ImageSpeakEasy Stage presents Bad Jews
Verbal sparring dark comedy, Bad Jews, will leave you speechless
Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon and directed by Rebecca Bradshaw is currently running at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End. Set in March in a studio on the Upper West Side of NYC, this dark comedy includes four characters but really centers on two equally unlovable and selfish cousins who manipulate conversations and relationships to get their way. Don Aucoin from The Boston Globe sums it up best, “this is a dark comedy that cuts deep and draws blood.”
The key to this storyline is the amazing dialog and the speed at which it is delivered. The 110 minute play unfolds at the speed of light and leaves you gasping at the verbal spars and emotional vulnerability; manufactured or real it doesn’t seem to matter because the tension on the stage is palpable. This is one of those plays that you want to go grab a drink to discuss after you see it.
While this production must have added angst for those raised in the Jewish faith, one needn’t be Jewish to be touched (and horrified). The play is impossible to turn away from and will suck you in from the first moment to the touching final scene between Jonah and Daphna.
Bad Jews runs until Saturday, Nov. 29th – Get Your Tickets Here
1990s Infomercial: Wunder Boner
I’m not really sure if the Wunder Boner commercials from the early and mid 1990s ever played up in New England because I have no memory of them, but this product certainly caught my attention. The fish de-boning product is really kind of gross to watch in the infomercial below but the lines are classic. My favorite part is when one of the actors says, “The Wunder Boner… My wife would like that.” No comment.
Boston’s longest serving mayor, Tom Menino, has died
Mayor Menino’s battle with cancer ended today according to the Boston Globe. Mayor Tom Menino was Boston’s longest serving Mayor, first taking office back in 1993 and leaving office last year due to his illness. Over that time he helped transform Boston into a more progressive and open city that welcomed everyone; including the LGBT community. He is missed.

WOW airlines comes to Boston
WOW air, an Icelandic discount carrier announced its first flights to the US earlier this week. WOW air’s decision to fly to Boston starting March 27th means that Iceland Air which has owned this route for years now has competition.
WOW air will start with five weekly trips in the spring, and I’m itching to go. Iceland Air introduced Bostonians to this cool European destination years ago and I’ve never heard a bad word about the this tiny little (gay friendly) country.
Boston – Iceland fares start at less than $250
WOW air also has connections through Iceland to more than a dozen European cities including Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Paris and Warsaw – so look for more competitive fares to these and other cities once they start flying in the spring of 2015. More details about WOW air here.
Apple CEO, Tim Cook, comes out
The gay community has known that Apple CEO, Tim Cook, is gay for a very long time. Despite that fact news of Tim Cook coming out today is a HUGE deal.
“Being gay has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be in the minority and provided a window into the challenges that people in other minority groups deal with every day. It’s made me more empathetic, which has led to a richer life. It’s been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own path, and to rise above adversity and bigotry. It’s also given me the skin of a rhinoceros, which comes in handy when you’re the CEO of Apple.”

Boston Ballet’s Swan Lake opens Thursday
Tomorrow (October 30th), The Boston Ballet will present the world premiere of Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake, featuring magnificent new costumes and sets.
For fans of classic ballet, Swan Lake is a must see. Get your tickets and plan an evening out with a friend or someone special. If you need tips on where to grab a dinner or drinks after the performance, I’m happy to provide suggestions.
Boston we have a problem
While there doesn’t appear to be any shortage of real estate websites talking about the many residential projects underway in Boston, this chart by Jumpshell makes me wonder if we are developing a city anyone will like in the future. Part of any city’s appeal is its vibrancy and diversity. If every building is “luxury apartments” then perhaps we should just decide to create a “luxury city” and kick out anyone who doesn’t fit the right socio-economic-status.
I don’t mean to infer that I’m opposed to these projects nor do I mean to infer that the city isn’t trying to make Boston a home for everyone. My friend Julian just today Tweeted out an article in The Atlantic Why Middle-Class Americans Can’t Afford to Live in Liberal Cities; clearly Boston isn’t alone with this troubling trend. For more detail about Boston’s skyrocketing rent explore Jumpshell’s infographic to see median rent prices for studios, 1-4 BR apartments as well as the average rent per person by linking here.
Acai Brothers appealing advertising
Last week my friend Brenton who writes the NSFW blog Aussielicious shared this post, Some sexy advertising, about the Acai Brothers who are opening a raw & organic smoothies and juice bar in Australia.
The advertising certainly grabbed my attention. Maybe they will open a second location here in Boston. 🙂
Latest obsession: my French Press
Earlier this month my coffee maker died and I had a bit of a meltdown.
I started to look at replacements and stumbled upon this French Press. Initially I thought, I love coffee from a French Press, but I’m too clueless in the morning to fuss with the contraption. However, once I threw out my coffee maker I realized how much space it took up in my tiny kitchen and so I thought I’d give the French Press a go. If you are a coffee fiend, and looking to get a new coffee maker, I’d say ditch the filtered coffees and try the French Press. It really doesn’t take much time and it is so much better tasting.

Boots No7 Men sent me some cool SWAG
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I love SWAG – so I was pleasantly surprised when a package of free products from Boots No7 Men arrived at my place last week. I’m really feeling the love from Boots No7 Men, because this is the second surprise package sent my way. Earlier this fall I wrote about Boots No7 Men surprise delivery in my post, “gym essentials gift box“.
This package included Boots No7 Men Anti-Friction Shave Gel, Post Shave Recovery Balm, Men Energising Face Wash and Boots 3 Blade Razor. All these products, which I’m currently enjoying, are available for a limited time at Walgreens and Walgreens.com starting today. Although I’m not much of one for using product, I have to admit I enjoy Boots No7 Men. Thanks Boots No7 Men.
Goya Order and Disorder at MFA Boston
Goya Order and Disorder
on view through January 19, 2015
The Goya exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is a large and impressive collection that includes: portraiture, sport and allegory themed paintings, sketchings, print and tapestries. The exhibit starts very light and almost joyful showcasing some of Goya’s most prominent portraits of Spanish nobility. The portrait above of Antonia Zarate y Aguirre dates back to approximately 1805 and was one of my favorites in the exhibit.
However, as you walk through the eight room exhibit the family portraits give way to some darker subject matter. I’ve highlighted some of my favorites; the violence of sport (Bulls of Bordeaux), madness (Yard with Madmen), war (Attack on a Military Camp) and finally death (Garroted Man). The exhibit officially concludes with The Giant (also known as The Colossus) a smaller piece depicting a pensive giant looking over his shoulder.
Never too heavy handed, the exhibit really drew me in and gave me a greater
appreciation for Goya’s talent, the mediums he used and the external
influences that inevitably shaped his subject matter.
With colder weather on its way, this exhibit provides you with the perfect excuse to head to the MFA and check out this 170 piece collection.
