Evolution of Mom Dancing
Perhaps you have seen this video which has gone viral. I couldn’t resist hopping on the bandwagon so to speak and sharing this two minute video of Jimmy Fallon and Michelle Obama demonstrating the “Evolution of Mom Dancing”.
Trillium Brewery opens in Boston
Boston has just become home to another brewery. Trillium Brewery signed a two year lease in Fort Point Channel where they expect to eventually brew four year-round beers.
The first brew they expect to bring to market will be their flagship product, Trillium, a pale farmhouse ale. Trillium hopes to offer tastings in short order but they are still working with the city of Boston to make this happen.
Want to find out more about this new brewery setting up shop in Boston’s Fort Point Channel? You can reach out to JC Tetreault, Founder and Brewer, via their website www.trilliumbrewing.com or by calling 617.453.8745.
Boston Chops next restaurant to open in South End
The next restaurant expected to open in the South End is Boston Chops. Earlier this week I was able to sit down with restaurant owner, Brian Piccini, to talk about the imminent opening, the menu and his expectations.
Brian wasn’t able to predict when Boston Chops would open, grimacing slightly he shrugged and said “any day now”. I can tell you from the tour he gave me, the restaurant is ready – all he’s lacking is the glassware and liquor behind the huge bar he’s built, which happens to even include an oyster shucking station and raw bar. This is a large restaurant capable of seating well over 150+, and the space is beautifully designed. While there are plenty of rich woods and dark colors its custom light features, exposed brick and unfinished steel gives it an edge that suits the South End neighborhood this restaurant is calling home.
Boston Chops opening may be the best evidence that the recession is firmly behind us. The restaurant’s size and the expected price point means, Brian Piccini and his Executive Chef, Chris Coombs, are betting they can lure residents from the neighborhood and beyond to keep them busy seven days a week. When I inquired if there would be a bar menu he shook his head and said the decision to forgo a smaller bar menu was a conscious one.
I was not able to look at a wine list since it has yet to be pulled together, but the evening I sat down with Brian, wine was definitely top of mind as he sampled several Cabernets. By the size of the bar — one that comfortably seats 25 (I counted) and the impressive wine room encased in glass and on display for all to see — you too will be mindful that one has many options.
Although at the time that I wrote this post Boston Chops was not taking reservations, Brian has indicated one may call the restaurant or look to online restaurant reservation systems like ureserv.com and OpenTable: Boston Restaurants.

Flashback Friday
Since bringing this weekly post back to my blog, I’ve featured a lot of architectural changes including Boston’s waterfront, The Big Dig, and the building of the John Hancock Tower in the Back Bay. I thought I’d mix things up a bit and share this image of two college buddies from 1980. Like many of my photos for this weekly post, I pulled this from Dirty Old Boston on Facebook.

Restaurant review: Cinquecento brunch
Late last year Cinquecento opened in Boston’s South End to much fanfare. The restaurant has quickly developed a loyal following but last weekend they started serving brunch so I went over to sample the new menu. I’d love to be coy, but I can’t — everything about Cinquecento’s brunch impressed me — and one need only look at my initial review of this restaurant to realize I don’t pull punches if the food or service isn’t up to par.
My biggest gripe with brunch in Boston is that nearly every restaurant has the same menu — French toast, omelettes, eggs benedict, etc… Cinquecento has a completely fresh take inserting new and tasty options that will bring me back often. The menu is divided into pastries ($3 each or a basket for $15); smaller first plates which includes items like crepes with lemon ricotta and honey ($7.25); egg plates like their roasted mushroom, pancetta and fried eggs ($12.75); salads & breads like the tempting looking grilled cheese with apples and a honey walnut pesto ($8.75); and finally pasta dishes which are the most expensive items on the menu ranging from $14 – $17.
The crepes are great to share or have for brunch, but the pastry basket is a definite must try if you are with a group. While the homemade donuts were good, my favorite item was the cornetto which are round with a soft center that has baked ricotta and lemon that melts in your mouth and was so good with my coffee I’ve been craving them ever since.
I opted to try Cinquecento’s Uova in Camicia – truffled polenta with poached eggs and fontina cheese ($12.75). The polenta was rich and creamy (even Sergio who doesn’t particularly care for polenta scooped extras) and the poached eggs were cooked to perfection. The crusty Italian bread added a bit of crunch to all that creamy deliciousness.
The variety and quality of the food combined with the reasonable price point and convenience of having free parking all but guarantees Cinquecento will be a popular place to grab brunch so check it out before the crowds arrive.

Fenway Health Men’s Event
In a little more than two weeks, on Saturday, March 9th, Fenway Health will host it’s annual fundraiser, The Men’s Event. This black tie event gathers more than 1,300 gay, transgender and bisexual men and their friends and supporters for a night of dinner and dancing.
This year’s award recipient will be Marc Solomon who is perhaps best known for his work as executive director of MassEquality. While there he led the campaign to defeat two constitutional amendments in the first freedom to marry state in the nation (Massachusetts), beating back attacks by the Catholic Church, President George W. Bush, Gov. Mitt Romney, and the right-wing anti-gay industry.
Will you be attending this or the Women’s Event later this year? You may purchase tickets to this year’s event here.
