What not to buy BosGuy for Christmas

So many people have asked me where they can find this (me thinks this might make the rounds for gag gifts). You can check out the website by linking here. You can actually send a Pee & Poo eCard to friends from the site too #Klassy.

Wham “Last Christmas”

Time to gay up the BosGuy blog to get ready for Christmas and nothing says “gay” quite like Wham.  Enjoy this holiday ditty from George and Andrew.

Try not to laugh too hard at the “straight acting” George Michael who actually has better hair and prettier lips than any of the female models in the video.

Naughty or nice

Tis the season when little girls and boys are reminded on a daily basis that Santa Claus is coming to town.  Parents use the pending visit as ammunition to remind their children that Santa (or more recently the Elf on a shelf) is watching to see who’s naughty and who’s nice.

This got me to thinking, as we get older do you think people are motivated to do the right thing (in other words be “nice”) because someone might see them and they will receive accolades or do you think people are genuinely nice.

Coming from the northeast which does not have the friendliest of reputations, you may be surprised to read that I think most people if given the opportunity will do the right thing.  This doesn’t mean that every one of us have not in the past been a jerk at one time or another, but on the whole I think the “nice list” (if Santa were keeping one) is a lot longer than the “naughty list”.  Its just that we remember those irritating moments a lot more than those nice ones.

What do you think?

Decorations by Martha Stewart

Last night when I was driving through one of Boston’s suburbs we passed this house and I couldn’t resist snapping this photograph.  Clearly someone is excited about Christmas, but with houses separated by only a driveway, I have to wonder if the neighbors share the same enthusiasm or more closely resemble the   character of the giant green Grinch off on the right.

Miracle on 22nd Street

Do you remember this feel good story from last Christmas when hundreds of kids in New York City mistook a gay couple’s apartment as Santa Claus’ home?

Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to embed the NYT video but it is worth the watch if you did not hear about this story from Christmas 2010.  You can watch the very touching video here.

Santa Speedo Run video makes the rounds

Boston’s Santa Speedo Run, which took place this past Saturday is always one of my favorite posts and this year it proved to be a favorite of gay bloggers  as well.  Thank you to Wicked Gay Blog, DanNation, and Back2Stonewall for quickly reposting the video over the weekend.

Last night I found out that Towleroad which had posted my 2010 video gave me a shout out as well and posted the Santa Speedo Run video, causing my humble blog to see its traffic nearly triple in traffic.

Thank you to WGB, DanNation, Back2Stonewall and Towleroad.  If you happen to see other bloggers posting this video, please let me know in the comments section so I may send them a quick thank you.

Toys for Joys (T4J) Party in Boston

This past Saturday was the annual Toys for Joys (a.k.a. T4J) event in Boston. T4J is a non-profit event/organization dedicated to providing toys and gifts for underprivileged children during the holiday season.  It happens to be one of the best holiday parties I attend and this year’s program didn’t disappoint.

It’s hard to say how many men attend this event which is overwhelmingly (although not exclusively) gay, but I would guess close to a thousand guys attend.  The program is either a perfect place to start your evening or as a second stop on what is always a popular night (the 2nd Saturday of December).

There was no way I could collect enough pictures from the event and many of my photographs unfortunately did not come out as I had hoped (mental note, vodka + BosGuy = crappy pictures). However here is a sampling of some of the gracious attendees who paused to pose for me and my trusty companion Sergio.

I have not seen any reports on how many gifts or attendees visited the event this past weekend, but you can learn more about the program by visiting their site, toysforjoys.org.

Boston Santa Speed Run this weekend

The Santa Speedo Run is Saturday, December 10th at 1PM on Boylston Street in the Back Bay. Be sure to enjoy this holiday tradition which started here in Boston back in 2000 and has since spread to cities all over the world.  I’ll be posting photos and tweeting from the event.

The Slutcracker

Are you struggling to get into the holiday spirit? Looking for something a bit different to do?  If you live in the Boston area, check out the Boston classic The Slutcrackera burlesque, satirical version of The Nutcracker.

The production is the brainchild of Babes in Boinkland troupe director Vanessa White. While its not quite what you will see if you attend the Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker, what it lacks in technique I think you will find it more than makes up for in laughs. It may be the best holiday entertainment for the money.

Tickets ($25) are currently on sale and this year’s show which started this past weekend will run through most of December.  More Information

Heads up – the video may not be appropriate to play at your office.

Boxing day celebrations commence

For the past few years, my good friend, Tracey, has hosted a Boxing Day dinner party. Tracey is originally from the U.K. where Boxing Day is an official holiday, and I think celebrating this way makes her feel as if she’s sharing a bit of herself with us.

For me, this annual dinner party hosted by Tracey is an excuse to prolong the Christmas holiday by spending a fun evening with friends that is filled with too much wine, too much food and hilarious conversations.

Although dinner is not typically served until 8pm or 9pm, we will all show by 7ish (although today’s storm, Boston’s first of the season could make hailing cabs dodgey). Wine will be flowing nearly non-stop and games like Twister will start sounding like fun (note: drinking & Twister absolutely do not mix – I say this w/ a voice of authority on such matters). At some point in the evening there is also a Yankee Swap, which can get quite serious, although I never take it so (as my gift each year proves).

Okay… so I admit the last photograph was not from our party, but if you happen to see this guy, would you please get his number and shoot me an email or leave a comment below? He is most certainly welcome to the party.

Jingle jingle

I hope your bells get jingled this Christmas.

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N

My firm closes between the Christmas and New Years holidays, and I am joining most of my colleagues by extending that already lovely break by starting my vacation effective this evening.

For many this is an increasingly chaotic time but not for me. Work slows, allowing me to relax, and in the days leading up to Christmas I will pick up a couple of gifts. On Christmas Eve I will have a few friends over for drinks. The only chaos will be on Christmas morning as my nephews Jack (age 6) and Austin (age 4) rip open presents and run around my parent’s house in ecstasy. On the 26th, I will go to my friend’s house for her annual Boxing Day dinner party. The days after will be spent seeing friends and spending time with family at an equally leisurely pace. I recognize how fortunate I am to have this tradition which prolongs the Christmas celebration and allows me the chance to really disengage.

I’m probably the only person I know who thinks of this as a tranquil time of year. However, I do hope that you too can find some semblance of peace during these next couple of weeks and make the most of the time to connect with family and friends.

Boston Toys for Joys (T4J) Party

The second annual Toys for Joys (T4J) party was tonight in Southie at the Artist for Humanity building. The party was every bit as fun as last year and a bit better run with more bartenders serving very strong drinks and plenty of food although much of it was overlooked as the men (the crowd is 90% gay) fixated on cocktails.

Christmas holiday with friends

Unlike many, I find the Christmas holiday very relaxing.  However, this year I did not know what to expect as we were hosting two houseguests (one of whom we had never met).  As it turned out it was one of the best holidays in recent memory due in part to the wonderful time we had with our houseguests. During their 4-night stay, we hosted our annual Christmas Eve dinner; spent Christmas day at my parent’s in New Hampshire; and joined a great dinner party on the 26th to celebrate Boxing Day. Spread over three evenings – Christmas cheer seemed to be in abundance.  Each night we were up late chatting and laughing at nothing in particular and each morning I enjoyed exploring my hometown with our guests… Why is it I only do this when people visit from out of town?
On Sunday morning, I stood on my curb waving goodbye to Joanna and Alicia as they drove off, and walking back to our apartment both my partner and I were commenting on how sad we were to see them leave only to get a message on our home phone from a friend we had not seen in 3+ years.  She was visiting Boston from Rio de Janeiro and was hoping we were in town so we could connect. Hearing Priscilla’s soft Brasilian accent speaking through the answering machine was like receiving a late Christmas present – completely unexpected and appreciated all the more precisely for that reason.
Sunday turned out to be like an extension of the Christmas holiday and today waking up to go back to work I found myself more relaxed than I had expected (considering how late I’d been up each night) and extremely content.  I’m sure it is natural for people to think back at the close of each year and I’m no exception.  The past few days have made me realize three things which I already knew but perhaps had not thought much about lately.  1) Good friendships are not always easy to come by 2) If you really value them you’ll make the effort to stay in touch 3) Spending a special time of year (like Christmas) with friends really does bring you closer together and make the holiday memorable.

Boxing Day photos

The annual Boxing Day dinner party my friend hosts was fantastic.  This year there were a few more faces and it had a true internationl flair with our additional houseguests Joanna from Australia and Alicia from France joining the party.  I’ve included a photo album from last night’s festivities. If you have speakers, turn them on to enjoy the cheesy holiday music.
