Sarah Sliverman closes the gap

Sarah Silverman releases a hilarious video about a not so funny subject; equal pay.  Nothing infuriates me more than people treating the idea of feminism like a dirty word. For the record, feminism is about fighting for gender equality and fair treatment.  I’m happy that Sarah can bring attention to this topic.

The Harlot's Guide to Classy CocktailsEarlier this week NYC Drag Queen, Jeza Belle, released her new book The Harlot’s Guide to Classy Cocktails. I figured with the weekend right around the corner this was as good a time as any to give the book a plug.  Ms. Belle’s book includes delicious drink recipes as well as true drunken tales from drag queens around the world.

There is more information about Jeza Belle on her Facebook page.  To learn more about or to purchase the book, link here: harlotsguide.com.

Boston uberX rides are less than national average

Uber BostonAccording to an article in this week’s BostInno the cost of an uberX ride in Boston is less than the national average.

Data in BostInno’s article shows that Boston uberX rides of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 miles will all cost less than the national average. The graph put together by Streetwise National Data Editor shows that users gradually save more the longer their trip – in terms of mileage or minutes traveled.

The miraculous Saint Anthony

Catholic PriestI’m not a particularly religious individual nor am I superstitious, but I was raised Roman Catholic and there are some traditions from my childhood that have stuck.  Catholics are taught to pray to different patron saints and while I rarely pray – whenever I lose something I still immediately turn to Saint Anthony.

Despite the irrationality of praying to a saint from the 1200s, it is hard for me to think of an instance where Saint Anthony hasn’t come through so why wouldn’t I keep praying?

St. Anthony, St. Anthony please look around.

I’ve lost my <Insert Object> and it needs to be found.

Which is why I’m writing this post, because I promised Saint Anthony I would, and since I know I’ll be in need of his services in the future, no matter how crazy it sounds, I don’t want to wreck what has been an amazingly helpful relationship for 40+ years.

St. Anthony resolves the mystery of BosGuy’s missing keys

On Tuesday, September 16th I flew to Texas for a business trip and unbeknownst to me, I lost my keys when I went through security. I didn’t realize this until the following Monday, after which I proceeded to search all the nooks and crannies of my travel bag, pants pockets, jackets, and even our car.  By Tuesday I was feeling pretty down and decided to give “Tony” — that’s how I affectionately refer to Saint Anthony — a call by reciting my prayer over and over. The next morning when I woke up I recalled that going through security in Logan Airport had resulted in some of my contents getting jostled so I called TSA Logan Airport Lost and Found and I spoke to Officer Tony. In less than a few minutes Officer Tony told me he had keys matching my description and I could come by to pick them up at my convenience.  Thank you St. Anthony.

HRC’s 2014 Hall of Shame

Michele BachmanEarlier this week the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) identified the most anti-equality elected officials in the US Congress.  Ratings are based on past voting records, their introduction and co-sponsorship of anti-LGBT legislation, and their public statements.

Any wonder why I self-identify as a Democrat? While both parties are represented, this list is certainly weighted in favor of the Republican Party.  I revile this party as a socially divisive, reactionary group that propagates hateful, xenophobic, misogynistic and homophobic legislation. While there are certainly exceptions, until there is a significant change in rhetoric and leadership, I can’t fathom supporting a national candidate who runs as a Republican. Human Rights Campaign, Michelle Bachmann

Masculine Halloween costumes for your effeminate son

Why you should do glute bridges before leg day

Are you having trouble building up your ass? Do you only feel your quads get sore and swollen on leg day? You are not alone.

Since we have adapted to sitting for prolonged hours in a day, we have effectively “shut off” our glute from sitting on them, making our quads do all the work. This makes us more likely to have knee pain and injuries, or even worse a bad case of what I like to call “Pancake Ass”.  One way to avoid this is to practice “Glute activation” before you start your leg workout.

Realm health and fitness tips from KyleThis is what I have my clients do when they have trouble “feeling” their glutes work.

  • Hip flexor and quad static stretch for 1 minute on each side.
  • Glute bridges on the ground with toes up, and driving through their heels for 20 reps or literally until they “feel” their glutes working.

Boston area Haunted Houses

Boston area haunted houses, haunted houses New EnglandBoston Area Haunted Houses

For those of you who love the more ghoulish side of Halloween, visits to one or more haunted houses always seems to be in order.  While I’m no expert on this sort of thing, I’ve done some digging and wanted to share with you some haunted houses you and your friends can plan to visit between now and the end of the month. I’ve not attended any of these locations so please share your comments to help others pick and choose where is the best haunted house.

Barrett’s Haunted Mansion is south of Boston in Abbington, MA. Tuesday, Oct 21 they will host their special Darkness Unleashed, which requires advance ticket purchase. Here is a $3 coupon good for visits Sunday thru Thursday.  More details can be found on their website, BHMansion.com.

Factory of Terror has three locations in Worcester, West Warwick, RI and Fall River. Print off a $2 coupon good for visits  Sunday thru Thursday WorcesterWest Warwick, RI and Fall River.  More details about individual locations, tickets and hours can be found on their website, factoryofterror.com.

Salem’s 3-D Haunted House adds a twist by making this tour a 3-D extravaganza. You can also purchase combo tickets to get nightly walking tour through parts of Salem. Visit their website to get more info about tickets and  the 3-D Haunted house.

Spooky World may be the largest of the haunted houses in the area with their two locations in Litchfield, NH and Cranston, RI.  Based on feedback I read online, it seems like you would be best inclined to purchase their VIP tickets, but these come at a hefty price of ~$60 on Friday and Saturday or ~$50 Sunday thru Thursday. More details about Spooky World can be found on their website, Spookyworld.com.

Unexpected marriage equality victory comes from SCOTUS decision not to review cases

same sex marriageMarriage Equality Update from NYT: The Supreme Court on Monday denied review in all five pending same-sex marriage cases, clearing the way for such marriages to proceed in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The move was a major surprise and suggests that the justices are not going to intercede in the wave of decisions in favor of same-sex marriage at least until a federal appeals court upholds a state ban.
