San Francisco’s dirty secret

san francisco escalatorI love San Francisco, but the story about why so many escalators at the BART’s Civic Center station have been out-of-service has left me shaking my head and a little sick to my stomach.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported last week when a repair team opened up one broken escalator earlier this summer they discovered so much human feces they had to call in a hazardous materials team. Yes,  you read that correctly, human poop has been breaking the escalators.  Apparently the area surrounding many BART stations are popular camping spots for many of the city’s homeless population and they are to blame for turning these stations into urban septic tanks (yuck).

So to all my friends in San Francisco, I wanted to suggest possibly pinching your nose the next time you find yourself taking an BART station escalator.

Men’s water polo

Men's Water PoloI have a regular post called Suddenly it makes sense.  Recently, I’ve had posts on my blog regarding surfing, gymnastics, and back in late June I featured water polo.

However, after seeing the BuzzFeed article 33 Things to love about water poloI realized I didn’t do the sport justice.  Here are some images of water polo Olympians.  If you’ve never bothered to watch the game, perhaps after viewing these pictures you’ll take an interest in the sport.

Ink Block developers announce Whole Foods coming to South End

The Ink Block refers to the 6 acres that was the long-time home to the Boston Herald. The newspaper has since moved their headquarters to the Seaport District, and a developer has renamed the property the Ink Block with plans to demolish the existing buildings and erect new ones ranging 5-9 stories.Boston Herald South End headquartersPlans include nearly five hundred apartments, space for several retail and restaurants and as of last week a Whole Foods grocery store. The chain confirmed last week that they had signed a long-term lease to have a 50,000 square foot store, making it the largest in Boston. The store is expected to open in 2014.

This “No Man’s Land” sits beside two major highways (I-90 and I-93), and will be a welcome addition to both The South End and Chinatown which is just across the Mass Pike.  The development has spurred interest in other properties abutting the Ink Block.

Jason Biggs unreleased “Magic Mike” audition

Here is a leaked video of Jason Biggs auditioning for the role of Dallas for the movie Magic Mike.  Matthew McConaughey ultimately landed the role, which might be for the best if you check out Biggs’ moves at the 3:00minute mark when he starts his dancing.

Note that the clip has profanity and isn’t safe to view at work.  Not sure how long this will remain so enjoy while it lasts.

Democratic Party expected to formally back gay marriage

same sex marriageThe Associated Press is reporting that The Democratic Party is moving to include support for gay marriage in the official party platform for the first time.  This would be a very significant milestone for advocates of same-sex unions and a repudiation of those opposing this right.

For better or worse, the US has only two major political parties and while many in the Democratic Party have been advocates and allies of the LGBT community, making same sex marriage an official party platform brings additional legitimacy to the issue and draws yet another distinction between the two parties.

The Princess Bride

Rob ReinerBack in mid-June I wrote about the Summer in the City Entertainment Series down at the Boston Harbor Hotel along the waterfront.  One of my favorite movies was the Rob Reiner Film, The Princess Bride.

One of my all-time favorite lines from the movie: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Later this week, Friday to be specific, The Princess Bride will be playing for free outside on the waterfront. I’d suggest seeing if you can finagle a table at the hotel’s Sea Grille to watch the fun unfold and sit in relative comfort while sipping a cocktail of your choosing. Sadly, while the movie is free the food at the Sea Grille is not.

Massachusetts has highest percentage of college graduates

college graduates by stateThe US currently ranks 16th in the world (percentage of population with college degrees).  Washington D.C. has the highest percentage population of college graduates with 65.6% of the population.  Massachusetts is the state with the highest percentage population of college graduates with 54.3%.

I’d venture a guess that the states with the higher percentage of college graduates also attract the higher paying jobs in the country.  Obama’s goal to have the United States make college more affordable and accessible makes a lot of sense when you think about a person’s lifetime income potential and what that means for the future economic prosperity of our country. Less than one-third of the total population of the states listed below have college degrees (several points below the national average of 39.3%). While a college degree is not a pathway to prosperity, education can be a great equalizer offering more career options especially during economic downturns.

These errors always make me chuckle when I read them. I agree with the friend that chicken fajitas sound far more appetizing.

Apple eyes Twitter

Apple social mediaOn Friday the New York Times reported that Apple is in talks with Twitter to make a “strategic investment” in the company.

While Apple has been very successful within the mobile space, the firm has failed miserably at tapping into social media, which has become an increasingly important for web and mobile.  Studies continue to show how social media which build communities of interest are increasingly influencing how people spend their time and money.  With Apple’s business model relying heavily on apps and their iTunes store this would seem like a smart long-term investment in their business model.

I have no idea if Twitter would be for sale, but the more I think about this pairing the more it would be interesting to see just what “strategic investment” means.

Let the shopping begin

modern furnitureFor the past couple of weeks, I’ve been tweeting about the disarray of my apartment during our remodeling.  I owe my good friend Sergio (another Sergio – not my other half) and Pierre much thanks for letting us shack up at their home during the worst of the construction.

The painters are finally finishing today we are busy cleaning (I had no idea how much of a mess flooring and painting would cause). The next step is purchasing a couple new pieces of furniture. The process will be gradual, but we wasted no time purchasing our new sofa “The Carmichael” from GUS furniture as shown above.
