Restaurant Review: Stephi’s on Tremont

Almost without fail, every Sunday I go out for breakfast. It’s a routine that I very much enjoy and thanks to the neighborhood that I live, there are plenty of options all within just a few blocks.

Ever since Stephi’s on Tremont opened in March of 2009 it’s been embraced by the neighborhood. It was a welcome replacement to the predecessor, which had become run down. Stephi’s owners (also the owners of Stephanie’s on Newbury) transformed the space into a 60+ seat restaurant that is always busy.

The weekend brunch menu for Stephi’s will appeal even to the pickiest of eaters with an even number of breakfast and lunch options ranging in price from $10-$16. Portion size is large no matter what you order and service is consistent. If you make a reservation and don’t want to sit on their sidewalk patio, I always recommend requesting one of the oversized booths at the front of the restaurant that provide you a birds eye view of the pedestrian traffic that never seems to end and often is great for people watching.

My preferred breakfast item is Stephi’s 3-egg omelet filled w/ smoked salmon, fried capers and a side of home fries. I also ask for the cream cheese on the side (otherwise they stuff that in the omelet too – and its just too much for me).

Smoked Salmon Omelet from Stephi’s $12.00

Stephi’s on Tremont is located at 571 Tremont Street in the South End

Rio de Janeiro welcomes gay travelers

Rio de Janeiro is one of my favorite cities in the entire world; it is easily one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited. It is also an intensely sexual city since most men and women seem to walk everywhere in the tiniest bathing suits I’ve ever seen.

Gay life in Brazil and especially in Rio is alive and thriving. To welcome gay tourists Riotur joined with Rio de Janeiro City Hall and made this video to show why the city is a favorite destination for lesbian and gay tourists. If you are planning to visit Rio or have any questions about this magnificent city (or Brazil in general) please feel free to send me a question and I’ll try my best to answer you.

Interesting Information about Rio
– First discovered in 1502 and founded in 1565
– 7,000,000 people live in Rio de Janeiro
– In 2014 Rio will host World Cup
– In 2016 Rio will host the Summer Olympics
– This is one of BosGuy’s favorite places in the entire world

Boston Gay Pride

Once a year, I need to break out my gay card to get it renewed so I head out and partake in Boston Pride and its festivities.

Despite today’s cold temperatures and rain, it could not stop me from getting out and enjoying myself. I did not bother to watch the Boston Pride parade. In my opinion Dayton, OH probably has a more interesting pride parade. However, I did make a pit stop at the Chandler Street Block Party (the most popular event of the week and oddly not even a recognized event by the Boston Pride committee – doesn’t that speak volumes?)

The colder weather and intermittent rain finally made me beat a hasty retreat over to Club Cafe where I danced the afternoon away. As is to be expected there were many interesting outfits and costumes. I was given a big smooch by a Liza impersonator and asked Wonder Woman to strike a quick pose with me.

Tracy Morgan (Part II)

As if only to perpetuate my frustration that I wrote about in my previous post with African American athletes and stars perceived acceptance of homophobia… this morning I read on Joe.My.God a really smart and very thoughtful response from Tina Fey regarding the difference between the comments from Morgan and the individual she knows.

The blog post under Tina’s thoughtful statement was a tweet from Chris Rock (another African American comedian who I genuinely enjoy watching).

Apparently GLAAD tweeted back: “Language about stabbing kids for being gay isn’t ‘foul.’ It’s dangerous.”

I get what Chris Rock is saying and I understand that comedians have a role to play in pushing the envelope and saying things that people can find offensive. I don’t begrudge anyone their right to speak their mind and realize what one person may find funny another won’t but it’s disheartening to read.

Chris Rock could’ve spoken up like Tina Fey did or he could’ve said nothing, but instead his response – much like Tracy Morgan’s joke leaves me feeling a sense of disappointment. If people can’t seem to pick up on that then so be it, but just like we live in a society where Tracy Morgan is free to say what he likes and Chris Rock is free to come to his friend’s defense; I’m also free to feel disappointed and share my feelings.

Tracy Morgan, apology not accepted

Today, Tracy Morgan said he was sorry for telling an audience in Nashville, TN, that if his son were gay, he would “pull out a knife and stab him.” According to the article in Boston.com, a Facebook account posted by an audience member from the TN performance said Morgan’s stand-up routine was full of homophobic references.

So here I sit on the Friday evening before Boston’s Pride Parade, and I’m left wondering have I lost my sense of humor? Am I so politically correct I can’t laugh off edgy jokes? I suppose we all have opinions on this and I’m not here to tell people what they should think or how they should feel, but the story leaves me cold. It also disappoints me because lately the African American community in particular seems so homophobic. Recently Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls) and Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers) were fined for making homophobic slurs and rapper 50 Cent seems to be making a career of maligning the gay community encouraging gay youth to commit suicide… among other graphic comments.

The silver lining to this story is that there was a measured response on social media platforms like facebook and twitter and main stream media like my local paper, The Boston Globe, picked up and ran the story. A decade ago, I don’t think anyone would have blinked and without sites like facebook or twitter the story would have never been told. However, my response to Tracy Morgan is “Apology not accepted.”

2011 Provincetown summer dates

And just like that I now have a cottage in the center of Provincetown for the week of Carnival. Incidentally, the photo above is not the “cottage” that I refer to. This summer Sergio and I will make three visits to the tip of Cape Cod.

Our first visit is on Thursday, June 30th. We will spend the 4th of July holiday with the throngs of others and then a few weeks later we will be in Provincetown from July 21st – 24th so we can spend time with friends who have a weekly rental. Our final (planned visit) is the week of Carnival August 14th – 20th.

Should you find yourself passing through Boston en route to Ptown or if you will be there the same dates I have planned, please let me know. If you do not have travel plans to Boston/Ptown, more is the loss for me. Hopefully next summer will bring you here so we can meet in person. For those local guys who will be there, let’s plan on grabbing a planter’s punch at the Boatslip tea dance.

Here are some pictures from last year’s Carnival parade. For all its hype its really more PG-13 than anything else. This is no Folsom Street Fair nor is it IML, but it is extremely flirtatious and very fun.

Breaking out the brooms

The Red Sox came back in dramatic fashion last night to beat the NY Yankees and sweep them. What a sweet start to their road trip.

Get outta my way

With most of Boston Pride activities shifting into high gear for the weekend, I figured I would add some Kylie to the mix. Her concert this past April had all the excitement of a Pride event. How cool would that be to see her during your home city’s Pride celebration?

Food truck phenomenon

The Boston Globe has a pretty cool listing on its Boston.com site today regarding the sudden popularity of food trucks. This trend first started out in southern California (as nearly all automotive trends seem to) and has over the past few years worked its way East. Starting a couple of years ago you’d have been hard pressed to name a food truck (unless your favorite ice cream truck counts). However, now they seem to be everywhere.

Beware, not all food trucks are equal either. Depending on your diet and preferences, some of these food trucks which often specialize in certain food preparations, can seem a bit kooky. I’m pretty lucky because there are always many food trucks attending SoWa Open Market. I have a couple of personal favorites now, but I’m curious to find out if you too have tried any of the food trucks you see around Boston. If you are not from Boston, do tell… Is this something you’ve noticed in your city or when I say food truck are you scratching your head wondering what the heck I’m referring to.

Mark Wahlberg filming "Ted" (part 2)

Earlier this week I mentioned that Seth McFarlane (creator of The Family Guy) is filming in the neighborhood with local boy, Mark Wahlberg, and Mila Kunis. While filming will continue throughout Boston and much of the South End, they were able to capture the scenes they needed out in front of my apartment.

Last night Sergio joined a throng of onlookers as they filmed another scene. They had to film this at night, but it is a day scene so they had the entire block filled with giant lights flooding the streets with artificial sunlight.

David Gandy (sigh)…

Suddenly I’m terribly thirsty… Brings whole new meaning to the phrase “tall drink of water” doesn’t it?

Boston Pridelights 2011

Pridelights in Boston always occurs on the Tuesday of Pride week. It use to be a huge community event that was staged on Tremont Street in the middle of the South End, but a few years back the venue changed and it is now hosted at Club Cafe.

The change of venue saved the event because cost and changes to the plaza that traditionally hosted it had became prohibitive, but the trade off means the event is a fraction of its former size. This year’s Pridelights was filled with a series of performances from Boston’s drag community. The crowd which interestingly attracts a wide demographic seemed to enjoy the event. For me the highlight was seeing a few friends that I know socially and spending time with fellow blogger and twitter-friend, Lenny. You can check out his blog, itzLenny or say hello to him on twitter, Product19.

Here are a few photos from tonight’s Pridelights at Club Cafe Boston.

NSFW – AntiTexting PSA

Thanks to Gawker for sharing this story. Beware that the video is full of vulgarities so for those who might be offended feel free to just read a bit about what one movie house in Austin has done to deter people from using their cell phones while in the movie theater.

Apparently one (former) patron of this movie house was ejected and left a colorful message complaining about her treatment. The owners decided to take the ex-patron’s rant and use it as a PSA to ensure that everyone is aware of their zero tolerance policy with regards to cell phone usage. I think this is brilliant and the woman dialing in to complain comes across as a complete _____________ (you can fill in the blank).

Mark Wahlberg filming "Ted"

Movie Director Seth McFarlane is filming outside my apartment for his movie Ted, which stars both Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. This movie has been filming in Boston and in particular the South End for the past few months, but tonight they are filming a “day” scene at Gaslight. For those who have read my blog for awhile you may recall this restaurant was used for several weeks in the fall of 2009 for the Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz film “Wichita” which was later renamed Knight & Day.

Its not clear to me if Mark or Mila will be appearing tonight. I had hoped I would be able to capture some photos of the stars like I did of Tom & Cameron, but it seems unlikely so instead I’ve posted a picture of the view outside my window. If something more exciting manifests, I’ll be sure to share.

Tweet of the Day: In love

So true… thank you for sharing the quote Marius.
