Nearly 1,000 new residential units approved for South End

south end real estateThis past week the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) approved two more real estate projects in the South End’s SoWa district that combined will result in bringing more than 970 new residential units to Harrison Ave.

The first and larger development is The Harrison Albany Block, (shown above from Albany Street), it will include 650 residential units and span from Harrison Avenue to Albany Street between East Canton and East Dedham streets.

The large development will include three levels of below grade parking garage, 29,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space and 65 affordable units (with some designated specifically for working artists). In addition, the developers will pay into a BPDA fund to purchase or subsidize another 65 units someplace else. Originally proposed as a 710 unit development back in the fall of 2015 modest reductions were made in response to neighborhood concerns.

The second residential complex approved by the BPDA this past week is for the 370-380 Harrison project, which will include 92 condos and 232 apartments that will be built on the site of the former Quinzani Bakery and Ho Kong Bean Sprout Co. next to the Ink Block. The developer has committed to ensuring at least 20% of the units will be marketed as affordable.

Similar to the Harrison Albany Block, the 370-380 Harrison Ave. project has scaled back slightly from the original proposal shared last March, which initially proposed 280 residential units. It is unclear if their original proposal of including 180 parking spaces and commercial space were changed.

Grab Your Wallet

donald-trumpI was talking to my brother last week and we both agreed that one good thing that has resulted from a Trump presidency is a political activism that neither of us have seen or felt before. A great example of this is Grab Your Wallet, which got a nice shout out from last week’s Sunday New York Times.

Grab Your Wallet has organized like-minded individuals to reach out to specific contacts at key retailers where the Trump brand is sold. Last month Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus removed Ivanka Trump’s name from their websites and employees at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls were instructed not to display her products and remove signage with her name on it. Grab Your Wallet was not cited by these retailers by name when they indicated sales had dropped, but it is hard to imagine all those letters and calls didn’t rattle retailers.

boycott trump

Grab Your Wallet website now includes a list of places to consider boycotting as well as a short script if you want to voice your concerns. With as many as 32,000 people visiting the website an hour, Grab Your Wallet is one of many grassroots organizations affecting change and it has the attention of the White House as Kellyanne Conway proved when she tried to prop up Ivanka’s brand by illegally hawking Ivanka Trump’s products after it was dropped by Nordstrom.

Sample letter or call you can make from Grab Your Wallet
Hi I am a customer of [Insert Retailer’s Name]. Unfortunately, I can no longer do business with your company because it does business with the Trump family. If your company were to no longer do business with the Trump family I would enthusiastically return as a customer. Please communicate my feedback to management.

If you’d like to see what organizations are recommended to boycott and get personal email addresses or phone numbers of key contacts at those organizations to let your voice be heard, visit: grabyourwallet.org

If you’d like to read the full article, which inspired me to write this post visit, The Anti-Trump Activist Taking on Trump

UPDATE: I would encourage everyone to reach out to retailers, because they are taking note (see my correspondence with LL Bean below). I’m convinced that Donald Trump cares more about his brand than anything else. Boycotting those who do business with the Trump family sends a very direct and personal message to the president.

Leadership envy: Justin Trudeau

justin-trudeau-canadian-prime-ministerIt is human nature to be drawn to those we find attractive. Typically attraction will wax or wane as you learn more about an individual.

Since his election to office, I’ve found my interest and attraction in Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has continued to grow. He seems to share many of the values I admired in President Obama and miss in our current president.

For those of you who may also be developing a crush on this Prime Minister to the north, I wanted to share a recent post on Unicorn Booty of some new photos of Trudeau when he was younger – enjoy.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle

With 3 or 4 points, I can cause pain,
If you use me a lot and weight you will gain.

Sometimes I’m paired with a blade,
I’m quite useful and totally man made.

US News & World Report ranks Mass. best state in U.S.

March 2017Recently I wrote about the survey findings from Boston Consulting Group, that showed Massachusetts taking the top spot in their “well being” study. They cited a healthy population that has near universal healthcare insurance, education and an incredibly robust and balanced economy as reasons for the top ranking.

Just two weeks later U.S. News and World Report awarded Massachusetts its top honor, citing the state’s continuing academic achievement, innovative health care system, and strong economy in its ‘Best States’ ranking – sound familiar?massachusetts The US News & World report evaluates all fifty states across seven categories: health care, education, opportunity, economy, infrastructure, crime and corrections, and government. Massachusetts ranked No. 1 in education and No. 2 in healthcare, and placed within the top ten for economy and crime and corrections.  There are many surveys that evaluate quality of life and economic opportunity.  When you start seeing different surveys finding the same thing over and over again it becomes a trend.

Where did your state rank? Check out the listing of all fifty states here.

1955 portrait of Donald Windham (left) with life-partner Sandy Campbell by celebrity gay photographer and writer Carl Van Vechten.

Donald Windham and Sandy Campbell were a well-known couple in New York’s gay literary circles. It was at a chance meeting at Paul Cadmus’ studio that Donald met Sandy, who was modeling for one of Cadmus’ paintings. Windham and Campbell began a 45 year relationship that led to a collaboration as avid book collectors, voracious readers, and friends with many of the most important literary figures of their time. The couple lived together from 1943 until Campbell’s death in 1988. Windham passed away 22 years later in 2010.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share?
