Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Day and while I will be working, the holiday is observed by many companies and organizations here in Boston. There are lots of events taking place in and around Boston paying tribute to King’s legacy. In honor of King, two of my favorite museums are open and free to the public.

Should you have the day off stop by and check out either the Isabella Stewart Gardner or the Museum of Fine Arts on Monday.

Bullfinch Crossing development by Gov’t Center

The HYM Investment Group, Government Center Garage Redevelopment, Boston RealestateThe demolition of the hideous Government Center garage is underway according to the website bldup.com. Replacing the ugly garage will be “Bulfinch Crossing”, (referred by many as Government Center Garage Redevelopment). The massive project that totals 2.9 million square feet will include a pedestrian-friendly streetscape, plaza and six mixed-use buildings on two blocks spanning 4.8 acres. The development is sandwiched between Government Center, The North End, Beacon Hill and The West End.

When fully built, there will be 800+ housing units, 200 hotel rooms, 1.15 million gross square feet of office space and 82,500 gross square feet of retail space at Bulfinch Crossing. The reconfigured garage will contain approximately 1,100 parking spaces which is significantly less than the original garage held but the transformation will hopefully be worth it.

U2 Joshua Tree tour coming to Boston June 25

u2-joshua-tree-tourPerhaps you didn’t hear but earlier this week the rock band U2 announced that they would go on a 25 city stadium tour around the world in honor of the 30th anniversary of their Joshua Tree album which sold more than 25 million records and went on to win a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1987.

The band will perform the album in its entirety each night. Speaking to the media, U2 guitarist, The Edge, said, “It seems like we have come full circle from when ‘The Joshua Tree’ songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right-wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album – we decided to do these shows; it feels right for now.”

U2 will come to Boston for one night on Sunday, June 25th. You can find more information about tickets which go on sale this Monday here.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, shirtless manEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: There was a train crash. Every single person died. Two people survived. Why don’t these two statements contradict each other?

Like riddles? Check out past week’s brain teasers.

Check out SpeakEasy Stage production of Hand to God

bosarts, boston theater

The reviews are in for The SpeakEasy Stage production of the Tony nominated play Hand To God, and everyone (including me) loves it, but don’t take my word for it, The Boston Globe describes the show as “Good Nasty Fun!” and WBUR says it is “Flat-out hilarious”.

Described as “Sesame Street meets The Exorcist” by the New Yorker, the play tells the story of an awkward Texas teen named Jason, who spends afternoons practicing for the Christian Puppet Ministry run by his widowed mother. When Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality things take a much darker turn. This is unlike any play I can recall seeing with shocking scenes that will leave you laughing out loud one minute and the next recoiling. Hand puppets have never been so devilishly entertaining.

Get tickets to see Hand To God while they last. The two hour show with one intermission opened earlier this month and runs through Saturday, Febraury 4th at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End.

Skiing has never been more gay

how to survive a Boston winterIn years past I’ve written posts for newcomers to Boston who may not be familiar with New England winters. One of my suggestions is to try and learn to embrace what winter offers.  Never has that been more fun with gay ski weekends and weeks here locally and out West to tempt you.

Below are a few such events you may want to consider. The price of tickets out West varies widely by destination and carrier but you can use a locally developed app called Hopper to alert you to last minute airfares and price reductions.
