Snow My God! (SMG!)

Boston is in the midst of its largest snow storm of the season, but I’m quite comfy in my 4th floor apartment looking out at the blizzard (pronounced here as blizzaahhd). In my previous post, I was a victim of a random act of kindness I alluded to some good fortune. Yesterday, we were offered a spot in a parking garage for our car; thus avoiding the need to dig out our car from the storm. Looking outside – I can’t tell you how happy I am knowing the silver bullet (my nickname for our 2001 Golf) is safey tucked away in our building’s parking garage.

I started taking pictures at 9:00am of Harrison Avenue (near Gaslight Brasserie) and will continue to add to this post through the day. I live in a downtown neighborhood which is normally quite busy with pedestrians and traffic, but not today. A snow emergency was in effect as of 9:00pm Tuesday to ensure the streets would be clear for the snow plows. School was cancelled and most employers asked employees to work from home to avoid any potential accidents.

Boston No Pants Subway Ride Video

All day Monday, I received emails from friends who had seen my partner, Sergio, on the local news as they reported about this event / prank. One friend called me to let me know yours truly was gracing the pages of the Boston Metro (a free paper mostly read by those who ride the MBTA – Boston’s public transit system). I’ve taken some ribbing for my choice of socks and shoes, but I needed something that was comfortable and warm so I stand by my choice.

I know that WGB and Universal Hub both posted my video on their sites, which in part have helped to contribute to more than 2,500 views in the first 24-hours. If you see this posted on other sites, let me know so I may contact the person and say “thank you”. I’m still a not on facebook so should you see this posted on someone’s page – say thanks to them on my behalf.

Boston No Pants Subway Ride 2011

The Boston Society of Spontaneity hosted their annual “No Pants Subway Ride” this afternoon, and on a whim I joined with my partner. I’ve never had so much fun on the T (Boston’s metro system – MBTA).

Check out my video clip.

No Pants Subway Ride Boston 2011

Boston’s No Pants Subway Ride takes place this Sunday, January 9th at 2pm.

The event, which started in NYC, now takes place in many cities (including Boston) so if you happen to be on the metro with people in their boxers on Sunday don’t be caught off guard.

You can read more about the 2011 No Pants Subway Ride Boston here. The weather in Boston will be freezing (literally), but I’m flirting with the idea of hopping on the “T” (Boston’s metro) with no pants – we’ll see.

Restaurant Review: Lucca

Lucca is an Italian restaurant in the North End that opened a second location last year in the Back Bay (where I ate). Dinner for two (appetizers, main dishes and a shared dessert – not including drinks or tip) is ~ $85.00. However, a number of pasta plates on the bar menu, which is slightly different from the main dining room can be ordered as half-portions which further reduces the average bill.

Sitting at the bar (as I did) provides a different dining experience than in the main dining room. However, the bartender’s suggestions (e.g. ordering a ½ portion of pasta and validating the starter I wanted) were spot on so I have to give credit for her knowledge and suggestions. Moreover, my food arrived promptly (along with a delicious bread basket w/ hummus and olive oil), and throughout my meal I was never rushed or jostled. These things may sound inconsequential but they impact my dining experience and matter to me.Both the bar and the main dining room are beautiful and provide an impressive backdrop to the main event (the food), which is excellent. The burrata cheese in my first plate melted in my mouth and was so delicious I could have this every night and not get bored for at least a year. Because Bolognese sauces tend to be quite heavy, I opted for the ½ portion which proved to be the perfect amount for me – esp. since I was busy inhaling the entire bread basket. The sauce was well seasoned and complimented the pasta which was served (as I like) al dente. This was my first time dining here, but it will not be my last. Hungry for Italian and want to try some place in the BackBay – try out Lucca.

First plate: Bibb lettuce, w/ burrata cheese, candied pine nuts, truffle vinaigrette, and shallots $13

Second plate: Rigatoni w/ Bolognese sauce (½ order) $10

Show Tune Tuesday @dbar

For those not familiar with Boston’s gay scene, every Tuesday there is a bar in Dorchester (a Boston neighborhood) that plays show tunes. It has become something of an unspoken tradition that my friend Paul and I meet there on the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years.
Last night’s Show Tune Tuesday crowd I was surprised that this year was less crowded, but it did not impact the fun we had chatting with everyone, and it allowed all my requests to be played 🙂 When the DJ played Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked it was a sight to behold. Rarely do so many people sing with such reckless abandon in public – its really a something to see. Dbar had a slight technical malfunction last night around 10ish when their system died and everything had to revert to cash. Kudos to Brit and the other bartenders who did their best to keep everyone laughing and having a good time. dbar’s handsome bartenders As you can see from the Cazwell video, not all songs are from showtunes, but mind you songs from Hedwig, Hairspray, Grease, The Little Mermaid, several numbers from this season’s Glee episodes all received air time. Should you live in Boston or visit and want to have fun midweek – this is the bar to check out.

Restaurant Review: Erbaluce

Erbaluce is located in the building that formerly was home to Dedo in Boston’s Bay Village neighborhood. Dinner for two with appetizers, main dishes and dessert not including drinks or tip will run approximately $100.

The restaurant’s menu cannot be found online because it changes daily, but its unmistakably Italian, including several pastas and main course dinner plates each night. The kitchen takes traditional Italian fare and turns it on its head by including ingredients not often pared but are delicious all the same.

Food and service at this restaurant was flawless. The wait staff was very knowledgeable and helpful with food and wine selection, plates were only taken once everyone was finished and requests were all managed with ease. However, despite the interesting menu, delicious food, and good service, I’m not certain I will rush back to this restaurant. Detracting from the dining experience was the poor condition and layout of the dining room. The building is in a serious need of a facelift; the carpeting is worn and stained, the room was chilled every time the front door opened and we were provided a point-blank view of the hectic and unattractive kitchen which is essentially open to view in the main dining area. These physical detractions in the end ultimately impact one’s dining experience because they serve both to disappoint and distract.

There are an abundance of Italian restaurants in Boston that provide interesting menus and solid service in the same price range. I’d love to come back to Erbaluce if the building is remodeled and cleaned up a bit because menu options are certainly intriguing and absolutely worth trying.

First Plate: Speck with native apples, seasame and mint $14
Fettucini with roasted beats, sage and smoked prosciutto $22

2010 Santa Speedo Run video makes the rounds

Hello All – I’m taking a moment to brag about my Santa Speedo Run video which has been picked up by a number of different blogs lately. Dave over at WGB really got the ball rolling for me by posting my video and linking back to my little corner of the internet – thanks Dave.

Earlier today, I found out that Instinct Magazine picked up WGBs pictures and my video, which you can see here.

DanNation also picked up my clip and added a witty headline, which you can see here.

And this evening I came home from the gym to read that the Towleroad has posted my video.

I’m so happy everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and thanks to the handsome guy in his plaid underwear and all the others who offered to pose.

Boston Toys for Joys (T4J) Party

The second annual Toys for Joys (T4J) party was tonight in Southie at the Artist for Humanity building. The party was every bit as fun as last year and a bit better run with more bartenders serving very strong drinks and plenty of food although much of it was overlooked as the men (the crowd is 90% gay) fixated on cocktails.

In addition to the pictures I’ve included below, here is my debut as movie editor, piecing together video clips from all the fun earlier today.

Boston Santa Speedo Run 2010

Watch the 2-minute 2010 Santa Speedo Run VideoThe Boston Santa Speedo Run started in Boston in 2000 and quickly became a Christmas tradition that is now copied in a handful of cities through out North America to raise money for charity.

Each year I go down to Boston’s BackBay neighborhood to watch, laugh and mingle with the crowd of spectators which rivals (if not dwarfs those running). The celebration commences and concludes at Lir on Boylston Street – located across from the Hynes and near the Prudential Mall entrance. Runners line up outside the bar and run a brisk 1 mile up parts of Boylston and Newbury Street much to the delight and surprise of visitors doing holiday shopping. Below I’ve included some pictures from this year’s race. Click on any of the photos to enlarge.

Do you drive to work?

Ouch! Although I work from home now, I’ve walked to and from work since 1998. This not only makes me happier, but probably makes the roads of Boston a safer place. As a result, I’m somewhat insulated and unaware of the rising cost of gasoline. Do you drive to work? How much money do you spend (on average) per week?

The chart above displays the average cost of gasoline per gallon in MA. You can go to The Boston Globe to link to the data courtesy of the Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration and AAA – to see what the average price of gasoline costs in your state if you live in the US.

MFA Art of the Americas wing opens

The largest museum in Boston is the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). This week the museum unveils its massive new Art of the Americas wing, celebrating the completion of a $504 million expansion that took place during one of the country’s worst economic downturns.

More than 25,000 people made donations to make this wing a reality. The success of the MFA and widespread support is all the more impressive when you consider other, much larger cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago that have fallen shy of their own fund raising expansion campaigns.

The new addition is a striking four-story glass and granite structure filled with thousands of precious American artifacts and artworks and includes 53 new galleries with 51,000 square feet of new space.

The Boston Globe has included a floor-by-floor interactive map showcasing the new expansion which you can check out here. Definitely put visiting the new wing on your short list of “must see” during this winter when going outside is no fun.

Boston flag football team shows their moves

Teammates from the gay, Boston flag football league around this time last year tried to get Ellen DeGeneres’ attention by courting her with this cute video. They also taped a second video of them dancing all around Boston Logan Airport which you can view here.

I don’t believe they ever made it to the Ellen show, but kudos to them for trying. Enjoy the video, which runs about 90-seconds.
