Temptation Tuesday
Sandra Bullock’s film The Heat filming in South End
The Heat has been filming in and around Boston for quite a few months. Earlier today we received notice that the filming which has gone on all around the area will be coming to my neighborhood (actually my street to be specific).
Filming is expected to occur Tuesday and Wednesday, August 28 – 29th.

MassEquality Taste of Provincetown
This past Saturday I was an invited guest of MassEquality to come and enjoy food and drink from 30 Cape Cod restaurants. The fact the event ran so smoothly and was so enjoyable is credit to the Host Committee.
The crowd delighted in the cooking competition, which pitched two chefs in a head-to-head showdown. Your’s truly was one of three judges who sampled the lobster plate that was created. The entire evening was great fun. I’d strongly suggest putting on your calendar for 2013.
dbar tea dance
The dbar “Opening Day” tea dance to benefit The Boston Living Center was held yesterday and judging by the size of the crowd it looks like a lot of money was raised to benefit this very worthwhile local non-profit.
The weather was beautiful, Gay Jim from KISS 108 was on hand to play great music, and everyone seemed to be in a fantastic mood (you would have never guessed Monday was just around the corner).

Wrong Direction’s “Disclosure”
This video started to go viral on many gay blogs last week when it was released, but I thought I’d hold off and share it with you today; the first day of the Republican Party’s National Convention. This catchy song from Wrong Direction called “Disclosure” is a parody based on One Direction’s hit song, “What Makes You Beautiful”.
My favorite line is when they croon, Romney you lie to voters like nobody else. I have a unique perspective on this since I’ve been watching this man campaign in Massachusetts in nearly every election cycle since the early 1990s – even though he continues to maintain he’s not a “career politician”. Here is a photograph of me with Taylor on Saturday night in Provincetown. This is what we would look like if either of us could grow a mustache. After donning the faux-stache I had an overwhelming desire to speak with a Spanish accent and order a bottle of rioja.
Boston needs more taxis
A recent Boston Globe story about the rising cost of Taxi Medallions (which is essentially a license that allows drivers to operate taxi cabs), caught my attention when it shared this little tid bit – Boston has capped the number of taxis at 1,825.
Although I’m the first to clamor for more oversight and regulation, I am also more than willing to admit that not all regulation makes sense. For example, having less than 2,000 cabs in a city like Boston seems asinine. The result of these limitations has two immediate consequences for consumers.
1) The ratio of cabs to consumers in Boston is 1 to 340 (in D.C. it is 1 to 90). This makes it virtually impossible to get a cab if there is a large convention, bad weather or if you don’t live on a busy downtown street.
2) The industry is increasingly less profitable for new businesses. A Medallion license in Boston now runs $400,000 (you need one medallion for each taxi cab). So now the system really only serves to protect the interests of a few taxi companies rather than the citizens those taxis were intended to serve.
I wish Boston would shun this system and find a better way to regulate taxis in the city or at a minimum help the city and its residents by doubling the number of taxi medallions to bring down the cost and add more cabs to the streets of Boston.

Last summer I wrote This is him and while visiting Ptown this past weekend a reader I met mentioned how much they enjoyed the story so I thought I’d re-post.
Dan Savage poignant “It Gets Better Campaign” came about because of a grim reality regarding how marginalized gay and lesbian kids feel and the bullying that further isolates them. This past weekend, I was reminded of the happier side of Dan Savage’s campaign – the part that addresses “The Better”…
There is a young man (18 years old to be exact) who lives in my complex. At first glance he looks like a tough city kid. His Boston accent, stocky build which mimics his gigantic father and cigarette permanently hanging from his lips makes him look anything like his friendly, easy-going personality. This kid (let’s call him Adam), comes from a solid blue collar, take no crap kind of family. We’ve been neighbors for a few years now and while I don’t know his whole story, I do know that he’s gay.
As far as I was aware, he was closeted (maybe he still is). However, the other day he told me with quite a bit of pride that his boyfriend was coming to visit him. I was happy for him and told him so, but it wasn’t until I saw him later this weekend that I realized how happy. On Sunday afternoon as my partner and I were driving through the courtyard we looked up and saw Adam with a friend. When Adam recognized us he lit up and started shouting as loud as he could pointing to the other young man. “This is Him!” I think he must have said it 2-3 more times at the top of his lungs. He was so excited and proud. And seeing this young, tough-kid from Boston all excited to be with his boyfriend and be shouting it for all the world to hear made me think you know what Dan Savage is right, it does get better. And if you’re lucky like Adam – you don’t have to wait that long to realize it.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis may have died nearly a decade ago twenty years ago but she is still missed. Well that is how I feel anyway.

Don’t laugh this off. It is only a matter of time before marketing schmucks like me convince you to spend your money on buying canned air from some of your favorite cities. Once upon a time (not so long ago) the idea of buying bottled water would have seemed equally bizarre.
Red Bull cliff diving competition in Boston later today

The 2012 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series returns to Boston Harbor today. As they did last year, Red Bull Cliff Divers will climb to the top of the Institute of Contemporary Art building on Fan Pier and dive from a 92′ platform into Boston Harbor.
