a quick day trip to NYC. The purpose is to get training on a tool our firm is piloting that will help me with our SEO strategy (search engine optimization).  Essentially this tool will help me discern how people are searching for subject matter that is important to them so I can ensure our web pages achieve higher rankings and therefore more web traffic. It sounds interesting, but I’ll reserve judgement until after I’ve been trained and have used it.

I wish I could leverage this sort of thing for my blog. I’ve been typing away for the past few years quite content in my own little internet bubble, but it amazes me how little I really know about how to leverage my site. I may have to make a mental note to look into seeing if WordPress or others provide in person training. As my trip to NYC shows, I’m not really one for virtual training – I still like to be there with the trainer and in a class where I can more directly interact.  We’ll see how this goes and if there are any tidbits I can pick up and apply to my own blog; wouldn’t that be nice.

Motley’s new Bear T-shirt

-GRRR-

Motley’s spring collection is out, and I have my eye on an Adidas pullover, but I figured I’d take a wait and see approach to that purchase.  However, I couldn’t pass up this bear t-shirt.  I love the color and fit so I swiped it before the shirts sell out.

I don’t see this particular t-shirt on his website, shopmotley.com but if you call and tell Jason you want the t-shirt BosGuy bought he’ll know exactly which one you are talking about.  BTW – if Jason sounds familiar its because he’s the one I wrote about in my recent post entitled Jason & Randy so be sure to congratulate him if you do chat with him.

James Van Der Beek

“Put your cheeks in a Beek.”

Um, what did he just say? Check out this – dare I say “cheeky” video of James Van Der Beek – promoting his new ABC sitcom.  This is hilarious.

Scored tickets to Red Sox game on Patriot’s Day

The Red Sox start their first home series of the year against Tampa Bay, and I’ve just been invited to join neighbors to the Patriot’s Day game.

For those unfamiliar, Patriot’s Day is one of those unique holidays that Boston and surrounding communities celebrate. It is also the day The Boston Marathon is run.  The entire city comes alive with fans pouring into the city to watch the Red Sox alongside tens of thousands of runners and enthusiasts who pack Boston to cheer on or participate in the oldest (and one of the most difficult) marathons in the world.

I can hardly wait for Patriot’s Day on Monday, April 16th.

Neil Patrick Harris to host 2012 Tony Awards

NPHNeil Patrick Harris has been asked back for a third time to host the 2012 Tony Awards which will take place on Sunday, June 10, at 8 p.m. on CBS.

I’m not a fan of award shows.  For all the hoopla surrounding the Oscars it never ceases to amaze me how horrible A-list actors are when they are required to perform one-take in front of a live audience.   Compare that with the Tony Awards where all the Broadway stars perform in front of a live audience every night and the contrast is astounding.

Neil Patrick Harris has shown he can dance, sing and drop a funny line with the best in Hollywood and Broadway so I’ll definitely be setting my DVR to record this show and so should you.

Happy birthday Mom

My mother is celebrating her birthday today. She is easily one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever met and someone I’ve come to admire and appreciate more with each passing year.

I can’t adequately express how fortunate I feel to have been born into my family.  What a wonderful accomplishment she and my father have achieved, beating all the odds by raising four children all relatively well adjusted, happy and successful in their own endeavors.  Mom you are more amazing and special than you will ever realize. Happy Birthday.

Tweet of the day: Gym

I just started following Zach from Philly. His Twitter profile describes him as skeptical, sleepy and sarcastic.  Here in Boston we’d also add wicked funny, although that may mess with his awesome alliteration.

If you are on Twitter and are looking for someone who can make you laugh with their 140-character wit, check out & follow @itsonlyzach.

April is national poetry month

I love poetry because it can evoke strong feelings. That may sound strange, because I hear people say they don’t “get” poetry. But when I ask these people when was the last time they read poetry they refer back to when they were in class.  Can you imagine what one might think of music if your sole experience was from music class? I’m pretty certain shows like American Idol and The Voice wouldn’t be on television.

Poetry is a lot like music. The trick is finding poets who speak to you.

Poetry inserts art into the form of communicating and can beautifully describe abstracts like love and faith. Poetry can also perfectly capture and describe a moment or feeling with amazing elegance.

I thought I’d share an excerpt from a poem in honor of national poetry month. This poem is appropriately named Boston and is a bit naughty.

I watched two men
press hard into
each other, their bodies
caught in the club’s
bass drum swell,
and I couldn’t remember
when I knew I’d never
be beautiful, but it must
have been quick
and subtle, the way
the holy ghost can pass
in and out of a room.
I want so desperately
to be finished with desire,
the rushing wind, the still
small voice.

If you are intrigued you can read the full poem online or purchase Aaron Smith’s book Blue on Blue Ground.  He even has a rather interesting poem about Brad Pitt.

Mitt Romney supported NOM

Last week I wrote about confidential documents from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) made public in my post here.  These documents detailed a blueprint written by NOM to drive a wedge between gays and blacks with a “divide and conquer” strategy.

NOM has been considered a fringe group from the beginning.  Their rhetoric and techniques have made them notorious and for that reason only the most virulent opponents to same sex marriage have associated themselves with this organization.

Mitt Romney’s support of NOM is shameful

It was both surprising and disappointing to learn last Friday in 2008 Mitt Romney donated $10,000 to NOM. With scores of organizations opposing same sex marriage, Romney could and did financially support many organizations opposing marriage equality.  So why did he feel the need to also provide such a generous donation to NOM? Political posturing? His belief in NOM?  Regardless Mitt Romney’s support of NOM is shameful.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I blog about Twitter profiles which catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. You can find me talking about past Men of Twitter by searching #MenOfTwitter.

For the past month I’ve been featuring couples who are both on Twitter, but this week ends that trend.  The two men featured this week are both in a relationship but not with each other.

GingrSteve – For all those ginger fans out there, this has been a long time coming, but I think you’ll agree Steve is both handsome and worth the follow. This Canadian calls Calgary his home. He lives there with his partner and a puppy named Tucker.  Steve is focused on getting his personal trainer certification and working on his personal fitness; something I can appreciate and admire.  Steve is quite conversational on Twitter so if you follow – don’t be shy and say hello to him.

Justex07 – A.K.A. Justin Scott is originally from Texas but now calls San Francisco home and lives with his boyfriend.  Justin’s job has him travelling so much that he created a blog called itsjustjustin.com.  When this young entrepreneur is not between airport lounges, he is working on his photography which is also featured on the blog mentioned. You’ll enjoy following this Twitter addict and get to live vicariously through him as he tweets about work, wine and life.

Book review: The Dante Club

The Dante Club is a must read for historical fiction and mystery fans. Set in Boston in 1865 its main characters include American literature giants Longfellow, Holmes, and Lowell.  Pearl does an amazing job drawing in the reader, telling a tale about suspicious murders in Boston that have amazing parallels to those depicted in Dante’s Inferno, a book coincidentally being translated into English by these writers for the American public.

Pearl’s novel will ignite your imagination and have you up late reading.  He does a brilliant job of bringing post-civil war Boston to life in this murder mystery that includes some of America’s most celebrated writers of the day.  However, even if you are unfamiliar with these writers / poets you will lose none of the suspense.  Don’t assume Pearl’s writing style and story is too cerebral, this national bestseller will be a page turner for anyone who enjoys a good story and likes mysteries.

You can read more about the book and the local author, Matthew Pearl, who lives in Cambridge, MA on his website, www.matthewpearl.com.

April Fools’ Day

Today is April Fools’ Day.  A day many use as an excuse to play all kinds of jokes and foolishness.  While the day is meant for pranksters and all in good fun, not all jokes are funny and sometimes a Fool really can try one’s patience.

Who is the bigger fool these candidates
or the men and women looking to them to lead our nation?

So I thought I’d share three fools who I’ve lost my patience with and who I no longer laugh or jest about. These three men in particular have successfully moved the political dialog in the United States so far to the right that I no longer can bear the thought of any of them.

These three men have dashed so far to the right that their meaningless debates have been about topics like should birth control be made available, initiating a war with Iran and building colonies on the moon – no joke.  If I had told friends likely to vote Republican in the next election these would be the topics dominating Republican debates I’m fairly certain I could have wagered them all  $100 (or maybe I should’ve bet $10,000 as Romney did to Gov. Perry in one debate).
