Summer reading

With the July 4th holiday around the corner and beach weather in the forecast, you may be looking for some quality summer reading materials. As in past years, I wanted to share a few books for you to consider. While all these books are available via sites like Amazon.com, consider purchasing one or more of these books from your local LGBT bookstore (if you still have one).

LGBTQ history, gay literature, gay non fictionThis book is most likely going to appeal to those who reside or hail from New England. Published earlier this year by Shawmut Peninsula Press, The Hub of the Gay Universe: An LGBTQ History of Boston, Provincetown and Beyond, was written by my friend and neighbor, Russ Lopez. The 300+ page soft cover starts in the early 1600 when Pilgrims landed first in Provincetown and soon after in Plymouth and concludes with the progress the LGBTQ community has made in present day. Lopez beautifully captures moments in history and shares story after story about pioneers – many of whom you’ve never heard because American queer history is virtually unknown and barely taught.

fiction, gay fiction, greek mythologyFor those looking for an escape from reality, I definitely suggest Madeline Miller’s NYT Bestselling novel, The Song of Achilles, which chronicles the story of Achilles – the son of Thetis the cruel sea goddess and Kink Peleus who is doomed to die on the battlefield and destined to be Ancient Greece’s greatest hero. Miller doesn’t shy from the companionship and love between the hero and Patroclus, an unassuming exile who is made famous in Greek mythology because Achilles names him Therapon, ‘brother-in-arms’. Miller’s talent cannot be denied. I promise you will find yourself turning page after page, staying up late to finish the novel.

gay fictionHaving recommended a new nonfiction book on LGBTQ history followed by an historical fiction novel of sorts it seems only fitting to conclude with the gay classic, Tales of the City.  I can vividly remember watching in secret the TV series in the early 1990s up in my parent’s bedroom. And later buying the books in an out-of-the-way bookstore so I wouldn’t run into anyone I knew. If you’ve never read the series or if it has been a few years, add this to your summer reading list. The novel captures a time that no longer exists and as the NY Times review says, reads like “an extended love letter to a magical San Francisco”.

If you have a book that you’d like to suggest, please leave the title and author in the comments section of this post. And as I mentioned previously, while all these books are available via sites like Amazon.com, consider purchasing one or more of these books from your local LGBT bookstore (if you still have one).

Straight Pride: Media spectacle only if you allow it

Channeling your anger at this group is what they want.

During Boston Pride Week, news of a different sort of Pride captured headlines around the country and world when three men said they would host the first “Straight Pride” in Boston this August. Initially, the band of three designated Hollywood star, Brad Pitt, as their mascot until they received a cease-and-desist order from Pitt’s attorney. Days later the surreal spectacle took an unexpected turn when they named the much loathed (and gay) Milo Yiannopoulos as their new mascot and parade marshal.

When pressed why they felt the need to host the parade now and here in Boston, organizers said they need “advocates on behalf of the straight community in order to foster respect and awareness with people from all walks of life”. I’m unsure what that means. Last I recall, nobody heterosexual was denied the right to marry, denied access to a dying loved one at a hospital, been thrown out of their home as a teenager for their  sexual orientation, subjected to ‘conversion therapy’, denied housing or jobs, etc…

I can’t help but think this was a media stunt meant to take away from Boston Pride -consider the timing days before the Boston’s Gay Pride Parade. As of 6/25 organizers had only raised $764.00 – well shy of an easy $5,000 goal.  Who can say what their real intentions are and if a parade will occur? No doubt if it does, it will be quite a spectacle, but I would like to propose everyone ignore them. Channeling your anger at this group is what they want. The reality is they don’t deserve the attention or media so don’t give them a reason to get it.

UPDATE: 6/26 The city of Boston approved application for straight pride

The photo above is of Eric Marcoux and Eugene Woodworth who first met in Chicago in 1953. Woodworth was a ballet dancer, and Marcoux was just leaving a Trappist monastery. The couple is probably best known for Woodworth marrying his longtime companion after he had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and given only weeks to live. At the time Oregon didn’t recognize same sex marriages so they married in Washington at Clark County Courthouse.

I dedicate this weekly post to men like Eric and Eugene. Do you have a photograph you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Shakespeare on the Common presents Cymbeline

Commonwealth Shakespeare CompanyThe Commonwealth Shakespeare Company will return in less than a month with their annual production of a William Shakespeare play on the Boston Common. This year’s production of Cymbeline will start in approximately three weeks opening on Wednesday, July 17th and running through Sunday, August 4th with performances taking place Tuesday–Saturday at 8PM, Sundays at 7PM with the exception of hosting  a 3PM matinee on Saturday, August 3rd.

Free Shakespeare on the CommonPerformances are Tuesday – Saturday at 8PM & Sundays at 7PM

About Cymbeline: Shakespeare’s mystical dramedy Cymbeline chronicles the fates of King Cymbeline and his family through a journey of deception, intrigue and separation. The king’s daughter Imogen (one of Shakespeare’s most beloved heroines) is swept into a nearly mythic realm of mistaken identities, twists and turns in the all-consuming quest for true love. According to Wikipedia, the play deals with the themes of innocence and jealousy. While the precise date of composition remains unknown, the play was certainly produced as early as 1611. You can read more about the play and this year’s production here.
