Cascais and Sintra: Fun day trips from Lisbon

If you have the opportunity to visit Libson, it makes sense to take a few day trips if time permits and after a lot of discussion Sergio and I spent time visiting Cascais and Sintra. The two locations could not be more different but both were easily accessible by the Lisbon metro (30-40 minute rides) that cost about 5 €.

Praia da Rainha – Cascais, Portugal

Cascais is a coastal town about 20 miles west of Lisbon that became a favorite destination of Portugal’s royal family in the late 1800s but is now an affluent suburb of Lisbon that is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and tourists. We spent our time walking through the small town and along the running / bike paths that hug the coastline and extend out from the town.PortugalCascais, PortugalCascais, Portugal

Sintra is another beautiful day trip from Lisbon probably best known for its many 19th-century romantic architectural monuments. We spent a day here when the temperature in Lisbon was close to 100°. Fortunately Sintra’s microclimate meant that we enjoyed a breeze and temperatures in the low to mid 80s, which was important because visiting Sintra = a leg workout. Sintra, PortugalSintra, PortugalSintra, Portugal

Word of the day: Catcher

baseball, gay slangCatcher (\ˈka-chər, ˈke-\noun
Definition: The passive partner in anal intercourse.
Example: For a while it seemed like people preferred the baseball metaphors to describe their sexual preferences; like referring to oneself as a catcher.

Worst Photo Bomb EVER!

Porto, Portugal

Porto, Portugal, travelAfter clearing customs in Lisbon we immediately flew up to Porto, Portugal which is an easy 45-minute flight north.  We were lucky enough to befriend a local who was returning home and waiting for the same flight. His warm hospitality was an unexpected welcome to Portugal and he proved to be a wonderful tour guide for his hometown of Porto.

Porto, PortugalI had initially hesitated at the thought of visiting Porto, thinking it would be smarter to stay based in Lisbon and use the extra time to explore the capital or take more day trips, but I’m really glad I was persuaded to make the trip.

Porto is Portugal’s second largest city but it is easy to navigate and see in just a couple days. In addition to being incredibly picturesque, the city had a great vibe with some delicious restaurants like Flow and perhaps our favorite place was the outdoor bar, Base, which is located in Praca dos Clérigos also referred to as the Jardim das Oliveiras – Garden of Olives (shown in photograph below).

Fran’s Place in Lynn to close

frans-place-bostonNECN reported that Fran’s Place, in Lynn, MA will close one week from today on Monday, September 26. The business has been in owner Jay Collins’ family since the 1920s, when it opened as a tavern at another location before moving to the current location as Lighthouse Cafe in the 1940s and ultimately Fran’s Place in the ’70s.

The sale of the property will likely be completed by the end of the month.  A goodbye party is scheduled for this Saturday. For more information check out their event page on facebook.

Saudade de Portugal

Sergio and Rob, gay travel, flying, travelEarlier this month Sergio and I visited Portugal for the first (but not our last) time. The combination of a strong US dollar and the relative affordability of Portugal meant that we were able to enjoy the vacation for much less than travel to other parts of Europe.  However, it wasn’t the fact that the country was so affordable that made the both of us fall in love with the country.

We found the Portuguese to be extremely friendly, the food & wine delicious and the sites breathtakingly romantic. On our whirlwind trip we flew into Lisbon then connected on a flight to Porto in the north of Portugal. After spending a few days there we took the train to Lisbon where we explored Portugal’s capital and took day trips to Sintra and Cascais.  Below are a few photos from our trip.

Portugal, Sergio, Porto, travel, Base, ClerigosSergio is relaxing in an over sized bathtub at an outdoor bar called Base which was where we spent a bit of time each day enjoying the wine and views of the city. In the background is the tower for La iglesia de los Clérigos a Baroque style church and tower from which point you can see all of Porto.

Portugal, travel, SintraAn easy day trip from Lisbon is Sintra, a town that is best known for its 19th century romantic architectural monuments like the Pena Palace which resides atop a very steep hill and is a leg work out but worth every step.

Cascais, PortgugalAlso an easy day trip from Lisbon is the affluent beach town Cascais. The town is known for its beaches, shopping and restaurants but we liked the dramatic coastline that became apparent if you took a short walk outside of the downtown area like this photo of Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth).

Lisbon, Lisboa, Portugal, travel, EuropeThe time we spent in Lisbon passed too quickly. The capital city is both gritty and graceful with monuments and squares that remind travelers of the country’s proud past. The seven hills Lisbon was built upon are filled with ancient streets, breathtaking vistas and a vibe that is uniquely Lisbon and proudly Portuguese.

The Pass starring Russell Tovey

LGBT filmFor all you Russell Tovey fans who miss seeing him on HBO’s Looking there is a new movie coming out where he plays a closeted gay footballer (that’s soccer for all of us here in the States). The film, The Passs, co-stars the very handsome Arinzé Kene.

The film takes on the story of a closeted player in three segments, one taking place every five years in the player’s life, as he grows from a teenager to an athlete  in the Champions League. Check out the new movie trailer.

I hope Boston’s gay film festival a.k.a., Wicked Queer Film Festival, March 30 – April 9, will include this in their line up.

Happy Birthday Boston

Fourth of July

This weekend Boston celebrated its 386th birthday, making it one of the oldest cities in the United States. Although Boston is not a large city (it is the 23rd largest city in the US), it is one of the largest metropolitan areas with just under 5 million and is the 4th most densely populated after New York Metro Area, Greater Los Angeles and South Florida Metro Area (according to worldpopulationreview.com).

Here are a few interesting facts about present day Boston.
Boston (and Massachusetts) growth is coming mostly from immigrants and without those immigrants the state’s population would have actually declined over the past decade. Almost 1/3 of Boston’s population is now foreign born.

Boston’s population is also growing younger, as nearly 1/3 of all residents are 20-34, which is younger than most other major cities in the country.

Boston’s population growth rate of 3.1% is expected to continue through at least 2020, reaching around 780,000 to 790,000 by the next Census in 2020.

For a city of nearly 400 years it still is young at heart. Happy birthday Boston.

345 Harrison Avenue in the South End

345-harrison-avenueIf you’ve been to either the South End Open Market or Ink Block lately you will notice a lot of activity on the city block across from both at 345 Harrison Avenue. Construction for this fourteen story, nearly 600-unit apartment complex has started in earnest, and the multi-building residential project will add 535,900 square feet of new space that will include approximately 40,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

According to a website set up to promote 345 Harrison Avenue, resident amenities will include a 14th floor Sky Lounge, a resort-style pool and a fully-equipped fitness center. A one-story underground parking garage containing approximately 275 automobile spaces and 325 bicycle spaces.

According to the BRA construction is expected to conclude in late 2018.
