Saturday’s annual White Party in Provincetown was masterfully captured by David Cox from Droning Provincetown.
Back in June, a coffee house / tea house in Somersworth, NH (a town of ~11,000 residents sandwiched between Portsmouth and Rochester, NH) raised some eyebrows with their roadside billboard (shown below). The billboard ended up creating quite a bit of controversy in stodgy NH but it also gained a fair bit of praise and was noted on social media by yours truly and many others.
While I’ve yet to visit, the next time Sergio and I drive up to visit my parents on Lake Winnipesaukee we are definitely going to make a detour to check out this self proclaimed “oasis of queer, hipster coffee, tea and pastry goodness”. I grew up in NH and could have never imagined such a cafe – let alone a provocative, gender-bending billboard. If you are saddened by the current political climate and divisiveness, look to this group of feisty entrepreneurs for inspiration because a little bit of fierce can go a long way.
Should you find yourself in the area and want to check out this colorful cafe they are open six days a week (every day except for Tuesday) at 69 High Street in Somersworth, NH or online at teatotallerteahouse.com.
If you like this week’s Bonus Fur post and live in Boston, I’d suggest you head to Fascination which takes place the first and last Friday of each month at Jacques in Bay Village. There is more information about tonight’s event here: First Friday Fascination.
September brings back more than tens of thousands of students to Boston. Most of Boston’s local theater companies return with new productions and this year local theater companies have an impressive line up.
Probably the best known local theater The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) continues to raise the bar with engaging shows and often times big name actors. September 9th is the opening for a new play from the ART called, WARHOLCAPOTE.
The play is based on the well documented friendship between Andy Warhol and Truman Capote. Using the hundreds of hours in conversation (some of it published), the ART has created the play, WARHOLCAPOTE.
The Lyric Stage Co. of Boston present the musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Performances start tonight, Friday, September 1st and run through October 8th at their theater in the Back Bay. Tickets Available Here.
Over in Cambridge Central Square Theater will open their new season with Constellations. A mesmerizing romantic journey that looks at the infinite possibilities directed by Scott Edmiston, six-time Elliot Norton Award-winner for Outstanding Director. The show runs from Thursday, September 7th through October 8th. Tickets Available Here.
The SpeakEasy Stage Company opens in September with Men On Boats. Opening September 8th the show tells the story of an actual 1869 expedition led by John Wesley Powell to chart the Colorado River. Comical but never camp, pointed but never political, this rousing historical saga is a provocative meditation on gender and historical memory that offers a new lens through which to view our shared past. Tickets Available Here.
Next week on Friday, September 8th The Huntington Theatre opens their season with the musical, Merrily We Roll Along, with music from Stephen Sondheim. Be sure to get your tickets before the musical closes on Sunday, October 15th. Tickets Available Here.
Zeitgeist Stage Company presents, Faceless, a drama about 18 year-old Susie Glenn who is on trial for conspiring to commit acts of terrorism, and recent Harvard Law grad and practicing Muslim, Claire Fathi, who has been brought on to prosecute her. The play opens on Friday, September 15 and runs through October 7th. Tickets Available Here.
The theater companies shared above are just a sampling of locally produced shows underway or soon to open. Check out one or more of these productions and support the local arts scene. You’ll be impressed by the caliber of talent, the variety of shows and how much more affordable these tickets are than the national traveling productions playing in the Theater District.

The city of Boston would like to celebrate the end of summer with a harbor fireworks show by Boston Harbor Now; suggested public viewing locations include the Christopher Columbus Park in the North End, Piers Park in East Boston and Fan Pier in the Seaport.
This is the fifth year fireworks over Boston Harbor will take place this evening at sunset. For more details visit 5th Annual Illuminate the Harbor Boston Harbor Fireworks.
The current political climate has become increasingly poisonous and I wanted to share an inspiring photograph from the 1st National March for LGBT rights that took place in 1979. The LGBT community was organizing and building a voice that would help it flex its political muscle. Something that would be desperately needed in just a few years when the AIDS epidemic blew up. Ronald Reagan and all of the US Congress (Democrats and Republicans alike) would turn their backs on our community while tens of thousands of young men succumbed to the “Gay Cancer” as it was called.
This past Spring Boston’s LGBTQ Film Festival a.k.a. Wicked Queer, showcased the Portuguese film, The Ornithologist. The film returns to the Boston area and will play at The Brattle Theatre starting Friday, Sept. 1st.
You can purchase your tickets from the Brattle online, here.
ABOUT THE ORNITHOLOGIST: Director João Pedro Rodrigues reimagines the myth of Saint Anthony of Padua as a modern-day parable of sexual and spiritual transcendence. On a bird-watching expedition in the remote wilderness, Fernando (Paul Hamy) capsizes and loses his bearings. His ensuing odyssey, both intensely physical and wildly metaphysical, involves sadistic Chinese pilgrims, a deaf-mute shepherd named Jesus, pagan tribes, Amazons on horseback, and a glorious variety of feathered friends.

Guys who live in Boston will likely know or recognize Stephen and David St. Russell. They are an outgoing and friendly couple who bought a fixer-upper in Dorchester earlier this year.
Stephen and David are in the midst of turning a 19th century Victorian house that was in some serious need of TLC into their dream home. Like all good Millennials they have set up a website to share their story, which you can see here, and are using Instagram to document the house’s transformation.
It is far more fun following these two on Instagram than any faux-reality show I’ve seen on HGTV.
Follow these two on Instagram here, instagram.com/place.st.russell.
