Boston Book Festival this weekend

shirtless guy, man with glasses, reading, bookI believe this weekend will be the 11th Annual Boston Book Festival. This free event centered in Copley Square and the Boston Public Library this Saturday and Sunday is a wonderful program worth checking out. The 2019 BBF will include 350+ presenters, 140+ events at 37 venues and is expected to draw 30k people.

The Boston Book Festival celebrates the power of words to stimulate, agitate, unite, delight, and inspire by holding year-round events culminating in an annual, Festival that promotes a culture of reading, ideas and enhances the vibrancy of our city.

The variety of events, topics and discussions are meant to ensure there is something for everyone. If you’re an aspiring (or possibly frustrated) writer, there are many sessions set up all weekend long as well (check’em out here). One program I’m contemplating attending is Saturday’s Poetry & Pints.

This year’s full schedule can be viewed here: BBF Schedule.

Different From The Others presented by Provincetown Film Society

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the earliest surviving film depicting LGBT people, The Provincetown Film Society presents two very special screenings of the recently restored Different From The OthersThe German film dates back to the Weimar Republic in 1919 and was created in response to the then-current laws under Germany, that made homosexuality a criminal offense. It is believed to be the first pro-gay film in the world.

Want to see this historic film? You have two opportunities to buy tickets. Select the links below for more information about the screenings and to get tickets.

Ptown Showing: Provincetown Theater on October 24
Boston Showing: Strand Theater/Dorchester on December 5

Different From The Others tells a compelling story of secrecy and oppression that continues to play out in the world today. The film is about a violinist whose romance with a talented male student is thwarted when a blackmailer threatens to expose their relationship.

Proceeds raised from these showings will go to benefit the Ptown Flim Society and Trevor Project.

Vintage gay

Leonard Matlovich

This week’s post deviates from many past posts that typically show couples but Technical Seargeant Leonard Philip Matlovich who was a Vietnam War veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star is recognized as the first gay service member to purposely out himself to the military to fight their ban on gays. His case resulted in articles in newspapers and magazines throughout the country, numerous television interviews, and a television movie on NBC. His photograph appeared on the cover of the September 8, 1975, issue of Time magazine, making him a symbol for thousands of gay and lesbian service members and gay people generally.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
