The South End Open Studios starts today and runs through Sunday from 11am – 6pm each day.
This is a great free event that brings thousands into the neighborhood so arrive early if driving so you may get parking. Most of the galleries (but not all) can be found between Waltham and Berkeley Streets on Washington Street and Harrison Avenue.

Designer Ben Pawle has developed a one-handed condom wrapper. I can’t imagine why it has taken this long to come up with such a sensible design.
His website says, “his condom addresses the need for newly sexually active young adults to avoid embarrassment when trying to don a ‘dom” Whatever the reason, it makes sense. Now it would be great if condom manufacturers would use this packaging.
September weather has continued to be warm and sunny making it easier to say good by to summer and hello to autumn. For sure the days are shorter but with weather like this who is going to complain?
For those new to Boston or with travel plans that will bring you here I wanted to share this BosTongue (LargeTony thought of that term) phrase, which you may be inclined to hear on days like this.
Wicked Gawjus refers to any weather above 70 degrees and below 85 degrees that has low humidity and plenty of sun. I would suggest you repeat the phrase out loud on your own a few times and practice using it in a sentence so you will be believable when you use it. For example…
I just picked up a 6-pack at Jimmy’s cornah packie, and now I’m heading down to Castle Island to drink ’em cuz its so wicked gawjus.
Michele Bachmann, is a US Congresswoman from Minnesota’s 6th district. For those unfamiliar with Rep. Bachmann, I would describe her as a whack-job. She speaks for the most conservative and xenophobic elements of the Republican Party.
Earlier this week Minnesota Public Radio reported Bachmann’s race for re-election was not going smoothly. She is still considered likely to win, but news the Democrat is closing the gap is good news. Do you live in Minnesota or know someone who does? Share this facebook link from the Democrat running to unseat Bachmann.
On Tuesday The U.S. Department of Justice asked theSupreme Court to consider two additional legal challenges to a the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal law defining marriage between a man and a woman.
One of the cases submitted involves 83-year old Edie Windsor (shown below) of New York, who married her partner, Thea Spyer, in Canada in 2007. After Spyer died, Windsor had to pay more than $363,000 in U.S. federal estate taxes, which she would not have had to pay if her same-sex marriage had been legally recognized.
A U.S. District Court judge in Manhattan ruled in Windsor’s favor, finding DOMA discriminates against married same-sex couples. Federal courts in California and Massachusetts also have found the DOMA unconstitutional. Read the full report from Yahoo News here.
Instead of lamenting the passing of the Purple Shamrock, The Glynn Hospitality Group, which owns the Purple Shamrock, hosted an Irish Wake today. An empty casket, trailed by bag pipers paraded from The Black Rose Pub to a final resting place inside the Purple Shamrock.
Only in Boston are pubs elevated so highly. I missed the wake but from what I understand, despite taking place during the middle of the day, it was well attended. I’ve not been to The Shamrock in quite a few years, but it does have the distinction of being where I celebrated my 21st birthday (all those years ago).

Saturday, September 15 from 12 – 6PM at Boston Common
Some of the best people watching in Boston will take place this weekend on the Boston Common when tens of thousands come together for Boston’s 23rd Freedom Rally, often referred to as Hempfest.
The afternoon event includes vendors, music, plenty of food and a line up of speakers including Congressman Barney Frank (MA). If you’re new to Boston or never have been, this is a fun, free event that is worth checking out and guaranteed to give you a good chuckle or two.
You may learn more about this event here. The Boston Freedom Rally strives to educate people about marijuana and to build a consensus for a more rational public policy regarding all uses of the cannabis plant.
