Boston Ballet The Nutcracker opens this week

Boston Ballet NutcrackerFriday, November 27th – the day after Thanksgiving – Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker  opens at Boston’s Opera House.  A few years ago Mikko Nissinen and the Boston Ballet updated their production of the classic tale set to the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky.  This is a classic holiday tradition that I highly recommend. Tickets are very affordable, starting at $35 and performances run through December 31st.  Check out the video below of the Boston Ballet’s Snow Scene – like you’ve never seen it before – from The Nutcracker.

Buy local this holiday season: visit 460 Harrison Ave in the South End

Photographer: Ali Horeanopoulos

The South End has an eclectic mix of retail space and nowhere is that more evident than at 460 Harrison Avenue along the pedestrian walkway, Thayer Street. Cate McQuaid from The Boston Globe wrote a great article talking about the 21 new galleries that opened last month, but her article only tells part of the story because joining these new galleries are 90 artist studios and 40 boutiques.

While Newbury Street has more shops, even Back Bay’s pride and joy can’t rival the South End’s 460 Harrison Avenue and Thayer Street for those looking for unique gift items or those who want to support local businesses. Not a single retail chain can be found here and many of the products sold are unique expressions from the local arts community – meaning your purchases go back into this community – not a corporate headquarters based somewhere far away.

As we approach the holiday season, I’d like to offer a plug for these new galleries, boutiques and artist studios. Shop here first. You may be surprised by the quality and variety. It’s like nothing you’ve seen at any shopping mall.

South End restaurant Addis Red Sea for sale

South End, DiningThe Ethiopian restaurant, Addis Red Sea, has been operating in the South End since 1988 but Eater Boston says that restaurant is now up for sale. According to the article published last week, the restaurant is being sold “as shown,” with 68 seats and an existing beer and wine license.

The combination of their fantastic location and their existing beer and wine license will no doubt result in the owners getting a lot of money but my immediate question(s) are when will they close? For how long will the space be vacant? And who will replace the affordable and unique dining establishment?

Boston Public Library to add cafe and studio

Boston Public LibraryLast week The Boston Globe reported that the Boston Public Library’s 1970s-era stone building which is currently being renovated will soon house a new library cafe and space for a satellite home for WGBH public radio and television.

The plan will transform the first floor of the Johnson Building into an all-day cafe and WGBH satellite studio that pedestrians will be able watch through windows on Boylston and Exeter streets, during live broadcasts. This is WGBH’s first satellite station outside its Brighton newsroom and will be housed in an 800-square-foot open space in the same area as the cafe, which will be open during regular library hours, with limited table service in the evening.

You can read more about the studio and cafe in The Boston Globe article, here.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.

If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and try to figure out the answer together.  I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: A woman shoots her husband, then holds him under water for five minutes. A little while later, they both go out and enjoy a wonderful dinner. How can this be?
