Cinqo de Mayo

BosGuyThis holiday is often confused with Mexican independence (which is actually in September), but Cinqo de Mayo is really more a reflection of Mexican heritage and pride and a testament to how important this group is in the U.S.

The US is home to the second largest Mexican community in the world with 17 million documented and illegal Mexicans living here.  That’s a lot of Mexican heritage and pride so feel free to celebrate. Just like everyone’s a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day – everyone (at least in the US) is a little bit Mexican today so cheers.

A view of Back Bay

One of Boston’s prettiest neighborhoods is Back Bay. It is a testament to  the city of Boston and residents that such an important commercial center so full of businesses and restaurants also remains one of the best preserved examples of 19th century urban design filled with beautiful rows of Victorian brownstones to live in and call home.BosGuy

You don’t need to be a fan of architecture to appreciate the design and buildings.  Modern examples like I.M. Pei’s famous John Hancock Tower literally reflecting the city laid out before it.  Below I’ve included photos of a few buildings you might see if you were to stroll through Back Bay or dine out al fresco at one of the hundreds of restaurants located in this downtown neighborhood. BosGuyWill you be coming to Boston for work or pleasure anytime soon?

So what are your plans?

Boston GuyWhat will you be doing tonight? There’s plenty happening here in Boston if you are looking for something fun to do. Here are a few suggestions you may not have thought of checking out.

GQB – Guerilla Queer Bar will be gathering at Jose McIntyre’s at 160 Milk Street tonight (starting at 9pm).  GQB meets the first Friday of each month in a bar not traditionally gay. There are Guerilla Queer Bar nights in more than 20 cities through out the United States.  www.bostonguerrilla.com

First Fridays – The first Friday of each month the SoWa Artists Guild in the South End host “First Fridays”.  Artists at 450 Harrison Avenue open their studios from 5:00-9:00pm.  Walk through the studios, meet the artists and check out their work.

Junk – Want a change of pace; meet new people? Cross the river to Harvard Square and go to the Oberon where DJ Nathaniel Bluhm will be playing such good music you’ll work yourself into a sweat in no time. Be sure to stay to see Ms Brihanna Stone emcee a vicious drag show. More info here.

MFA Beach Party – The Museum of Fine Arts “First Friday” features live music, tapas and cash bar. To attend you only need to purchase a ticket to the museum. Beach themed attire is encouraged, but I’d stick to something a bit more seasonal considering the temps.

Mr. Dick’s – Want to get out and shake your thang but want to stay in town? Have you checked out Mr. Dick’s Night at Bijou – 51 Stuart Street in the Theater District? The party starts to get fun after 12Am. More info here.

Boston GuyThe face on this poor kid is priceless. One can only imagine how much therapy this little stroll has now required.

Furry Friday

BosGuyThis week’s Furry Friday post was inspired by an April post from Mark who writes the blog, Tales of the Sissy.  The minute I saw this guy I knew he’d be making an appearance and said as much in the comment section to Mark.  Thanks again for bringing him to my attention.

BosGuy brain teaser

Boston GuyThis week’s riddle is fairly straightforward, but I found it completely maddening and had to give up. Perhaps you’ll fare better.  Share it with friends or colleagues at work and see if you can figure it out.

I will post the answer in the comment section of this post later this afternoon.  I hope you enjoy this week’s challenge.

If you take the letters ERGRO and put the same three letters in front and following them you will form a common English word.   What are those three letters and what is the word it creates?

Richard Grenell resigns from Romney Campaign

BosGuyRichard Grenell was hired as Mitt Romney’s foreign policy spokesperson  three weeks ago.  His hiring caused immediate controversy with conservatives who did not like the fact that he was gay and in favor of same sex relationships.  With the conservative base in an uproar, Grenell tendered his resignation this week.

Although the Romney campaign has expressed disappointment and said they tried to dissuade Grenell from resigning, the NYT reports, “when he (Grenell) had sought forceful support from those who had entrusted him with a major role, the campaign seemed to be focused, instead, on quieting a political storm that could detract from Mr. Romney’s message and his appeal to a crucial constituency.”

Hardly shocking considering Romney’s pandering

I don’t want to paint Grenell as a hapless victim.  He’s taken swipes at high profile leaders in the Republican party and apparently has quite a sharp tongue so no doubt some of the controversy was manufactured political payback.  However, if you happen to be a gay man it is hard not to see the venom that the Republican base spewed because this qualified, knowledgeable individual is gay and would like to be able to marry his spouse.  This party sickens me.

New Repertory Theatre Little Shop of Horrors

New Repertory TheatreI recently attended the opening night performance of the New Repertory Theatre production of Little Shop of Horrors.  This was  my first visit to the theater company in Watertown. Normally, I don’t travel much beyond Cambridge, but I’m really pleased I did.  The theater company has a lovely home in the Arsenal Center for the Arts (by the Arsenal Mall), and was surprisingly easy to get to.

I anticipate the New Repertory Theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors will be quite successful.  The rock musical is filled with songs inspired by the sounds of early Motown and has more than its share of outrageously funny scenes that will appeal to a wide audience.

The Rep’s designers did a great job building the set and the ensemble works well together.  I was particularly taken by Susan Molloy who plays the role of Audrey. Her voice, comedic timing and all round acting was fantastic. Personal favorites where when she sang “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly Seymour“.

With several dining options near the theater and plenty of free parking there really is no excuse not to check out Little Shop of Horrors (prices range $28-$58) so snap up your tickets before this show passes you by. Little Shop of Horrors runs through Sunday, May 20th.

Crewmen and Company

BosGuyI love this.  While I’m sure these guys get their share of bachelorette parties, they would do good business working gay cocktail parties here in Boston.  Unfortunately, Crewmen & Company is only in Toronto, although they are expanding to Montreal soon. Maybe Boston can be next?  Just a suggestion guys.

Anyone familiar with this company or used them before?

I love how they describe their services “We are charming, attractive, topless waiters and bartenders. We come in two flavors: Classy and Sassy. As hired help we take the pressure off hosting an event and we do it with a smile.” While their current staff is quite handsome, they definitely err on the side of twink. Maybe overtime they can expand and find guys more in line with my Furry Friday types.

Huffington Post Gay Voices gives BosGuy a shout out

Boston Guy

My story from earlier this week Boston’s favorite same sex couple was picked up by Huffington Post Gay Voices. I was so surprised I snagged a screen capture, but you can see what Huffington Post Gay Voices had to say by reading their article Romeo and Juliet, ‘Gay’ Swan Couple to Return to Boston’s Public Garden May 1.

Unfortunately, bad weather on Tuesday, May 1st has delayed the momentous event.  Last heard, the Boston Parks Department was rescheduling the return of Romeo & Juliet for Friday, May 4th.

Queen Latifah headlines Long Beach Pride

BosGuyIs Grammy Award-winning rapper and Academy Award-nominee Queen Latifah setting the stage (so to speak) to come out later this month? Who can say, but she certainly has raised the eyebrows of many in the LGBT community by headlining this year’s annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival on May 19th.

According to the event website, this is Queen Latifah’s first ever engagement at a Pride celebration.  Although Latifah has never come out as a lesbian, I have always assumed she was part of our community and will continue to assume so until she comes out as heterosexual.  Either way, it is a coup for the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival to get such a big name and such a talented woman.
