Map of southern New England

Mitchell Gold pop up store opens in South End

Mitchell Gold + Bob WilliamsLate in 2012 Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams opened their newly expanded furniture store which doubled the floor space of their original storefront.

So I was surprised to see that Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams have opened a sizable Pop Up furniture store at 520 Harrison Avenue near the intersection of Harrison and Randolph Street.   According to the sales rep I spoke to the store will remain here in SoWa for the next few months and they are open from 10am – 6pm daily. Unfortunately, I did not get a phone number, but you may contact their flagship store in the South End for more details at 617-266-0075.Mitchell Gold Pop Up Store

South End gossip: Boston Chops opening

Shhh...

😦 Sadly Not Opening until Monday, 3/4

While there is no formal notice that Boston Chops will open Saturday, March 2nd, all signs point to a soft opening this weekend.

Curious what all the hype is about? Swing by to see if Boston Chops is open on Saturday and beat the rush that will certainly follow in the coming days / weeks.  Boston Chops is located on the corner of Washington and Union Park Street at 1375 Washington Street in the South End.

Flashback Friday

Flashback Friday

Overlooking Boston University’s West Campus was “Ellis The Rim Man”.  And nobody thought that was the least bit funny (well some of us did).

Furry Friday

Furry FridayWhen I look at this photo all I can think is “I wish I had chest hair like this.” I suppose having a rock solid body and a great smile doesn’t really hurt either.

BosGuy brain teaser

RiddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: There are four words in the English language that end in the letters “dous”.  Can you successfully list these four words?

Much thanks to Sergio for this week’s suggestion.

Candy Bar Pie ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s

Ben and Jerry's Be still my beating heart (which is probably exactly what happens if one eats too much of this).  Regardless, I think I’m in love with Ben & Jerry’s latest ice cream flavor currently available at local B&J’s Scoop Shops.

Candy Bar Pie includes peanut butter ice cream with fudge flakes, chocolate nougat & sweet & salty pretzel swirls. Just typing this makes me weak with desire. I recognize that I’m being ridiculous but I really don’t care and am currently planning how I can get myself to my local B&J’s Scoop Shop.

Obama to file pro-gay marriage brief

same sex marriageAccording to AmericaBlog, NBC News is reporting that President Obama will file an amicus brief today in the Proposition 8 (Prop 8) marriage equality case that is being heard by the Supreme Court at the end of March.

The brief must be filed by end of day  to meet today’s deadline and came as a surprise since the administration has been somewhat evasive on the issue up until this moment.

John Aravosis explains the details of the political wrangling over whether to submit the brief far better than I could. If interested in reading more visit his blog, AmericaBlog.

Boston’s theater scene

Lyric Stage Co.Boston’s theater companies in recent weeks have started their spring performances.  The Lyric Stage Co. currently features a two man show called Stones in his Pockets which opened earlier this month and runs through Saturday, March 16th.  You can read about this play which takes place in a small Irish village on the set of an American film crew in The Boston Globe’s review.

Also currently running is The New Rep’s comedy, Lungs.  This 90-minute show uses humor to address serious questions about overpopulation, global warming and our collective responsibilities to help preserve the environment for future generations. As with The Lyric Stage Co., performances started earlier this month and the production will hold its final show on Sunday, March 10th.

The A.R.T.Following the A.R.T.’s triumphant pre-Broadway run of Pippin, The American Repertory Theater in Cambridge has been performing The Glass Menagerie, which stars the hunky (and gay actor) Zachary Quinto. The show closes on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th so get tickets while they remain available.

New performances from The SpeakEasy Stage start later this week (Friday, March 1st to be exact) with their production of Clybourne Park, a show that addresses race, real estate and the volatile values of each. Inspired by Lorraine Hansberry’s classic play A Raisin in the Sun, this show explodes in two outrageous acts set 50 years apart. This new show will run through March 30th.

The Huntington TheatreStarting a week after The SpeakEasy Stage opens with their play that was inspired by A Raisin in the Sun, you can go and see The Huntington Theatre Company interpretation of this American classic. Based on the 1959 classic drama, this will be a fiercely moving show.  A Raisin in the Sun opens on Friday, March 8th and runs through April 7th.,

Also I’m very excited to share news that a new theater company called The Bridge Repertory Theater opens with their first production of The Lover, which opens on tonight and will run through Sunday, March 17th at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA).

How to become Pope

With the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, the College of Cardinals have convened to elect a new Bishop of Rome.  No doubt this process will seem strange to those who are not Catholic so I thought I’d share this rather entertaining and simple video that explains how a Pope is elected.

Provincetown summer 2013 calendar

PtownLast week Bay Windows ran an article featuring Provincetown’s calendar of events for 2013.  I thought it worth sharing as many of you may still be making summer plans to visit Provincetown. Theme weeks this summer that may be of interest include:

International Film Festival presents an array of narrative features, documentaries and short films.   This year’s festival runs from June 19-23rd.
Independence Week possibly the busiest week of the year in Provincetown so make your reservations ASAP – July 1-7th.
Bear Week one of the most popular weeks to visit, this year the week has been pushed back and runs from July 13-21st.
Carnival is a week long celebration from August 18-24th with the parade scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd.   This year’s theme is “Viva Las Vegas”.

For a complete listing read the Bay Windows‘ article.  Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about Provincetown.  If you are traveling from afar and will need overnight accommodations here in Boston either before or after your stay in Ptown, I’m happy to play the role of concierge and make suggestions regarding lodging, dining, night life and transportation.
