Milken Institute ranks Massachusetts tops (again)

massachusettsIt is time to report about something positive rather than the horrors associated with the Boston Marathon so I am happy to share this story about Massachusetts.

While my home state doesn’t have internationally recognizable towns like Beverly Hills or addresses like Fifth Avenue, Massachusetts is an affluent state.   Much of this wealth is derived from the state’s investment in industries like technology that pay wages far higher than the average income.  So while some may be surprised to read that Massachusetts achieved the top spot (again) on an index ranking states by their technology and science capabilities compiled the Milken Institute I’m not.

The Milken Institute is a California-based think tank that evaluates R&D investment, risk capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure, and the skill of a local work force to  draw up its rankings.  Their calculations measure a state’s success at converting those assets into businesses and high-paying jobs.  So while Silicon Valley in California deserves its role as top dog as America’s technology epicenter, the Massachusetts juggernaut continues to pay dividends that lift a rising tide for many in my state and I’m kind of proud of that.

Those investments didn’t happen by accident, and I hope Massachusetts continues to make those investments so we can maintain this leadership, because while we’ll never be Hollywood or Fifth Avenue, I like the fact that an opportunity for a better life and access to higher paying careers are more readily available here than just about anywhere else in the US.

Thank you

Boston PoliceTo be frank, it has been a crappy week. I hadn’t realized how trying it had been until just a few minutes ago when it was reported that nineteen year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured.

All of Boston’s first responders have been exemplary and I just wanted to say thank you.  Thank you to the B.P.D. and to everyone who helped.   I am very much looking forward to referring to this entire incident in the past tense.

Ryan Lochte mocked after interview

ryan-lochteI won’t lie, Olympic Gold Medalist Ryan Lochte is very easy on the eyes, but it seems that he never seems to come off as particularly intelligent.  This video clip from earlier this week has Fox News anchors laughing hysterically after doing a satellite interview about Ryan Lochte’s forthcoming reality show. It is worth the watch.

I love it when the female news anchor snorts and says “No more! Otherwise my eyelashes will fall off.

Check out the video below and enjoy.

Flashback Friday

Flashback FridayTomorrow, April 20th is Fenway Park’s 103rd birthday.  The fact it is still here is a testament to the city of Boston and Red Sox fans everywhere who have been coming to games at Fenway Park for generations.

Fenway Park is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium still in use, but it looks great thanks in part to continued improvements. I wish more professional sports teams and the cities who host those teams would learn from the lesson Fenway has taught us here in Boston; traditions matter and can help carry you through tough seasons if only because Sox fans the world over consider Fenway Park their home.  And as the saying goes, “home is where the heart is.”

Dick of the Year

Dick of the WeekEvery so often I include a post entitled, Dick of the Week, but today’s Tweet from Arkansas State House Representative, Nate Bell, takes the cake and I’ve decided to make an exception and refer to him as Dick of the Year.  If you’d like to express your disdain for Mr. Bell you may reach him the following ways.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and try to figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: What is round on the ends and high in the middle?

Exxon energy everywhere humorous video

Mayflower Oil SpillEarlier this month 19,000 barrels were spilled in what the residents are calling the “worst spill in Arkansas history.”  Exxon, disputes the amount and has been working hard to intimidate media and limit coverage of this oil spill that has devastated a suburban neighborhood outside of Little Rock, AR.  Check out this humorous video called Exxon – Energy Everywhere. I think it will give you a good chuckle.

Something to think about if you hear Republicans insist that the Keystone Pipeline is safe and would never pose a threat to the communities it would run through.

Gaslight rolls out new brunch menu

GaslightLast week I sat down with the Chef de Cuisine at Gaslight Brasserie du Coin in Boston’s South End to talk about the new brunch menu the restaurant rolled out last month. “Gaslight” as locals refer to it is one of the largest restaurants in the neighborhood consistently serving 350+ people on Saturday and 500+ on Sunday for brunch.  With the patio soon to open and this new brunch menu offering some welcome additions those numbers are likely to creep higher. For those who enjoy the menu, fear not much remains the same, but several plates have been tweaked and new temptations await if you’re looking for something new.

One of the restaurant’s best selling items that was tweaked is the Steak and Eggs $15.75 and it is absolutely delicious.  Served alongside potatoes that are cooked in duck fat then fried the steak is topped with caramelized onions and comes with a meurette sauce that is made with “lots of red wine” (that’s Chef’s Zentner’s words not mine and I’m 100% okay with that), garlic, onions and bacon.

Gaslight has also added a savory crepe to the brunch menu Crepes Parisienne that includes smoked ham, compte cheese, sunny up egg & mornay sauce for $9.50.  I love crepes but never ordered the banana crepes, because I crave something more salty in the morning.

However, my favorite addition to the menu and one of the best selling items has been the Berkshire Pork Hache $14.75.  The hand mixed bread, potatoes and pork are fried with a bit of Louisiana crystal hot sauce (not to worry this isn’t going to set your mouth afire) and served with an egg on top.  I highly recommend with a Bloody Mary from the bar.

If you haven’t been to Gaslight for brunch in a while you may want to put this on your list of locations to try soon.  Check out the new brunch menu here. And be on the look out for an updated dinner menu later this week.

Random acts of kindness

random acts of kindnessThe silver lining to the Boston Marathon tragedy is the countless acts of kindness and the outpouring of  emotion to show support.  Today the South End Patch reported how a neighbor of mine here in the South End purchased everyone’s coffee and tea this morning.  Perhaps I’m more shaken by the events from this week than I realize, because I found this story very touching.

If you’d like to read this feel good story, link to the South End Patch here.
