Manchin-Toomey Background Check DealOn Wednesday, April 17th the following US Senators voted against the will of nearly 90% of Americans who want their fellow citizens to undergo a background check before purchasing a firearm.

Gay spouse forcibly removed from Kansas City MO hospital

Roger-Gorley-and-AllenLast Tuesday the improper arrest of Roger Gorley from Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo was discussed on nearly every blog I read.  For those who may have missed this story, Roger was forcibly removed and taken away in handcuffs because he would not leave the hospital bed where his partner (Allen) was resting when Allen’s brother told a nurse he didn’t want Roger at the hospital.  The truly troubling part to this story, that chills me to the bone, is Allen had previously indicated he wanted Roger there.  According to reports the nurse didn’t confirm the couple shared power of attorney and made medical decision for each other before calling the police.

For those who rightfully so feel optimistic with the result of recent elections to recognize same sex marriage and the attention received from the US Supreme Court arguments in the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 in CA, take heed that we’d be better to press our advantage and seek to build our momentum  than become complacent. What happened to Roger and Allen could just as easily happen to anyone of us – and you’re fooling yourself if you think otherwise.  You can read more about this horrifying story on AmericaBlog.

Parking ban and street closures ahead of Obama’s visit

cathedral-of-the-holy-cross-bostonIf you live in the South End near the Cathedral of the Holy Cross (like yours truly) plan to move your car.

Due to the President’s visit to Boston on Thursday, April 18th to attend the prayer service at the Holy Cross Cathedral, no parking will be allowed on Washington Street, Harrison Avenue, and all the cross streets between Shawmut and Albany Streets. Traffic will be completely shut down between 9 am and 2 pm.  The Secret Service said they could not provide any further information if the service at the Cathedral would be open to the public or if you will need a special permit to attend.  Final plans are still being made.

Beowulf at the OBERON Theater

BeowulfThe OBERON Theater has been temporarily transformed into a 21st century mead hall so they may share their version of the Old English epic poem, Beowulf. For more information about this new show which opened on Tuesday and runs for the next three weeks, check out the video about the program.

Sergio has landed

Sergio and RobAfter spending the past two weeks in Brazil, Sergio returned home Marathon Monday.  He had a hectic two weeks helping his Mom care for his father and he’ll likely need to head back before long, but for now  I’m glad to have him back home – especially in light of how horrible Marathon Monday turned out.

Boston buskers: Rhett Price and Josh Knowles

Two former Berkelee College of Music students, Rhett Price and Josh Knowles, have made a full time job out of playing contemporary music on their violins for MBTA riders. Explaining homosexuality is only difficult if you have difficulty with someone being gay. So deal with it because I’m not going anywhere, and I’m definitely not going to let you perpetuate your demeaning stereotypes no matter how much you rap your homophobic opinions in faith.

Boston Back Bay photoAlthough I’m still saddened by the senseless nature of Monday’s tragedy, it is a new day and I have to place my faith in the work our government will do to trace who did this and hope for the best for those injured.

This photo of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood was circulating on Twitter on Monday, and while I don’t intend to forget what happened, I’d like to start to focus on the beauty of my home rather than the horror of those memories.

Boston Marathon Ambulances 2I’m writing a quick post to thank everyone who has reached out to check in on me and to let you know while I’m safe, I’m also incredibly angry at this attack and want to express my thanks to Boston’s first responders.  I was approximately two blocks from the Boston Marathon finish line when the first explosion took place and was blissfully unaware (initially).

In a matter of minutes, scores of ambulances, fire trucks, police and special forces had shut down the entire area and where I was (Huntington Avenue) was closed in both directions to ensure victims could be swiftly picked up and ushered to hospitals.

Thoughts and prayers for all impacted and hope this is where the story ends.

Best gay beaches

Praia Mole FlorianopolisQueerty recently posted The World’s 10 Best Gay Beaches. While I don’t take these sort of lists seriously, I do find them entertaining and I’m assuming you do too. Interestingly, I’ve only been to four of the ten named beaches which span the globe.  Which of these beaches have you been to?

Ipanema Beach (Rio de Janeiro) – Brazil*
Fire Island (NY) – USA
Gran Canaria – Spain
North Bondi Beach (Sydney) – Australia*
Sebastian Beach (Fort Lauderdale FL) – USA*
Elia Beach Mykonos – Greece
Herring Cove (Provincetown MA) – USA*
Hilton Beach (Tel Aviv) – Israel
Manuel Anotonio Beach – Costa Rica
Clifton 3rd (Capetown) – South Africa

I’ve been to the beaches asterisked, and although some are nicer than others, I’ve enjoyed all of them.  I’m surprised San Francisco’s clothing optional Baker Beach didn’t make the list. What beaches would you add to this list?

I’d add Praia Mole in Florianopolis as an amazing gay beach worth checking out.  It also happens to be the beach in the photo at the top of this post.
