Hub on Causeway

boston real estateWith all the construction happening in the South End and Seaport it can be easy to forget that the number of large construction projects happening in downtown Boston neighborhoods is astounding when compared to the city’s recent history.

One project that recently caught my attention is The Hub on Causeway, which is transforming the West End. The project includes office space, housing, hotel, retail and more:

  • more than 850,000+ square feet of office space
  • more than 200,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space, including a new grocery store and cinema
  • 540 new underground parking connected to an existing garage
  • 440 residential units
  • 260 room hotel

Boston real estate is really, really hot

In a new national survey from Urban Land Institute and PwC, Boston’s real estate market stands out. The survey, which ranks the hottest real estate markets in the U.S. saw Boston jump three spots to seventh in the nation.

Boston is at the center of a number of real estate trends like redevelopment,  technology, and sustainability.

Boston’s younger workforce, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) job market, sustainability efforts and redevelopment were all attributed to the rating jump. Boston scored exceptionally high when it comes to investors’ demand and local public-private investments.

In the survey, Dallas-Fort Worth ranked number 1 in the nation but Boston’s ranking as 7th best makes it the highest-ranked gateway market in the 2019 survey. You can see where other U.S. cities rank in this annual survey in the PwC report on page 37, Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2019.

BostonI don’t know much about this Boston-based photographer other than he takes beautiful photos of Boston and clearly has a passion for cars, because his Instagram feed is chock-full of both. I’m more partial to the night shots of Boston like this one of the Zakim Bridge shot at night.

Population growth in Boston results in a call for more housing by Mayor Walsh

Earlier this week the Boston Business Journal reported that Mayor Marty Walsh is looking to increase Boston’s housing goal from building 53,000 units to 69,000 new units (a 30% increase) by the year 2030.

Back in 2014 the city of Boston’s population was just under 660,000 and was expected to grow to just over 700,000 by 2030. But with Boston’s population growth has forced the city to revisit their initial forecast and revise their population estimate to approximately 760,000 residents by 2030.

The neighborhoods that the Mayor would like to focus on building new housing includes Sullivan Square, Newmarket and Widett Circle, the Fort Point Channel, Suffolk Downs, Readville and Beacon Yards. The mayor is also boosting the number of affordable-housing units goal to 15,820, which (if met) would mean Boston would have approximately 70,000 new income-restricted units.

One week ago today was a beach day

gay boston, M Street BeachToday is a beautiful fall day in Boston with big puffy white clouds and plenty of sun. Temperatures will flirt with the low 70s but most of the day will be in the mid and upper 60s. I’m not complaining, because I really do love this weather, but I can’t help but think back to last week’s final Kiki Beach of the 2018 Summer, which was sunny and in the low 80s.

I’ll miss you Kiki Beach and look forward to next summer, which is only 35 <gulp> weekends away. Maybe I need to book a few trips to Miami between now and then.

Nonstop service between Boston and Honolulu annouced

Late last week Hawaiian Airlines announced that it would start non-stop flights between Boston and Honolulu starting in April 2019, making Boston the second (New York City was first) East Coast hub to receive non-stop service on Hawaiian Airlines. The flight will also be the new longest domestic flight route in the United States with flights from HA to MA taking a little more than 10 hours and flights from MA to HA taking just under 12 hours (5,095 miles) .

The airline cited the fact that Boston is the largest U.S. travel market that currently does not receive non-stop service to Hawaii as a reason for rolling out this new service. An estimated 500 people fly between New England and Hawaii (approximately 60,000 visitors annually), which translates into ~$76 million in ticket sales for flights between the two city airports last year.

29th Boston Freedom Rally this weekend

legalize marijuana, boston marijuana festivalThe 29th Boston Freedom Rally is the largest annual gathering of pro-marijuana supporters on the East Coast and the second largest festival of it’s kind in the world, surpassed only by Seattle’s Hempfest. So if you find yourself near the Boston Common this weekend that hazy cloud hanging over the Common isn’t a weather pattern and is likely to make your head spin if you walk through the park. The rally officially kicks off this afternoon but is typically attended by most over the weekend from 12-8PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The rally is organized by the Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition (MassCANN), the state affiliate of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) also known as MassCann/NORML.

HUBweek 2018 announces some big names

boston innovationEarlier this summer I wrote a post about HUBweek, which will take place this year from October 8-14. The annual fall festival celebrates innovation  in art, science and technology when it takes over Boston’s City Hall Plaza later this year. Michael Bloomberg, Malcolm Gladwell, Deepak Chopra and Atul Gawande were previously announced as speakers at this year’s event. Earlier this week HUBweek organizers said NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd and Parkland  shooting survivor, David Hogg will also be coming to speak at the festival.

Dowd will take part in HUBweek Forums, discussing how the future will look in terms of everything from cities to health and medicine and Hogg, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and a co-founder of March for Our Lives, will be part of a HUBweek forum in Faneuil Hall on “the successes and challenges of the nationwide student-led movement to end gun violence”.

Many pf the events during HUBweek are free but they do fill up. Learn more here: hubweek.org

MBTA expands early morning and late night bus service

Boston public transportationStarting one month from today, bus service in Boston will get a significant boost. Earlier this summer the MBTA announced that they would add nearly 300 more bus trips each week, to give riders more options and to provide more access to Boston’s Logan Airport.

The additional trips will build on an extension of late-night/early-morning service that started this past April; some bus routes now start as early as 3:20AM. Late night service will roll-out on September 1 and ridership will be evaluated in December 2018, and again in April and June 2019 to determine if late night ridership warrants continued service or should be expanded. Assuming the late night service is a success that will mean parts of the city will have nearly 24-hour service; something that is long overdue in my opinion.

You can read the MBTA analysis and plans in their June 4th, Late Night Proposal and Early Morning Service Update.

Notable names coming to Boston Book Festival

Boston Book Festival, BBFThe Boston Book Festival (BBF) has shared its lineup of authors for this year’s festival which takes place Saturday, October 13th. Notable names scheduled to appear include John Kerry, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Anand Giridharadas, Michael Pollan and Justine Bateman (what do you suppose she’s been up to?).

The highlight for me would have to be the Saturday afternoon discussion between Kearns Goodwin and Kerry. Their conversation will take place just weeks before the midterm elections. Tickets to the discussion as well as to other 2018 BBF events will be available on the BBF website in early September.
