Ways to fend off Boston’s winter chill

Did you know the average temperature in January in Boston is approximately 29 degrees Fahrenheit?  If time, money or work have conspired to make it impossible to escape Boston’s brutal winters, I have a few more affordable options on ways you can warm up.  I plan on checking out one or more of these options this year and below I encourage you to leave additional suggestions in the comments section for other readers.

Hot tubInman Oasis at 243 Hampshire Street in Cambridge is a great option.  Warm up in their Japanese-style 2-person hot tub. At $65 for 60-minutes this seems like a fantastic and affordable option.  For more information, visit their website at www.inmanoasis.com.

Dillons Russian Steam BathDillon’s Russian Steam Bath in Chelsea at 77 Chestnut Street has been providing Russian Steam Baths to the Boston community for more than 120 years; making it the oldest steam bath house in the United States.

Tuesday – Sunday Dillons is open for men ONLY. Monday is reserved for the ladies. Admission is very affordable – $23, but for more information visit their website, www.dillonsrussiansteambath.com.

Boston Bikram YogaBikram Yoga Boston allows you to stretch and get more physically fit in their heated studios.  Classes at Boston’s only certified Bikram Yoga schools run 90-minutes and will leave you feeling warmed to your core and start at $22 for a single class. Spot (the gays in Sao Paulo)

Dining Sao PauloAlthough on our most recent visit we didn’t have a chance to go to Spot, I thought I should write about this restaurant and bar since it is a favorite.  You will find more than a few handsome men at this gay friendly restaurant conveniently located just a block off of Paulista Avenue near MASP.

The first time I visited Spot was probably ten years ago.  We arrived at 11PM on a Friday night and asked for a table for four.  The handsome host smiled and said the wait was 2 hours, but encouraged us to order drinks from the bar and enjoy the outdoor patio while we waited.  We didn’t take him seriously until he came to seat us for dinner at 1 AM (at which point there was only a 30 minute wait).

Dining in Sao PauloWhile the food is good it is the people watching that makes this a great place to either nab a cocktail or have dinner with friends.  Main dishes at Spot run from $30 – $50 Reis (with the current US exchange rate of 2.5 that equates to $15-$20).

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

The 4 Promises: It is the start of the New Year and while the gyms may be overflowing with those who have made resolutions I want to encourage you to consider making these four promises:

  1. I will spend at least 4 hours in the gym every week.
  2. I will eat whole foods and have only ONE cheat day a week.
  3. I will drink 8 cups of water a day.
  4. I will get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

Print this off and post it at your desk, on your refrigerator and set it up as a daily reminder on your phone or work calendar so you are reminded of these promises. Better yet, have your significant other or good friend join you so you can encourage each other and best of luck to you this year.

Monday blues

Monday Blues chased awayFor many people today is the first day back at work in several days.  But now that the holidays are over, it is back to the grind.  I thought this might help make your Monday morning a bit easier.  Happy Monday – if there is such a thing.

Hotel Unique and SKYE Bar in Sao Paulo

Unique Hotel Sao PauloI always enjoy spending a few days in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but if you don’t know where to go it can seem like a massive concrete jungle that is tough to navigate. Fortunately that isn’t a problem for me since I’ve been several times and have good friends who are Paulistas.

Cocktails in Sao Paulo taste sweeter from atop the SKYE bar.

On our recent visit to Sao Paulo we met friends for cocktails at the SKYE Bar atop Sao Paulo’s Unique Hotel.  Located near Ibirapuera Park, the roofdeck bar offers some pretty spectacular views of the city’s skyline (see above).

Hotel Unique Sao PauloWhen you drive up to Unique Hotel you realize the name is accurate – regardless of what you make of the architecture – which I loved by the way.  Our taxi driver referred to it as “melancia” (watermelon), which made me laugh.  The bar is sleek and designed to impress from the minute you enter through the marble hallway and walk through the dining room.  Red lights reflect off the lap pool that runs the length of the deck beside comfortable furniture that is available on a first come first serve basis. Hotel UniqueIf for some reason, the weather is not cooperating but you would like to visit the hotel, they have an impressive second option in the hotel lobby on the ground level worth checking out. You can grab a seat at their large bar or sit down in their library which has plush red seats and can be seen in the image below to the right.

Sao Paulo Regardless of the weather, this is a great place I would recommend for cocktails.

South End rumor: Caffe Nero coming to Tremont Street

Peets Coffee South EndIt took me more than eight months to circle back, but my post from this past spring, South End rumor: Caffe Nerofinally seems to be for real despite the lack of activity in the space formerly occupied by Francesca’s Cafe.

This weekend The Union Park Neighborhood Association distributed an agenda for their General Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 13th and at the top of their meeting agenda is time to discuss “Overview of plans for Caffe Nero, new tenant for space previously occupied by Francesca’s“.

Coffee shopThere are no details regarding what those plans are that will be reviewed at the neighborhood association meeting. Hopefully this signifies that work will commence shortly so the space won’t remain vacant for much longer.

As I had mentioned in previous posts, the drastic increase in rent probably meant this space would require the deep pockets of a national (or in this case international) chain.  I’d prefer to see a proliferation of independent coffee houses, but I’m sure that most people are happy to see that this will not be another bank, real estate or mortgage office.

Saturday night video: Trick

This movie was released in 1999 and remains one of the funniest gay-themed movies I can recall watching.  Millennials will be horrified to realize this takes place at a time that predates apps and when most still did not have a cell phone.

Boston is wicked expensive

boston real estate, luxury apartments, zumperWhile I’m lucky to have a home I love and can afford, I realize that isn’t the case for everyone living in Boston.  A lack of affordable housing / rentals is a problem the city continues to grapple with despite Mayor Walsh’s statement this past October that he wants 53,000 new housing units built in the next 15 years.

To afford Boston’s median rent you need to make $100k

In December I posted the image above from Zumper.com which found that rents in Boston are for the most part increasing. This makes the findings from Zillow.com all the more important because it suggests a year from now one might need to make even more money; outpacing cost of living increases and making Boston less desirable.

According to Zillow.com, a single person needs to earn $50 / hour or $100k a year to afford median rent, that is just shy of $2,500 a month, and the problem isn’t limited to just Boston.  It is a regional issue and perhaps needs a more collaborative approach, involving mayors from surrounding communities.  Zillow.com points out that even traditionally affordable cities like Chelsea have sky-high rent as compared to resident income with median rents now more than $2,100 / month.

When will MA legalize marijuana

potAccording to an article in The Boston Globe last month, a local group called Bay State Repeal is organizing and collecting signatures for a ballot question in 2016 that, if passed, would legalize and regulate recreational marijuana in Massachusetts. A more powerful national group, Marijuana Policy Project, also organized a referendum committee, which is considered a first step in a process that is less than two years away.

Polls indicate that Massachusetts supports such legislation with ballot initiatives in 2008 and again in 2012 approved by 63% of voters.  I understand and have heard the arguments against legalizing marijuana, but I still would rather have it regulated and sold legally.  What do you think of such an initiative if it is brought to a vote?
