I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post? Boston joins cities all over the world to celebrate the life, memory and music of Freddie Mercury with “Freddie For A Day”. In addition to celebrating Mercury’s music contributions the evening brings people together to help raise awareness and funds for the Mercury Phoenix Trust – fighting AIDS worldwide.

Boston’s “Freddie For A Day” celebration takes place at the Oberon Theater on Wednesday night. Three local bands will pay tribute to and perform Queen songs while a silk aerialist dressed as Freddie Mercury performs overhead.

A raffle and costume contest will also be held so come down to The Oberon in Cambridge and enjoy an evening of great music. Tickets on sale now through OBERON for $20 and limited half priced tickets on sale through Bostix.

Ben Cohen hanging in Ptown (and coming to Boston)

Ptown, ProvincetownMarc Croteau posted this happy photo of he and Chris Salgardo posing with straight ally and former professional rugby player, Ben Cohen in Provincetown on Sunday. It turns out Cohen was in Ptown this past weekend for the #LifeRide7 and they met him at The Boatslip.

If you missed Ben Cohen in Provincetown, you can still meet the handsome hunk at Kiehls Boston on Newbury Street this Wednesday from 11-12. He will be there to help raise awareness and money for amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research).

Lisbon’s gay beaches

gay beaches of Portugal, Praia de Bela Vista, gay PortugalIn just a few weeks Sergio and I will pack up for a very quick trip to Portugal (our first time there). Provided that the weather is nice, I’d like to spend a day at a gay-friendly beach to soak up some Portuguese sun.  There seem to be two options recommended for gay travelers.

Have you been before? Which beach should we visit?

Costa da Caparica is described as a popular beach near Lisbon. From what I have read on the web if we go here we should head to the southern portion of the beach which is described as “trendier and less crowded” — which I take as  gay code for better looking people and no children.  It sounds like this is also more active in the afternoon and one website suggested we enjoy cocktails and the nightlife the village has to offer.

Beach 19 is the other option, located at the south end of Praia de Bela Vista. This is a clothing optional beach which isn’t exactly a draw for me but it isn’t something that would deter me from going either. However, the reviews for this beach which I believe is a bit further away from Libson appear mixed.

I’m curious if any of my readers have been to either beach and if you have a suggestion on which we should try? I wish we were in Portugal longer so we could actually visit both but on this trip that won’t be possibly.

He would not stay for me, and who can wonder

handsome, saudade, alone, soloI love poetry and The Closet Professor is a southern blogger who now resides in Vermont who regularly shares poems like the one below.

I had never heard of  A.E. Housman but according to his Wikipedia page, he was a celebrated poet (and much to my surprise) apparently fell in love with a long time friend / roommate but unfortunately the feelings were never reciprocated as Moses Jackson was heterosexual. Makes you wonder if Housman had Jackson in mind when he wrote this brief but beautiful poem.

He would not stay for me, and who can wonder
A. E. Housman, 1859 – 1936
He would not stay for me, and who can wonder?
He would not stay for me to stand and gaze.
I shook his hand, and tore my heart in sunder,
And went with half my life about my ways.

If you like what you read, check out The Closet Professor blog, but beware it is not safe to read while at work.

Versace Dylan Blue campaign by Bruce Weber

Versace by Bruce Weber

Bruce Weber has created a sexually charged video for Versace’s Dylan Blue Pour Homme like only he can. The campaign, stars Gigi Hadid and Trevor Signorino. Gigi is joined by six male models wrestling, fight club style, as well as a same sex kiss or two, using the ‘mean streets’ of NYC as a backdrop.

Weber also shows off Trevor (shown above) selling ice cream on the beach of the Jersey Shore. Watching the film I could hear Cazwell’s club hit Meet Me At The Ice Cream Truck.  Like what you see? Look for more to come because word is that Bruce Weber has also shot the Autumn Winter campaign for Dylan Blue.
