The legal battle Goodridge vs. Department of Public Health is etched in my mind.  Not only did I follow this local story, but I also stood outside the Massachusetts State House in the months that followed the ruling showing my support in the freezing cold to offset the hundreds of people who came from all over the country to protest and pressure our State Legislature to reverse the State Supreme Court’s ruling.

This is part of our story.  Be  proud of what started here in 2004.  We set the country on fire with this debate and have proven that the criticism that this would destroy the institution of marriage is nothing but homophobic rants; a decade later and Massachusetts continues to have the lowest divorce rate in the country. #InconvenientTruth

Turkish Airlines starts nonstop service to Istanbul

Roundtrip nonstop service from Boston’s Logan Airport to Istanbul Turkey started today.  This city is definitely on my bucket list to visit and with introductory roundtrip fares starting at $799 it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility, but sadly it won’t happen this year.

What cities would you like to see Boston have a nonstop flight to that Logan doesn’t currently service?

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Kyle KranzkyWhat are you trying to get out of your gym routine?  Why do you go?  Do you want to lose weight?  Gain muscle?  Here are some tips for the two most common reasons people tell me they go to the gym.

Muscle mass (Hypertrophy): If you are looking to gain muscle mass shoot for anywhere between 3-4 sets, with 8-12 reps to “failure”. Failure means your muscle is taxed to the extent that an additional rep is impossible. Get specific and stick to 4-5 different exercises for a movement (PUSH, PULL, LEGS). Rest between sets can be 90 seconds to 2 minutes but not longer.

Example workouts for PULL day: lat pull down, bent over barbell row, single arm dumbbell row, dumbbell reverse flies.

Weight loss: If you are trying to lose weight try to hit a rep range of 15-20 (also to failure) with 3-5 sets per exercise.  Having a “full body” workout is optimal because tissue breakdown occurs in every large muscle group, which transfers into a greater caloric expenditure and a greater “after burn” to replenish the muscles. Rest for only 30 seconds to a minute.

Example circuit: deadlift, bench press, squat, lat pull down machine and reverse lunge.

Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe to close in June

South End Charlie's Sandwich ShoppeEarlier this morning, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus Avenue in the South End, announced via Twitter that they would be closing  at the end of June. Charlie’s first opened their doors in 1927 and has remained a popular cheap eats diner serving mostly South End residents, but through the years many a celebrity has stopped in to be photographed while enjoying some of their famous hash.

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Birthday MomI wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, my sister Elizabeth, my sister-in-law Ashley and all the other wonderful women I know who have taken on the toughest job I can think of, motherhood.

Fortunately, I don’t suffer from the same “mother” issues Albert Brooks does in this 1990s movie. Must be because I have a fabulous Mom.

This was the first flash mob video I recall seeing.  It has accumulated more than 29,000,000 views since it was posted back in March 2009.

The flash mob comprised more than 200 dancers, performing a version of “Do Re Mi” in the Central Station of Antwerp on a busy Monday morning on March 23, 2009, enthralling nearly everyone in the station.

What your erection says about your health

Men's HealthDr. Joel Kahn’s article Survival of the Firmest: What your erection says about your health in Mind Body Green caught my attention when I saw it on Facebook last week.

It isn’t quite as sensational as it might sound and for guys who may be suffering from erectile dysfunction, I’d encourage you to read this article.  The article cautions how E.D. can possibly be a precursor to the presence of diseased arteries and possible future heart disease.  I’m no doctor so I can’t comment, but I wanted to share it since this can often be something potentially important to talk about with your doctor.

What your erection says about your health

In a somewhat related story, a 2013 study found that Oral L-citrulline (something that is naturally found in watermelon may help men suffering from E.D.).  More about that here, here and here.

One more reason I love Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth WarrenI don’t care what your political preference is or if you like / dislike US Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts. I can’t understand why Sen. Warren is the only one asking these questions.
