BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

Everyone my call can hear
From the old to the newborn.
Feed me and I’ll disappear
Though, I’m never truly gone.

Friday, December 1st is opening night for The Lyric Stage Company’s latest production, Hold These Truths, a 90-minute play based on the true story of Gordon Hirabayashi, an American Sociologist and son of Japanese immigrants, who is best known for resisting internment during World War II.

Actor Michael Hisamoto plays Hirabayashi, a college student and a Quaker, whose hope and patriotism will leave you cheering.  Hirabayashi’s story is told through flashbacks, taking the audience through his early life, challenging the curfew and exclusion orders in 1942. His storytelling is assisted by a trio of kurogo — traditional Japanese stage hands.

While Hirabayashi may have lost his case when he was alive, but Hirabayashi, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 by President Barack Obama. Paving the way to Hirabayashi’s ultimate victory. Full of theatricality and humanity, Hold These Truths celebrates resistance and offers startling parallels for contemporary politics.

This week on Instagram: giovanicordioli

For those of you who love Brazil, travel photographer, Giovani Cordioli’s Instagram account is worth checking out. Giovani captures beautiful images of Cariocas (Cariocas are people who live in Rio de Janeiro) and the natural beauty for which the city is so well known.

Most of Cordoli’s photos contain breathtaking images of the natural beauty  for which Brazil is famous but my favorite photos are of Rio’s Guanabara Bay.

“A Great Hymn to Christmas and Sexuality” – John Waters

One of Boston’s naughtiest holiday theatrical traditions, The Slutcracker, opens later this week on Friday, December 1st at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, The Slutcracker provides a scene-by-scene retelling of The Nutcracker with a naughty twist.

Performances start Friday, December 1st and will run through December 31st, but tickets to this show sell quickly and they have a limited calendar the last week of the month so do not delay.

Online novel: Theta by Damien

An Aussie blogger who now calls the land of Dorothy home is writing an interesting online novel, that you can read at your leisure for free. At the time I wrote this post he had published a prologue and the first three chapters.

I would describe Theta as a modern day action-suspense novel set in Australia, that will appeal to those who enjoy Gothic and Sci-Fi genres. The moral codes that drive some of these characters is reminiscent of comic book superheroes who are driven by a sense of justice. I’ve pulled a section from the book to provide you with a taste of the authors writing style and part of the story.

She looked back to see a figure dressed entirely in black with a balaclava over his head.  For a moment, she was amused at the absurdity of his dress given it was inner city Melbourne in the twenty-first century and not Russia during the Cold War.  He fired at her but she was prepared.  She easily evaded the bullet and sprinted forward to knock the gun out of his hand.  What she was not prepared for was the strength with which he returned the blows she was raining down on him.  This was no average assassin; this was one of their allies’ kind.  With that, she flashed into her Human/Lycan hybrid form and called on all her speed and strength.

I suggest you check out Theta, starting with the prologue which you can read here: Theta: Prologue.

How Gabe Kapler’s body image helped gay male sports fans

Boston Red SoxI wanted to highlight an article about body image and feeling comfortable in your own skin after reading an article earlier this month on the OUT Sports blog which featured former Red Sox outfielder and the next manager of the professional baseball team, Philadelphia Phillies.

Gabe “The Babe” Kapler (as I often referred to him) was featured in the blog’s post, Why new Phillies manager Gabe Kapler was important to gay male sports fansWhile I don’t know if I agree with all their points, I do agree that Gabe has an amazing body and has always been happy to pose shirtless. In an age where athletes continue to train to build endurance and avoid injury, Kapler was the rare professional baseball player with a great physique who liked to show it off.  While he is happily married with two teenage children, if my memory serves me correct he was a great advocate for his wife when she spoke out about domestic violence (something she had to contend with in a previous relationship) in addition to being socially accepting of LGBTQ issues.
