Development plans to replace Boston’s Ramrod / Machine will include LGBTQ-theater

Last November I published this blog post, which got more than a little attention,  Boston’s gay club Ramrod / Machine days are numbered. Last week more information was shared about the development project that is aiming to bulldoze the two-story building later this fall to build a private dorm.

Last week Universal Hub published that the British company building private dorm buildings filed formal plans for a 15-story, 533-bed dorm, replacing the building that houses a number of businesses including one of Boston’s last full-time gay bars, Machine / Ramrod. Someone must have mentioned that the pending demolition has struck a nerve with some in the community because they are planning to include a 6,000-square foot, 120-seat theater to be turned over to a non-profit group that will be centered on the LGBTQ community.

The Boylston Black Box will embrace the long-standing LGBTQ heritage of the Project Site. Since the 1970s, the Project Site has served as the location of various LGBTQ entertainment venues, including ‘The 1270’, ‘Quest’, ‘RamRod’, and ‘Machine’. These entertainment venues have been emblematic LGBTQ spaces and have often served – directly and indirectly – as a base for the LGBTQ community in the Fenway neighborhood.

Could this be the new home for Ryan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans?

Game of Thrones final season starts tonight

Season seven of the Game of Thrones ended after just seven episodes in August 2017, but tonight the series returns to HBO. The much hyped and incredibly successful series inspired by  George R. R. Martin’s, A Song of Ice and Fireseries, may be a little fuzzy for many who have not seen an episode in 20 months.

Although many GOT fans may have been binge-watching in anticipation of tonight’s return, CNN has made it a bit easier for all of us who don’t have the time or inclination to revisit past shows with their article, 10 critical ‘GoT’ details to remember during the final season.

I’m looking forward to the final season and hope it lives up to the hype. Do you plan on watching the final season of Game of Thrones?

Big Brothers shortage: Consider being a mentor

As a former Big Brother I can attest to how wonderful this organization is and how much good can come out of signing up to be a Big Brother. While I hope that I helped make a difference with the 12 year old I was matched up with for two years (we’ve lost touch in the years that followed), I got more out of the experience than I ever bargained and would recommend men in their 20s and 30s in particular to consider giving of their time as a Big Brother.

In case you are not familiar, the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is to partner with under-resourced families to provide their children with transformational, one-to-one professionally-supported relationships with caring adult mentors, so that their children will thrive. Unfortunately, according to a JP news article, there are more than 200 children  waiting to be matched with mentors.

If you are interested in learning more about how to become a mentor, visit their website at, www.bbbsmb.org.

Vintage gay

This week’s photo is from the  studio of August Seitz in Bohemia 1880s, which I found on the now defunct tumblr site past male beauty.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Ross jirglRoss Jirgl is originally from Wisconsin and now lives out on the West coast. If you are an avid watcher of The Bachelor you may remember his failed attempt to win back an ex-girlfriend of his who was on the show. Her rebuke ultimately gave him his 15-minutes of fame, which based on this article, it sounds like he would have been happy to do without.

As you might expect Ross has a number of head turning photos like this one which I’m sharing.  I actually used one of his past Instagram photos for a Furry Friday earlier this year which you can see here.
