Boxers to open in Philadelphia

Gay barsBoxers, a gay sports bar with two locations in New York City, announced last week that they will open a third location in Philadelphia.  The news comes on the heels of Fritz Boston – Boston’s only truly gay sports bar – closing.

My post this past October, Farewell to Fritz, caused a huge uproar resulting in several thousand shares on Facebook (a record for this blog). Time will tell what Fritz 2.0 (the new name will be  The Trophy Room) will look like and if it will be a gay or gay friendly bar (by the way there is a HUGE difference in this blogger’s mind).

I would like to court the owners of Boxers NYC, Bob Fluet and Robert Hynds, to look East and consider a location here in Boston. We have an affluent, sports-minded gay community that I think would welcome them with open arms.  I love  gay sports bars and if Boxers decides Boston isn’t in the cards, I’d like to welcome Gym Sports Bar that has locations in NYC and LA.  I want you here… Boston wants you here.

Martin Luther King Day

MLK quote hope smallerIn lieu of my weekly Monday Blues post, I thought I’d insert this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. It is one of my favorite quotes from Dr. King. Unlike virtually everyone I know here in Boston, I’m actually working today so enjoy the day for me.

HBO new series Looking premieres tonight

gay televisionHBO’s newest series, Looking, supposedly will share the unfiltered experiences of three close friends living in modern-day San Francisco. The trio’s stories intertwine and unspool dramatically as they search for happiness and intimacy.

Looking premieres tonight at 10:30 p.m. on HBO.  Will you be looking watching?

Spencer Trappist Ale

Spencer Trappist AleWhen people think of local brewers, Sam Adams most likely comes to mind although the region does have an excellent collection of  brewers that deserve attention.  Last weekend NPR reported that there is one more brewery out in Western MA that may be worth checking out if only for the novelty. Spencer Trappist Ale has started selling their ale in Massachusetts this week, although I’ve not been able to identify where. UPDATE: In Boston, you can get this at Social Wines in Southie.

I associate the Trappist monks in Western MA with making delicious preserves so I’m intrigued. Apparently St. Joseph’s Abbey is only one out of ten Trappist abbeys worldwide to make ale and the only one outside of Europe.  More about this story can be read here.

New England trash talk: Rawr

New England PatriotsMuch thanks to my brother, Tim, who forward me this image on Monday morning.  I thought I’d save this for today. Enjoy the game if you’re into that sort of thing.  Personally, I’m more interested in this Denver fan.

600 Harrison Avenue moves forward

600 Harrison AvenueThe Cathedral of the Holy Cross which owns the parking lot at 600 Harrison Avenue has leased development rights to allow for 160 apartments (with 21 affordable units and 3,600 square feet of retail or restaurant space) as well as enough underground parking to accommodate the Cathedral’s existing 79 spaces and more for residents.

More Details about 600 Harrison Avenue Project

While board approval awaits, there has been little push back from the community. Hopefully this will greenlight the project and move it forward.

Garçon Français

Garcon FrancaisMy good friend and author of the visually stunning (not to mention delicious) blog, Frenchie and the Yankee, forward me the new video from Garçon Français, an underwear line from where else? France.

David mentioned this is his new favorite line of underwear.  I don’t own any, but I trust David’s taste and I love the promo video.  Check it out.

New lighting installation and parking in South End

MassDOT

Photo is courtesy of MassDOT

This past Friday afternoon, MASS DOT held a ceremony, showcasing new lighting installations that will be used to artistically illuminate the I-93 Viaduct.  Later this spring the space under Boston’s highway in the South End will open as a 400+ space 24-hour parking lot.  The improved lighting, and staffed parking lots is intended to help better connect adjoining South End and South Boston neighborhoods. This is such a smart, creative use of space under Boston’s Interstate 93. I love this project and am happy to see such a creative use of lighting. It almost makes the concrete underside of the expressway interesting. More on this here.

Have a great weekend

In Living ColorI’m heading out with my sister, Susan, and her friend, Olivia.   We’ll go out and grab a few drinks and people watch.  How will you be spending your Friday?

Date night option: The Color Purple

SpeakEasy StageLast weekend I had the opportunity to see SpeakEasy Stage’s production of The Color Purple.  This musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg.

While watching a musical about a poor African-American woman living in the South in the 1930s may not be the first thing you think of when planning a night out, trust me – you are going to love this show.  The SpeakEasy Stage has assembled a large, talented cast that belt out amazing music and draw you in, making the time fly. As you might expect, the show runs the emotional gamut and provides ample fodder for conversation later. For my more shallow readers, the incredibly handsome Jared Nixon (shown below) might be sufficient motivation.

I’ve included a video of one of my favorite songs from The Color Purple courtesy of Mercury Theater Chicago. The local production here at The SpeakEasy Stage runs through February 8th so get your tickets today.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserGive this week’s riddle a try and if you get stumped, share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This weeks riddle:  This week I’ve listed nonsensical letters, numbers and symbols that operate as four different codes. Can you crack them to tell me what each of these really say?  Good luck.

Guinness: Phones down, Bottoms up

BeerI’m not a Guinness drinker but I certainly do love their advertisements.  I think this latest campaign is fantastic; unintended double entendre and all.
