Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle
Are you having trouble building up your ass? Do you only feel your quads get sore and swollen on leg day? You are not alone.
Since we have adapted to sitting for prolonged hours in a day, we have effectively “shut off” our glute from sitting on them, making our quads do all the work. This makes us more likely to have knee pain and injuries, or even worse a bad case of what I like to call “Pancake Ass”. One way to avoid this is to practice “Glute activation” before you start your leg workout.
This is what I have my clients do when they have trouble “feeling” their glutes work.
- Hip flexor and quad static stretch for 1 minute on each side.
- Glute bridges on the ground with toes up, and driving through their heels for 20 reps or literally until they “feel” their glutes working.

Boston area Haunted Houses
Boston Area Haunted Houses
For those of you who love the more ghoulish side of Halloween, visits to one or more haunted houses always seems to be in order. While I’m no expert on this sort of thing, I’ve done some digging and wanted to share with you some haunted houses you and your friends can plan to visit between now and the end of the month. I’ve not attended any of these locations so please share your comments to help others pick and choose where is the best haunted house.
Barrett’s Haunted Mansion is south of Boston in Abbington, MA. Tuesday, Oct 21 they will host their special Darkness Unleashed, which requires advance ticket purchase. Here is a $3 coupon good for visits Sunday thru Thursday. More details can be found on their website, BHMansion.com.
Factory of Terror has three locations in Worcester, West Warwick, RI and Fall River. Print off a $2 coupon good for visits Sunday thru Thursday Worcester, West Warwick, RI and Fall River. More details about individual locations, tickets and hours can be found on their website, factoryofterror.com.
Salem’s 3-D Haunted House adds a twist by making this tour a 3-D extravaganza. You can also purchase combo tickets to get nightly walking tour through parts of Salem. Visit their website to get more info about tickets and the 3-D Haunted house.
Spooky World may be the largest of the haunted houses in the area with their two locations in Litchfield, NH and Cranston, RI. Based on feedback I read online, it seems like you would be best inclined to purchase their VIP tickets, but these come at a hefty price of ~$60 on Friday and Saturday or ~$50 Sunday thru Thursday. More details about Spooky World can be found on their website, Spookyworld.com.
Unexpected marriage equality victory comes from SCOTUS decision not to review cases
Marriage Equality Update from NYT: The Supreme Court on Monday denied review in all five pending same-sex marriage cases, clearing the way for such marriages to proceed in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The move was a major surprise and suggests that the justices are not going to intercede in the wave of decisions in favor of same-sex marriage at least until a federal appeals court upholds a state ban.

Anti-gay Legislation found to drive significantly higher poverty rates for LGBT
Last week Paying an unfair price: The financial penalty for being LGBT in America caught my attention. The report – the first ever I recall on this topic – paints a bleak picture of the added financial burdens LGBT Americans face because of legalized discrimination in the form of anti-LGBT laws at the national, state and local levels.
The report documents how inequitable laws harm the economic well-being of LGBT people in three key ways:
- Enabling legal discrimination in jobs, housing, credit, and other areas
- Failing to recognize LGBT families, both in general and across a range of programs and laws designed to help American families
- Creating barriers to safe and affordable education for LGBT students and the children of LGBT parents
“Paying an Unfair Price” offers broad recommendations to help strengthen economic security for LGBT Americans including:
- Instituting basic nondiscrimination protections at the federal and state level
- Allowing same-sex couples to marry in all states
- Allowing LGBT parents to form legal ties with the children they are raising
- Protecting students from discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity

New England loves their brunch
Pretty much the entire northeast is obsessed with brunch. At least that is what University of Arizona researchers have concluded. First We Feast shares this and some other rather interesting information about food and Twitter on their website, firstwefeast.com.
Scruffy Sunday
Saturday night video: Annie Lenox
Annie Lenox remakes ‘Summertime’ in her forthcoming album, Nostalgia, which will be released later this month on Oct 21.
Late night Food Truck Festival tonight
Saturday, October 4th 11:30 pm – 1:30 am
Come down and check out the Food Truck Festival tonight (Saturday night) on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Participating food trucks include: Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Chicken & Rice Guys, Tenoch, The Dining Car and Cookie Monstah. Look for the food trucks to be joined by a few fashion trucks as well so you can shop while you nosh.
Although the event web page doesn’t indicate it, I believe this will all take place in Dewey Square (near South Station) on the Greenway.

Bonus fur
Republicans are people too (just not these people)
Vinny Minchillo, who worked on ads for Romney’s presidential campaign, recently told The New Republic that the #ImARepublican campaign is intended to help put an end to the partisan vitriol he feels is directed at his party.
Unfortunately for Minchillo this campaign only reaffirms the perceptions it was intended to challenge. In lieu of reaching out to Republicans they used stock photography. So the impression that Republicans care about the concerns of minorities or that one can be a Republican and an environmentalist seem to ring hollow.
We all know that there are people of color who vote Republican. We also all know that there are Republicans who care about the environment. However, this poorly executed campaign is unlikely to change perceptions and will be made the punchline of jokes…. Are you listening Weekend Update / SNL?
