Mayor Bloomberg speaks out against Amendment One

“At our nation’s founding, African-Americans were held in bondage. Those without property could not vote. Catholics could not hold office. Women could not vote or hold office. And homosexuality was, in some places, a crime punishable by death.

Throughout our history, each and every generation has expanded upon the freedoms won by their parents and grandparents. Each and every generation has removed some barrier to full participation in the American dream. That work is not over. Far from it… Last week’s referendum banning same-sex marriage shows just how much more work needs to be done to ensure freedom and equality for all people.”

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, comments at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill commencement.

Rhode Island to recognize out-of-state Same Sex Marriages

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee signed an executive order today that recognizes same sex marriages performed in other states. The Governor’s actions gives gay couples the same rights as heterosexual ones when it comes to health insurance and a slew of other benefits.

Rhode Island’s only two border states, Massachusetts and Connecticut already recognize same sex marriage and since the state is so small it is assumed that many Ocean State residents may cross the border to marry until the time comes that Rhode Island takes that final all important step of not just recognizing but performing same sex marriages. Chafee’s executive order now makes Maine the only state in New England not to either recognize or allow same sex marriages.

Suddenly it makes sense

BosGuyI never felt the urge to train for a triathlon, but suddenly I’m starting to get a better appreciation for the sport.  Perhaps I should volunteer at the next triathlon here in Boston and offer to towel guys off or provide a nice back rub. What can I say? I’m a giver — err — I mean “givah“.

French swimmers model underwear

Hon

C’est Magnifique!

French underwear company Hom photographed eight French swimmers for their new underwear collection. There are more photographs on the OHLALA Mag blog where I first read the story as well as a two minute video on YouTube which I thought was less interesting but you can decide by watching here.

Hey US swimmers how about you step up to the plate and do the same? After seeing Ricky Berens swimming his Olympic qualifying race in Rome with a torn suit that exposed his bum this should seem tame.

It is raining here in Boston and through much of New England this morning. I hope this puts a smile on your face and brightens your day.

Huffington Post Gay Voices gives BosGuy a shout out

Boston Guy

My story from earlier this week Boston’s favorite same sex couple was picked up by Huffington Post Gay Voices. I was so surprised I snagged a screen capture, but you can see what Huffington Post Gay Voices had to say by reading their article Romeo and Juliet, ‘Gay’ Swan Couple to Return to Boston’s Public Garden May 1.

Unfortunately, bad weather on Tuesday, May 1st has delayed the momentous event.  Last heard, the Boston Parks Department was rescheduling the return of Romeo & Juliet for Friday, May 4th.

Queen Latifah headlines Long Beach Pride

BosGuyIs Grammy Award-winning rapper and Academy Award-nominee Queen Latifah setting the stage (so to speak) to come out later this month? Who can say, but she certainly has raised the eyebrows of many in the LGBT community by headlining this year’s annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival on May 19th.

According to the event website, this is Queen Latifah’s first ever engagement at a Pride celebration.  Although Latifah has never come out as a lesbian, I have always assumed she was part of our community and will continue to assume so until she comes out as heterosexual.  Either way, it is a coup for the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival to get such a big name and such a talented woman.

Robert Spitzer disavows homosexuality is a choice

Boston GuyRobert Spitzer is attributed with utilizing his position of power in the American Psychiatric Association to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in 1973. According to his profile on Wikipedia, he is described as “arguably the most influential psychiatrist of the 20th century.

Nearly 30 years later he would issue a controversial report in 2001 that would give credence to Reparative Sexual Therapy. His report, Can Some Gay Men and Lesbians Change Their Sexual Orientation? argued it was possible for highly motivated individuals to successfully change their sexual orientation.  However, last week Spitzer stunned both the LGBT community and those practicing Reparative Sexual Therapy when he said “his conclusions don’t hold water.” He went on in much greater detail about the report’s false conclusions, here.

Boston GuyThe magnitude of Spitzer’s disavowal cannot be overstated. Almost every anti-gay organization has used this study to justify their opposition to LGBT equality.   Focus on the Family’s Candi Cushman used the study to support the “Day of Dialogue,” which encourages Christian students to condemn gay classmates as a response to GLSEN’s “Day of Silence”.  The Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, National Organization for Marriage (NOM) all point to this report as proof that homosexuality is choice.  Jerry Falwell and other prominent preachers cite this study to defend their beliefs that God commands homosexuals to change or face damnation.

Suddenly it makes sense

Boston GuyOkay so this photo to encourage gay tourism in Paris may not be how the game of rugby is actually played (pity), but there is something incredibly distracting about this sport which has made me look beyond the annual Dieux du Stade photo shoots and video.

There is a gay rugby league in Boston.  Perhaps I should consider watching a game or two.  Below I’ve included a photo of something called a scrum.  Not really sure what the point is but it sure looks fun. Boston Guy

Boston’s favorite same sex couple

BosGuyTomorrow, Boston’s favorite same sex couple returns to the Boston Public Garden. Romeo & Juliet, the two graceful swans that make the pond in the Public Garden their home will be back on Tuesday, May 1st. Back in 2005 (just a year after same sex marriage was legalized in MA) it was learned that Romeo is in fact a female, which caused many conservatives who like to scream about how unnatural homosexuality is to cry foul (or was it fowl?)!

BosGuyAccording to the zoo keepers who watch over the couple in the winter months, the two swans have been nesting together for approximately 10 years so if you should find yourself in Boston, head over to the Boston Public Gardens and congratulate the city’s favorite lesbians on their longevity together. I’m not sure what the divorce rate among swans is like but they’ve certainly outlasted many of their human counterparts.

Men of Twitter

BosGuyEach Monday I feature men on Twitter who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. I refer to these posts as Men of Twitter.

Regular readers will notice that this week I have updated the Men of Twitter masthead. So this week I’m taking a hiatus from featuring new profiles and focusing on these four men in case you missed them before.

BosGuyFLHotty1 A little more than a year ago I featured Will who lives in Florida.  We actually ended up meeting last year in Provincetown, and I have to tell you he’s as handsome in person as he is in pictures but what you can’t tell from the picture is that he’s an absolute sweetheart too.

BosGuyTheNickAdams This handsome Broadway star, Nick Adams, was featured earlier this year in January. Considering the hectic nature of Nick’s schedule, I was really surprised how engaging he was on Twitter. Here’s to hoping for continued success for Nick Adams.

BosGuyJonathanAB was featured in 2011. This handsome guy with the killer abs is from Cape Town but now lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. I’ve always wanted to visit South Africa and following Jonathan makes me feel like I get a glimpse into life there.

BosGuyBertomio (A.K.A. Rob) was the first Men of Twitter profile I featured in 2012. I think readers will agree Rob has a killer smile and fantastic body. It turns out this Philly boy who now calls NYC home is also quite sweet and nice to chat with on Twitter.

I hope you like the new masthead and the men I’ve featured.  Be sure to come back again next Monday when my more traditional Men of Twitter posts will resume. If inclined you may follow me on twitter, @BosGuy.

Suddenly it makes sense

Last week I included a post by the same name but was referring to soccer.  This week I stumbled upon a photograph of college football players and I’m sure you can agree the appeal of this strange game all of a sudden makes perfect sense.

FOXY reborn tonight

Over marathon weekend last April I first wrote about two local DJs who were hosting fun dance nights in Cambridge on Sundays.  The two  DJs, James Cerne and Nathaniel Bluhm played a collection of mostly funky music and mixes from the 80s and 90s with an occasional nod to more contemporary hits.

No Cover or Attitude at Middlesex Lounge 10pm – 2am

At the start of this year James left Boston but Nathaniel has persevered and transformed FOXY which is now at the Middlesex Lounge at 315 Massachusetts Avenue.  Are you one of the many who will have tomorrow, Patriot’s Day, off? Check out tonight’s party, which runs from 10pm – 2am in Central Square.
