GTI Properties proposes new residential building at 490 Harrison Avenue

South End, SoWa, GTI Properties, 490 Harrison Avenue

Outline roughly depicts 490 Harrison Ave. 16-unit expansion proposed by GTI Properties || Photo from Google Maps

Last month GTI Properties shared plans with the Old Dover Neighborhood Association to build a new 70′ residential building, extending the existing apartment building at 490 Harrison Avenue.

The proposed design includes plans for sixteen rental units as well as a ground level 5.000 sq ft retail space along with two smaller storefronts in the back of the building. Apartments will range from 1,200 – 1,300 sq ft. No information was provided on the exact number of parking spaces the new building would shrink the existing parking lot. Assuming the project receives the necessary approvals, GTI Properties would look to break ground starting January 2019.

Apartments at 490 Harrison Avenue currently rent for $2,400-$2,600 for one bedroom and $2,800-$4,250 for two bedrooms, begging the question will the neighborhood and city ask for affordable units to be included before approving the project?

One year later: Still she persisted

Cambridge / Boston Women’s March on the Cambridge Common, January 20, 2018.  Photo Credit: Greg Cook || gregcookland.com

One year after the historic Women’s March of 2017 and just days after the Federal Government was forced to shutdown, thousands took to the streets in cities all across the United States. While the massive crowds that overtook and overwhelmed the streets of Boston were smaller this year when people gathered on the Cambridge Common, it remains inspiring for me to see people braving the cold to exercise their rights and make their voices heard.

Thanks to Greg Cook for sharing some of the best protest signs from Saturday’s Boston/Cambridge Women’s March 2018: The People Persist.

Netflix brings back Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

What is old is new again; first it was announced that Will & Grace would return to NBC then ABC said it was bringing back its popular show Roseanne. Now Netflix has revived the Bravo TV series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but this time with a new cast and in a new city.

Moving from the more politically progressive northeast this new cast will be based in Atlanta and roam Dixie. The new Fab Five includes Bobby Berk as the show’s design expert; Karamo Brown will be the cast’s cultural attache (so to speak); Antoni Porowski will manage all things related to food and wine; Jonathan Van Ness is responsible for personal grooming; and Tan France will lead the charge in the fashion department.

The Netflix teaser that dropped earlier this week opens with the lines, “The original show was fighting for tolerance. Our fight is for acceptance.” I’m not sure I really agree with that but you get the gist of this light-hearted formulaic series that will try to make America a little more accepting (and hopefully more polite) – one makeover at a time.

Check’em out on Netflix here: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

Shakespeare In Love will make you smile and laugh

SpeakEasy Stage, Boston Theater, BosArts

Shakespeare in Love || Photo by Nile Hawver / Nile Scott Shots

Set in the larger and more comfortable Wimberly Theater at the Calderwood Pavilion, SpeakEasy uses the stage brilliantly to recreate a 16th Century theater in London that effectively transitions from playhouse to bar to bedroom with the same ease as the co-leads who portray their parts. Lead roles are played by the handsome Netwon native George Olesky and the beautiful Jennifer Ellis who I loved in SpeakEasy’s spring 2017 production of The Bridges of Madison County.

The play is rife with witty lines that reference Shakespeare plays and funny scenarios; like in the beginning of the play depicting the Bard as suffering from writer’s bloc and incapable of writing even a sonnet until he unwittingly meets his Juliet. One needn’t be a fan of Shakespeare to appreciate the humor anymore than one needed to know it to enjoy the movie, but it certainly did make me laugh hearing famous lines turned on their head like using one of Lady MacBeth’s most guilt-ridden lines as a humorous punch line for a dog.

Tickets to see Shakespeare In Love are reasonably priced with tickets starting at $25.00. Performances run Wednesday thru Sunday until February 10th.

Sound like a great show but don’t live in Boston? The SpeakEasy Stage joins fourteen other theater companies in the United States, that have productions of this comedy in their 2017 / 2018 season, making Shakespeare In Love the most produced show in the country so check your local theater companies – who knows? Perhaps a production of this comedy is taking place nearby.

Vintage gay

beach, kikiThis week’s vintage gay post which is nearly 100 years old comes from the homohistory blog. Unfortunately, I don’t know where this was taken.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Pew Research political typology quiz

Are you a core conservative, solid liberal or somewhere in between? Take Pew Research’s quiz to see which political typology group is your best match

Pew Research has an online survey to help evaluate what political group matches your political philosophy. It was created and based on a survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults. I will admit I did not agree with many of the answers to the questions, which were too black and white, and I often had to choose between which answer I disagreed with less, but it was interesting all the same. Pew Research, political typology quizAfter taking Pew’s survey I received a rating of “Solid Liberal” (no surprise to me or those who know me). According to Pew only about 16% of America identify as Solid Liberals. Characteristics of this political group are steadfast advocates for social safety nets; they think immigrants are an important part of what makes America unique and great; support social issues and believe homosexuality should be accepted by society.  If you’d like to take this online quiz link here
