Hola from Cancun

travelJust as the temperatures started to drop in Boston earlier this week Sergio and I made a dash south of the border to Cancun, Mexico to celebrate a friend’s birthday so apologies if I’ve been slow to approve comments or share blog posts.

For those of you in Boston and elsewhere that is chilly, I’ll raise a margarita and toast you later this evening. Stay warm.

Vintage gay

I wish I knew more about these two men, because they look like they were a fun couple.  By their attire, I would assume the photo was taken in the late 180os or possibly the early 1900s; pre WWI.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Check out the blog It’s my husband and me

I love this blog that Jean-Paul writes about his life in London, living with his husband Guido. The fact that they live above the restaurant Guido owns, The Spanish Onion, makes for some great (and funny) posts that also appeals to the foodie in me. I’ve been reading Jean-Paul’s blog for so long now I feel like I know the both of these men even though I have no idea what they look like.

Jean-Paul’s blog is all writing – few if any visuals accompany his posts. His stories are mundane in the sense that they are so relatable, but his ability to tell a story is anything but run-of-the-mill and he makes for a great story teller. His most recent post (at the time I wrote this), Over You, is a great example. He talks about comforting a friend suffering from a broken heart, but the way he relays the drama unfolding is both so familiar and so comforting. After reading his posts, I often find myself thinking if Jean-Paul and Guido lived in Boston (or if we lived in London), we’d be friends – at least that is what I’d like to think.

Intrigued? Check out Jean-Paul’s blog, It’s My Husband and Me.

This week on Instagram: ciaotravels

VietnamInspired by the lead photo I used to showcase last week’s Instagram account, which collects and shares photos submitted by Portuguese speakers, this week I thought I’d share some of the beautiful photos shared by the young man who’s picture caught my attention. The photo above is of Halong Bay, Vietnam.

I have no idea who this young, handsome Brazilian is but I love seeing his photos from around the world and envy the fact that he has what appears to be so many amazing adventures. Like me, you can live vicariously through his posts.

Fox News ad revenue nose-dive

In full disclosure the information below comes from Media Matters, a progressive media watchdog so be mindful the source I’m quoting.

According to last week’s report from Media Matters, advertising revenue from September 2017 plummeted at Fox News. While a certain drop off is to be expected when you consider that last fall the country was embroiled in a very divisive national election, the numbers shared are still jaw-dropping – especially in relation to what Fox News competitors (CNN and MSNBC) show. Fox News advertising revenue

Media Matters speculates that this is in large part attributable to Hannity’s growing advertiser losses since his problems with advertisers leaving his show has been well documented. As companies become more focused on digital advertising and more protective of their brand, strongly partisan shows that play into conspiracy theories become less appealing. Ultimately it is bad for business.

Sean Hannity’s problems with advertisers mirrors Fox News

However, it is important to note (this wasn’t part of the Media Matters article) that Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity regularly have the highest ratings among the cable news networks so for those who would like to see these shows pulled it isn’t likely anytime soon.

Ultimately, I’d like to see all the cable networks stop being so slanted and move away from having panels with people shouting over each other but that’s probably never going to happen so I’ll just have to gloat be content with declining advertising revenues for the Murdoch family.

Boston Winter returns to Government Center

Boston is bringing back its 11,000 square foot skating path and winter village to to City Hall Plaza for the second consecutive year. The so called “Boston Winter” sponsored by Berkshire Bank will open November 24 and run through February.

This year’s festivities will include an 11,000-square-foot skating path; a replica of a Bavarian village; a Santa Claus house; a Christmas tree maze; and something called Vinopolis, which the city describes as“an interactive wine and beer experience.” There will also be 85 chalets for food and tchotchke vendors. According to City Hall, last year’s Boston Winter drew more than 300,000 visitors, including one very happy Sergio. You can learn more about this year’s “Boston Winter” here.

Movie review: Call Me By Your Name

gay literatureLast month I was invited to special screening of the book recently turned into a movie, Call Me By Your Name.  Below is a brief description of the story which remains ever so faithful to the book.

Movie Synopsis: It’s the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa  living with his parents. Elio’s father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, both love and dote on their only child. Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of Northern Italy, Elio and Oliver discover something in themselves that will alter their lives forever.

For those of you familiar with the book by André Aciman, the storyline will sound very familiar. For those who love the book, the good news is the movie does not disappoint. It comes to life in this coming of age story that touched me each time I read the book and did so again in the movie theater. It is ripe with scenes from the book like the infamous moment with the peach and the father son  tête-à-tête near the end of the movie is even more touching when viewed and Oscar worthy in my opinion.  The ending changes slightly and for once I side with the movie (not the book) preferring how the director Luca Guadagnino chose to close the movie with a very emotional Elio who’s feelings flit across his face as the movie credits roll on the screen.

Call Me By Your Name will be released in the United States on November 24th and I strongly encourage you to see it.
