Anti-gay Legislation found to drive significantly higher poverty rates for LGBT

Anti-LGBT legislation contributes to higher poverty ratesLast week Paying an unfair price: The financial penalty for being LGBT in America caught my attention. The report – the first ever I recall on this topic – paints a bleak picture of the added financial burdens LGBT Americans face because of legalized discrimination in the form of anti-LGBT laws at the national, state and local levels.

The report documents how inequitable laws harm the economic well-being of LGBT people in three key ways:

  • Enabling legal discrimination in jobs, housing, credit, and other areas
  • Failing to recognize LGBT families, both in general and across a range of programs and laws designed to help American families
  • Creating barriers to safe and affordable education for LGBT students and the children of LGBT parents

Paying an Unfair Price” offers broad recommendations to help strengthen economic security for LGBT Americans including:

  • Instituting basic nondiscrimination protections at the federal and state level
  • Allowing same-sex couples to marry in all states
  • Allowing LGBT parents to form legal ties with the children they are raising
  • Protecting students from discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity

New England loves their brunch

firstweeat.com Pretty much the entire northeast is obsessed with brunch.  At least that is what University of Arizona researchers have concluded.  First We Feast shares this and some other rather interesting information about food and Twitter on their website, firstwefeast.com.

Late night Food Truck Festival tonight

Boston late night eats

Saturday, October 4th 11:30 pm – 1:30 am

Come down and check out the Food Truck Festival tonight (Saturday night) on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.  Participating food trucks include:  Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Chicken & Rice Guys, Tenoch, The Dining Car and Cookie Monstah.  Look for the food trucks to be joined by a few fashion trucks as well so you can shop while you nosh.

Although the event web page doesn’t indicate it, I believe this will all take place in Dewey Square (near South Station) on the Greenway.

Republicans are people too (just not these people)

#ImARepublicanVinny Minchillo, who worked on ads for Romney’s presidential campaign, recently told The New Republic that the #ImARepublican campaign is intended to help put an end to the partisan vitriol he feels is directed at his party.

Unfortunately for Minchillo this campaign only reaffirms the perceptions it was intended to challenge. In lieu of reaching out to Republicans they used stock photography. So the impression that Republicans care about the concerns of minorities or that one can be a Republican and an environmentalist seem to ring hollow.

Republicans are people tooWe all know that there are people of color who vote Republican. We also all know that there are Republicans who care about the environment.  However, this poorly executed campaign is unlikely to change perceptions and will be made the punchline of jokes…. Testicular Cancer AwarenessIt was inevitable I suppose, but looking to capitalize on the social media success of this summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, U.K. based Check One Two has created the “Crotch Grab Challenge” to raise awareness about testicular cancer and to encourage men to regularly examine themselves.

Recently Hugh Jackman decided to lend a hand (so to speak) to support the cause and tweeted out the above photo signalling his acceptance of the challenge. He then nominated Niel Patrick Harris, Michael Strahan and Ricky Gervais.
