Parle Italiano

Speaking ItalianApparently I’ve been speaking fluent Italian all my life.  Perhaps that is why I’m so often misunderstood. Its not what I’m saying, its because I’m speaking in another language.

Handsome hunk

Wicked GawjusThe weather in Boston today is miserable. Its blustery outside and there is a steady drizzle. This is the kind of weather that I imagine inspires authors, but it does absolutely nothing for me.  In an attempt to brighten my day (and hopefully yours) I’ve included this photo of this handsome hunk.

Black tie season around the corner

Black TieBlack tie season is about to go into full swing because most charities use Spring and Fall as opportunities to host galas and other fund raising events.  So break out your tuxedo if you have one or in my case, I’ll dust off my Filene’s Basement purchase and try to eek out yet another season.

Although it is nearly six months away, mark your calendars because Red Bull’s Cliff Diving competition will be returning to Boston for the third year in a row on Saturday, August 24th.

Boston is the only stop in North America for this amazing tour which may be one of my favorite “free” events the city hosts for the public.  I’ll be writing about this event again in the summer as the date approaches, but I thought I’d share the good news now that the tour has been finalized and confirmed.

If you’ve never had a chance to see this competition, check out my video below from the first year in 2011.

May 25 | FRANCE – La Rochelle
June 22 | DENMARK – Copenhagen
June 29 | PORTUGAL – Azores
July 14 | ITALY – Malcesine
August 24 | USA – Boston
September 14 | UNITED KINGDOM – Wales
September 28 | BRAZIL
October 26 | THAILAND

The Bay Lights project in San Francisco

Artist rendering by Leo Villareal

Artist rendering by Leo Villareal

Next Tuesday The Bay Lights will create a lighting sculpture that is 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high.  The lighting celebration was inspired by the Bay Bridge 75th anniversary and will use 25,000 white individually programmed LED lights that are capable of creating dazzling displays across the bridge’s west span.

When I was in San Francisco earlier this month I had a great view of the bridge and it appeared the lights were already programmed, but according to the Bay Lights website, thebaylights.org, the program starts next Tuesday, March 5th and will shine from dusk to midnight for two years. Check out this video which explains the program in more detail.

Taste of the South End: Tuesday, March 5

Taste of the South EndOne week from today the Taste of the South End will take place at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) on Tremont Street.  All proceeds from this culinary delight that each year tempts the hundreds who help this event sell out will go to benefit New England’s largest AIDS service organization, The AIDS Action Committee.

Taste of the South End is Tuesday, March 5th
Doors are open from 7-9pm (VIP’s are welcome starting at 6pm)

It is difficult to articulate how much fun I have at this event each year and for those new to the area or curious to check out restaurants in the South End, this offers you a great opportunity to sample plates from 40+ restaurants in the neighborhood.  Many of the stations are hosted by the head chef or general manager of the restaurant so it also offers you a chance to chat 1:1.  If you haven’t yet, consider supporting AIDS Action Committee’s superb event The Taste of the South End by purchasing tickets today.

Jorge Perez Gonzalez: Ass percussionist

Berklee School of Music graduate, Jorge Perez Gonzalez, has released this rather odd video of him using four female bottoms as improvised bongo drums.  I’m at a total loss for words but thought it was funny to watch.

Temptation Tuesday

Temptation TuesdayAfter featuring younger guys the past few weeks, I thought I’d change things up with this guy who clearly can rock this tiny red speedo.  I’m feeling tempted – how about you?

Amazon goes gay

Amazon KindleWell that might be a bit of an overstatement, but the gay twist that Amazon includes in their new advertisement to promote the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite appropriately entitled “Husbands” is cute and catchy.

You may watch the quick advertisement below if you’ve not seen it yet.

Court rules NY Yankees are baseball’s “Evil Empire”

Evil empireEarlier this month a panel of judges in Washington, D.C. denied a request from a private entrepreneur to register the trademark for the phrase “Baseball’s Evil Empire.”  The phrase was first used by Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino in 2002.

The judges wrote, “In short, the record shows that there is only one Evil Empire in baseball and it is the New York Yankees. Accordingly, we find that (the Yankees) have a protectable trademark right in the term … as used in connection with baseball.

This ruling will not come as a surprise by anyone in Red Sox Nation, but lest people think we Bostonians are not being fair, we now have a legal precedent confirming the Yankee’s truly are evil.  You may read the full story here.

Chris Sosa – You Turn It On

My friend, Chris Sosa, has released his first single, You Turn It On. It’s a catchy dance tune, and I want to wish him much luck.  If you like it you may purchase it from iTunes here.

Bloomberg’s gun control super PAC

michael bloombergSelf-made billionaire and out-going Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, has set his sites on the National Rifle Association (NRA) and is putting his money where his rhetoric has been for years, forming a super PAC to target political candidates opposed to sensible gun reforms.

On Monday Bloomberg’s PAC released an ad against former Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D-Ill.)  who is running to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D).  His PAC has said it will spend $1+ million against her this week.  The ad says “Gun violence — it’s out of control. Debbie Halvorson will make it worse.  Halvorson opposed a ban on deadly assault weapons.  She co-sponsored legislation to allow some criminals to carry loaded hidden guns across state lines.  No wonder Halvorson received an A+ rating from the NRA, the special interest lobby against effective background checks.  Debbie Halvorson’s record: more guns in the hands of criminals.”  Watch the ad here.

Can Bloomberg’s money in key elections around the country combined with President Obama’s focus on passing sensible reforms  make a difference? I certainly hope so.

Missed periods

GrammarI should probably pick this up on Amazon.com.  It seems my grammar and spelling gets worse each year; no thanks to spell check and other enablers.
